Personally,

I think it would be smart for the Knicks to try and buy him out and get that cap hit off the books. Why would you want him to play that albatross of a contract out in NY?

Buy-out Melo, find someone to take Noah's absurd contract. Strip down, and start putting pieces around the best young big in the game in Porzingis.

I doubt the Knicks see it this way, but that's the direction I'd want to go. You're just stunting your rebuild by keeping him on the books.

FYI, a buyout doesn't get the cap-hit off your books..

If the Knicks buyout Melo for say, $45M, with Melo leaving $10M on the table (Cavs make up the difference with the MLE)... The total of the $55M owed would still be on the books, and simply stretched over the course of his remaining years minus any contract Melo signs for another team.

So Melo's salary is $55M/2Y, and in this scenario he gets a $45M buyout; so Knicks pay him $45M, but their cap hit is still ~$27.5M/yr. That changes based upon how much the Cavs sign Melo for.. You take Melo's salary from the Cavs and reduce the Knicks cap hold by that amount, so if it's for the MLE, then the Knicks would only have a hold of ~$22.3M/yr.

This is why the Knicks would strongly prefer to trade Anthony, because then they COULD actually get him off the books.

In the trade proposal I outlined previously; the Knicks would have only the sum of the contracts of Frye and Richard Jefferson as dead cap, with likely only $5M in paid salaries over that first year. This would save them ~$50M and convey a $10M TPE.

This is where I think all parties will converge, since it makes the most sense for Melo and the Knicks, and potentially even the Cavs.

WTF!
Melo
Kyrie
Love
LBJ
Are you serious ?! Do you think that we can win with this lineup?!
Who will defend?! My mother?!
The only one who plays some defense from these 4 is LBJ!
Yes we maybe are going to score again 115p a game, but GSW will gonna have an offensive fest on us every damn game!
Some of you don't have any idea what was our mean issues vs the GSW!
We played terrible defense
We have no bench
Our offense wasn't really an issue at all so why the hell do we need to bring Melo here? Melo isn't a winner and he is such a cancer and refuse to play hard and he isn't trying in the defense end at all!

Hmmmmm.

I thought a Buy-out paid the player their "agreed upon" amount up front and they then came completely off the books?

Yep, you'd think so.. but the CBA actually doesn't allow for this. The only reduction in cap comes from another team signing that player; the amount of their next contract comes off the dead cap of the original team.

For the Knicks to rid themselves of the cap hit, they'd have to either trade Melo, or use the Stretch Provision and waive him... So from their perspective, what's to be gained other than being rid of Melo?

This is why I've said that the buyout talk is just a means of Melo negotiating/diminishing his perceived value, thereby allowing for the Cavs to trade for him without giving up any assets in return. Paul George is doing the same thing, but has less leverage.

David Griffin's Knicks candidacy is interesting banana boat wrinkle.
So Gilbert you wanted to screw me over huh?

So Lebron you wanted to bitch and complain about needing help all year?

Carmelo controls his fate right?

Knicks won't dare force Melo to stay if he doesn't want to and cause chaos within the team right?

Knicks reportedly would still rather trade Melo, reported after the firing.

They can buy him out, but that isn't a smart option at all.

Melo could be an even bigger dick to Griff than Dan was.
