You can get away with having a bad offensive player at center. You can't at PF. Teams aren't going to cheat off Asik because he'll be within 5 feet of the basket where he'd actually be capable of converting. Teams cheat off TT because he's 20 feet from the basket.

He was the starting center for one of the best offensive teams in this league last year. That alone proves you can manage an offense with him in it.

His value comes from being a rim protector and a guy who is going to rebound the basketball. The fact that he'll only score 10 points at most in a game is inconsequential, especially if you have other offensively-capable players on the floor, but the fact that he will make it difficult for other teams to score in the paint is huge.

Let me clear up the mental block for some...

Tristan is not playing PF right now. He is playing center, has been since Bynum was banished. Anderson and Tyler are both playing PF so Tristan can be most effective, down on the block hitting the glass and supposedly protecting the rim and being physical. The ONLY problem with that is that he is not dynamic enough as a defender to protect the rim, that may come in time, but for now, we would be better served to find a bigger more intimidating presence under the rim.

Tristan looks alot better next to floor spacing bigs than he did next to Bynum, because Bynum was not mobile or agile enough to guard PF's so he was our C every time he was on the court. Andy and Tyler are playing PF right now. It doesnt matter what you put on the paper, or who Ahmad introduces in what position. Let that sink in.

Would you upgrade Tristan with a guy with more size and a reputation for actually protecting the rim? And if so, dont you feel more comfortable finding a compliment for the rim protector than you do finding a faceup Center?

On the flipside, wouldnt you like to be able to bring in a guy who can play 4 or 5 off the bench and is mobile as a cat and can really cover ground and shut down pick n rolls by hedging the shit out of 2nd units and backups or covering for your rim protector in case we get into a series where he gets in foul trouble?

I feel really good going into a series if we have Tristan as a 3rd big ready to hit the glass and be a physical presence in the paint. Against backups, his limitations on offense are not as glaring. Next to Tyler against reserves he is much more of a threat to be fed and allowed to work.

Who are you going with those descriptions? Larry Sanders?

Im just saying... take the "fit next to TT" part out of the equation and get your rim protector and it becomes much clearer for us.

We got worse than nothing- we significantly hurt the value of our 2014 pick. Getting a 4 month rental of a player is something championship teams do to get them over the edge. It isn't something you do to make the playoffs. This is a panic move so Christ Grant could save his job. Wonderful.

Too many assumptions. Too much gloom and doom.

Do you have the inside scoop that this is a 4 month rental? Loyd and Brian W. were all over the radio yesterday talking about this deal and even they don't know if Deng would leave or re-sign. Also with Bird rights the Cavs can offer the most $, and trade him for maybe something better if he is not part of the future and wants to move on.

I just don't get all the negative boo hooing around here. The Cavs are better today than they were before this trade and that's not an opinion, that's a fact.

I'd rather set my sights on winning not losing like so many people around here expect.

In order to have money for a max guy, you were going to renounce Varajao anyway, might as well just trade for Asik and a young big like Montejunas and consider Deng, Asik and Montejunas your 2014 offseason. Get them in the fold, let them grow with Kyrie, Dion, TT, Bennett, Zeller, Karasev and move full steam ahead with what you have. Retaining Deng then becomes your primary focus ALONG with turning your young assets into a bigger star (cough Love) who would look PERFECT next to Asik.

Get a 4th or 5th seed and make some noise this year touting your young core.
how could the cavs afford kyrie-deng-love-asik? i guess deng could be moved, but that could create problems offensively.

i like asik, really do, but it's hard to pay a guy like that what he's gonna get elsewhere ($10M+....$12M+?) because he's so worthless offensively. kyrie and love would both be $15M+ (and a lot higher in subsequent years). would they be able to get enough offense elsewhere without going off the rails with their cap situation?

re: asik/donatas trade, that's interesting, but it puts a lot of pressure on finding that pf, with trade being the only option. with kyrie, deng, and asik in the fold that eats up cap space real quick. though, they wouldn't necessarily just need love. guys like ryan anderson would fit really well too. but i am not sure they are willing to abandon the lebron sweepstakes just yet...

That's what I was trying to show above. So . . . everyone complains about how our SF should be in the D league we gut a Playoff team by taking theirs (yes, even without Rose). . . . And we gave up . . .? JJ Hickson when we got Tristan, um Bynum who well I saw one game where he looked solid in the post (don't think he's adding wins). Oh and essentially Allan Crabbee? (the second rounders in two years).

But what we should've drafted Otto Porter? Then we could be happy to say he needs to get healthy, beef up and we'll get a good pick. Has anyone been on teams that just flat out lose year in and out? When you were KI's age or Waiters? If no one cares if you win, you kinda don't you look to get yours. I remember playing on a team and scoring (awhile ago) I think 52 pts one game because we were winless and played a team that had 70 at the half so just stopped playing d, so I just stopped passing it. Sure they are professionals, but they're normal people like us. Use your job office. How big of a difference does the environment make?

You've gotta stop looking at who you could get when you're bad. We buy tickets to watch good basketball. Make fun of MB, etc. I'd guess a lot of us are more educated (not 1 year in college), and I am guessing (assuming we somehow were in adequate shape), we'd still be learning a new system after having just some dude we call coach the year before.

The fact that they've played 8? one possession games says a lot. The fact that they out-played the Pacers Defensively to close out a game says a lot. I'm done writing tank. I dont think they are done. They either have to have a good idea if Lebron would come back or not. Grant plays Chess not checkers. Hickson/Bynum/Crabee - one I only enjoyed watching his slow hands let Lebron's passes bounce off of his face, another I watched once this year play a solid post/defensive game, the other I am not bored enough to look up on youtube, we turned the assets from those chumps into Cleveland being in the news again.

If you've played the game, you should realize how huge it is to go from whoever is playing 3 to a bona fide player.

We have what:
KI- IMO COULD (huge could) be an MVP if he watches games like INDY and thinks, we could make some damage, etc.
Waiters- I think he'll be an all-star - he is improving on a weekly basis
Tristan- I actually think same as above. The guy just started shooting with a hand he never did?

And now Deng. No not Gee, not Casspi, not whoever might fit there.

Why Can't we win if we play D? They are starting to (play). I don't think they are done. I do think this team is going to surprise. Dion seemed to me to have a light turn on against INDY like "fuck we are losing . . . again". I am looking forward to the next games. I hope it's Dion that gets mad. I see him as more of the heart going forward and Kyrie as the superstar.

But F losing. I don't care if we win now 35 wins and get to the playoffs. We got to the playoffs. Then we get better.

Just sick of seeing these Tank, cuz Wiggins will be so good, blah blah blah. Then you have another Rookie. How many do we give max contracts to?

That Tank thread is just annoying what can I say. I am sick of seeing a lot of guys who flash Talent and Defensive awareness lose by a basket against an elite team then hear how they suck (not that someone is a fool for standing out of bounds (or chucking a three when his teammate was absolutely invisible).

Dion just has to get his head right... he seemed off last night... really his bulldog attitude helps the team but he has to learn to control it... he still needs to work on his J and his finishing at the rim... he can get to the hoop at will but he has to start finishing more...or dish it off for easy buckets to his bigs... he just needs to control his emotions and mouth .. the whole Kyrie and TT buddy ball was BS.. personally I think it was more aimed at Kyrie but to throw someone like TT that works his ass off into his whining about touches kind of rubbed me the wrong way with him... this board gives him way more love than I think he deserves .. I'd trade him in a heartbeat if we could get a legit superstar for him but nobody else around the league views him nearly as high as most on this forum......I just hope he can continue to mature and improve and find away for him and Kyrie to truly mesh .. I am also going to be interested in seeing how he meshes with Deng and the fact he may now be the 3rd option

I agree. I am a huge Dion supporter and think he can become a really nice player, but I am not sure if his overall attitude will allow him to. I didn't like the way he acted at all yesterday. If the team is the most important, shouldn't he have been excited we were destroying the 76ers instead of sulking and ball hogging during scrub minutes. I hated the way he basically did not want to slap the hand of Dellie or any other teammate when they tried to offer encouragement. I once was on the side of him being untradeable and now am slowly moving towards thinking we need to trade him for team purposes. He will be a very good player, but I do not think the benefits will out weigh the costs in this situation.

Not sure why we're talking about Dion in this thread now, but I thought he played great yesterday.

Maybe he just doesn't take a ton of happiness from embarrassing his hometown team? Or maybe he was just in a shitty mood or didn't feel well? Everyone has bad days, and Dion didn't let it affect his game. He had 8 assists. He was clearly playing team ball.

And the only reason he was even in during garbage time was to make sure the Sixers weren't able to come back. We saw how quickly they cut our lead by ten after Mike Brown finally pulled him. Of course, by that point it was too late to matter.

Since Mike "Cowabunga" Brown finally played CJ at 3 to much success against a crap team, does that mean he's the official Deng back up in the rotation and the Clark Experiment and Gee get the BOOT?

as risky as it is, the upside of a Deng rental is not having to worry about seeing either of them in the rotation outside of garbage time.

Sorry if this has been discussed but any idea what number Deng will wear since Delli wears 9?

Dion was on last night he just got shorted on minutes because CJ was ON FIRE. That situation is very delicate. CJ keeps the offense moving right now and Dion is trying to do everything he can to crack a spot in that starting lineup. Dion clearly has some personality issues fitting into the team but I truly don't question his desire to be a great player. He works his ass off and we should be sympathetic to that. Hopefully Dion can work on his interpersonal skills, but he kind of has a Kobe mentality and that's no easy thing to change
