Brendan Haywood's Trade Exception

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
When it was originally reported it was one TPE for Haywood, and MM, I liked it a lot better. The caliber of players we could get were much different.

Miller's will be best used to trade for either a malcontent on a rookie scale deal, or a couple of guys on vet min deals. Best case scenario is someone gets bought out, and we can offer them the MM exception (I believe this is legal).

As for Haywood, Lance Stephenson is not happening, but that is about the caliber of talent we can expect, or the Haywood contract can be used to help facillitate a bigger move. Something like Andy/Shump for one player, and Haywood for another to save the team taxes.

Don't Lebron and Stephenson hate each other? Either way, he doesn't seem like a good fit. Not a good shooter. Game is too similar to Shump.
Matt Barnes, and Ron Artest played with Kobe after years of tension. I don't think it would be an issue.

In the right situation he has proven to be a contributor on a winning team, so I could see us willing to take a chance on him especially if it's at a cheap price.

JR better sign- I wouldn't want to take the chance on Stephenson's hero me-me antics. He went Dion-like "And1" ball in the playoffs 2 years ago and was highly praised for that, even tho his teammates (Hibbert, I forget who else) and their gameplan turned into a pile of goo. So the Borbnets essentially sacrificed their team concept to bring him in as a star, and he promptly shat the bed.

Has he learned a lesson in team-ball? Maybe- but is it worth the risk? We just lost our rah-rah locker room stabilizer in Miller (not that he's the be-all end-all in that regard). He might be awesome in that role, but I'd rather have JR. Hurry up and sign, man.

LOL, I don't know if this is even possible, but if it is, I am here for it (it being "the comedy"). I thought he was better than Dion back then and still do now.

Don't think he would be a good fit though. JR Smith is.

I wasn't suggesting that we bring him in as a replacement to JR but in addition to him. Like I said, I have no idea if we are interested but he is a guy that could potentially had on the cheap at the trade deadline and wouldn't carry much risk as we could always waive him or not pick up his option next year. If he does fit in though, we could lock him in for another year at pretty reasonable $9.4M.

Also, I don't put his Charlotte year on him because that coach has no clue what to do on offense. That head coach was the one that wanted him, and then had no idea how to use him and just benched him.

Assuming we re-sign JR, I would not expect us to use anything more than a minor portion of the TPE's before the '16-'17 league year. Obviously that could change if we suffer an injury or something falls directly into our lap. The nice part about doing the deal now is that we can wait until after this season, ease some of our luxury tax burden and still have this nice chip in play before next year's draft and free agency periods to try to improve the team beyond this upcoming year.

I see this as a way to keep our options open, but realistically we're rolling the Haywood and Miller contracts forward a year when we will be significantly less hamstrung by the CBA under a much higher cap.

I just got back from vacation.

Does anyone know what the exact deal(s) was? Sounds like we gave up 2 2nds in 2 separate deals.

We gave up Miller, Haywood, the better of the Laker's and Minny's seconds in 2019, and our 2020 second for Cash considerations and the TPEs (which apparently couldn't be combined unless we purposely did it as two trades?).

There’d be no tangible benefit to purposely doing it as two trades, as any amount of the TPE that’s unused still carries over until the expiry date.

The idea that you could get one $13.2 M exception rather than a $2.7M and $10.5M is actually quite relevant since you can't go over the TPE and they can't be combined. Apparently two players can't create one together either.

I'm wondering if the Cavs will use the larger TPE in July next year to get a big man, either to replace Mozgov or Tristan. Personally I think it would be easier to replace Tristan because there's probably more energy PFs out there for cheaper prices than there would be rim protecting 7 footers. I'm not saying it's impossible to re-sign both, but it seems like we would need some insurance and leverage in that situation and without the TPE we would have what, only minimum contracts and some sort of MLE again?

If the Cavs burn the TPE during this midseason for say a wing player, I just wonder if we would have the ability to replace Mozgov or Tristan after the season is over if we're forced to lose one of them (or god forbid somehow we lose both)

I'm sure I'm missing some angles on this, just spitballing here. Any thoughts?

I said the same thing earlier today in one of these threads. Just based on the salaries of Bron, Irving, Love, Shumpert, and the Anderson Varejao Lifetime Achievement Contract, the Cavs will be over the cap even with the big projected jump. That limits what they can do next offseason. If Mozgov gets a huge offer and leaves, the Cavs would be stuck on ways to replace him without the $10m TPE.

I really don't expect the Cavs to use the larger TPE this season. They don't want to effectively pay $4-5 per salary dollar unless it's really necessary. But it's a nice insurance policy for next July.

Are people actually discussing Lance Stephenson in here?

Stop please.
