Brendan Haywood's Trade Exception

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm wondering if the Cavs will use the larger TPE in July next year to get a big man, either to replace Mozgov or Tristan. Personally I think it would be easier to replace Tristan because there's probably more energy PFs out there for cheaper prices than there would be rim protecting 7 footers. I'm not saying it's impossible to re-sign both, but it seems like we would need some insurance and leverage in that situation and without the TPE we would have what, only minimum contracts and some sort of MLE again?

If the Cavs burn the TPE during this midseason for say a wing player, I just wonder if we would have the ability to replace Mozgov or Tristan after the season is over if we're forced to lose one of them (or god forbid somehow we lose both)

I'm sure I'm missing some angles on this, just spitballing here. Any thoughts?

Well we didn't find anything out there this year for cap relief and next year should be worse. Better pay Tristan and Moz both because what you can get for the tpe is worse than both of them and likely much worse.

I think it will be used for smaller deals because it could only realistically be used on a bad contract. Why pick up a bad contract instead of signing guys that are valuable to you to their own bad contracts?

If there's an impasse for either of them, sure. Griffin's keeping his options open there, too.

With the cap jump, if we still have the TPE next off season, cutting a 10 million player from your cap is never a bad thing. For example, it allowed the Spurs to sign LMA this offseason. Just an example, but maybe someone would want to take a run at both KD, and Derozan, and in that situation, 10.5 million in cap space is a big deal

Yes but what team has enough pieces for us as well as enough cap room for Durant/Derozan (eg. washington, what the hell do we want from them?)

A lot of teams should due to the jump.

That said Washington has Porter that we might be interested in as a back up for LeBron, add in Humphries, and it fits into the Haywood exception perfectly. I believe that would give them about 40 million in cap space. Should be pretty damn close to two max contracts, and the ability to retain Beal, so long as he doesn't sign an offer sheet.

Wall/Derozan/Durant with Beal off the bench would be dangerous. Just one example of a team with a young wing, that we might be interested in.

The other teams, with the exception of Houston, that I looked at have a lot of cap space. So we had better hope it's either Houston, or Washington that have arrangements with big fish lol.

Even Washington could just sign one max guy outright, so taking a look at it, we better use this damn thing during the season.

Why would the Cavs want to take on backups Otto Porter and Kris Humphries to help Washington (a conference foe) get Kevin Durant?

And Bradley Beal isn't coming off the bench for anyone.

Washington could get Durant with or without us... There's going to be some major money thrown around next year.

Almost every team I looked at has over 20 million, and a few had over 40. A lot of players are going to get a lot of money. Haywood's exception is really only valuable to a team that wants 2 max guys, or in the case of say the Lakers, 3.

Remind me again please why the trade exception is not as good as the original Hayeood contract. Both can be used to dump 10.5 mil in salary. Aren't they?

Haywood could have been used to take on ~$13 million, and could have been combined with another player to take on anyone. The TPE can take on $10.5 or less and can't be combined.

Maybe we can title change this to "The Cavs Big Ass Trade Exception(and secondary little TPE)

Or "The Remains of the Hay"

I suggest a compromise Drop Brendan and just make it Haywood's traded player exception

On top of my wishing list of players seeming spendable, for the biggest TPE (just don't think Jefferson is sufficient insurance at bench
wing):

G.Henderson $6M Blazers
A.Anderson. $4M Wizards
J.Dudley. $4.3M. Wizards

Of them I think Henderson should be our main target, for whom I would rather use the 2018 1st round pick.
