Building the right way?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm thinking at least we don't suck as much as the Cavaliers?

Don't be too quick to gloat: the Bucks have had the #1 over all pick, they've had the 8th pick (twice), the 6th pick, and a couple of 10th picks ... and a near .500 record is their reward.

We've got a long way to go ...

The tank model only works if your scouts don't suck and your picks stay healthy.

Was Jim Paxson hired as a secret draft consultant for Milwaukee?

I had taken a look at their picks relative to what was taken after, and they really didn't do *that* crappy.

Joe Alexander was one of their big flops, but when you already have Bogut and think you've got something in Ramon Sessions ... do you draft Augstin, Lopez, or Bayless?

Yi was another disaster, but they're no better off with Corey Brewer or Brandan Wright. Noah or Hawes would have been nice, but of course they had Bogut ... and they've done real well with their 2nd round picks, that include: Ilaysova, Sessions, Mbah a Moute, and Leuer. Jennings was a darn nice pick at #10.

Anyway, it's too early to declare that the Cavs have things all figured out when it comes to the draft. Irving was a no-brainer, and Tristan is going to need time to prove he deserved to be elevated. We've already churned through a number of our picks during the Ferry/Grant era with little to show for it (Shannon, JJ, Danny Green and Christian).

The #1 thing we have going for us is Dan Gilbert's commitment and $$$. I doubt Chris Grant is under any pressure to make the Cavs more watchable for the sake of drawing fans to the Q. I'm not sure we can say the same for the Bucks ...

Without DG's money, we wouldn't have had the chance to draft Kyrie. We'd be building around Thompson.

Like I said, nice second round picks, might be allowing a blind man to draft for them in the first round. Jim Fucking Paxson is behind this, I'm sure of it.

Eh if I was betting, the Cavs would of taken Brandon Knight

Good point, but not necessarily more encouraging.

Both Knight and Thompson have a long way to go, but Thompson is top-5 in the league in offensive rebounds per 36; whereas I'm not sure Knight is top-10 in anything.

Re: Did the cavs start giving up last week?

Horrible, horrible thread..

Re: Did the cavs start giving up last week?

Bad teams are going to lose. Bad teams without 4 rotation guys are going to become terrible.

I refuse to click that link and give BR a page view, but I am assuming that the author is reading into something that doesn't exist. They did not give up or quit, they are just playing like the bad/terrible team that they are/became.

Re: Did the cavs start giving up last week?

no, it didnt seem like that dumbfuck. the cavs are trying hard just coming up a little short. Dont be so fucking critical. Terrible thread.

My reaction is this:

Dear NBA decision makers,

I understand that small market teams tanking at the end of the season is an embarrassment. Nobody at ESPN wants to admit that the next month of NBA action only matters to half of the league. Nobody wants to admit that certain players are being rested so that they can heal up for next year.

Nobody wants to admit that the only way for certain teams to contend is to hope they someday draft superstars... and that they have a small window of opportunity to put together a winning culture with those superstars.

Here's why I don't feel bad with tanking as a fan of the Cavaliers living in driving distance of both the Warriors and Kings, a trifecta of tank: YOU HAD ALL SUMMER TO MAKE THIS LEAGUE FAIR. We are in a new labor contract. All suggestions made by small markets to even the playing field were rejected. Dan Gilbert was a pariah in ESPN reports on labor negotiations, so he eventually had to sneak back into the shadows of the process.

If you create a league where big markets and premium destinations have an automatic advantage, you recognize the problem, then do absolutely NOTHING to fix the problem... you give franchises like the Cavs, Kings, and Warriors NO CHOICE but to follow the Oklahoma Kansas City model and take two steps back... hoping to take five steps forward in the coming year or two.

Its all you've left us... but this summer was your chance to fix it.

My initial reaction is: I wish there was a way to "hide" the tank thread from A) the team B) national reporters C) other tanking teams' message boards and D) the general public.

Of course there isn't any way to do that without locking or relocating it, so...whatever. The system is what it is, and we just have to deal with it for a few more weeks. The reward far outweighs the embarassment.

Tanking has become the coin phrase for people in denial of how bad their team is playing.

Now queue in lester Hudson, Manny Harris, Don Sloan, You really can not expect those guys to come in and play NBA defense right away.

On the other hand. Tristan has made the starting lineup and despite some inconsistencies is improving.

Lester Hudson is showing him to be a type of scorer the cavs will need off the bench going forward.

Donald sloan is a good value at the point guard position. he is a great distributor. certainly a viable option going forward as a low coast back up option to irving.

Luke Harangody. went to the d league to work on his rebounding. He has been sensational averaging a double double with the d league team. he certainly has increased his stock wwithout playing a single minute in the nba since the all star break.

Alonzo Gee - although he has made th e starting lineup. Whether he ramins is a question mark going into next yea. regardless of his role in the future he can be a solid contributor on both sides of the court.

Samardo Samuels - Continues to improve. He is the closest thing to an "enforcer" that the cavs have. He is playing controlled and letting the game come to him. His effort and consistency remain question marks.

Luke walton - filler for Harangody.

Manny Harris- has been okay. still not sure wht the fuss has been about. Lester hudsons emergence as a shooter has put him in jeopardy.

Omri Casspi - one step forward. two steps back . Casspi is in dire need of a strong offseason to resurrect his career. regardless of what team he plays for. he has the skills. justt cant seem to put it together.

Semih Erden - limited by matchups. more of a situational player.

most of these guys are on the bubble and in order to make the right calls on who stays and goes the cavs need to be competitive to really appropriately value them.

The Cavs have pressing needs in the off season. they need to find a starting scorer to match up with Irving whether its a 2 guard or a 3. outside of a top 3 lottery pick its not really a big deal where the cavs end up and that top 3 pick could be won or loss by too many losses just as much as too many wins. there's 3 big mean projected in the top 5 cavs would really only have interest in two of them and without a top 3 pick or a trade up they are unlikely to get either without winning a lottery pick. Sg on the other hand you have Austin rivers. Beal, and lamb as well as three mkg and barnes. heck even outside the top ten 6-4 kendall marshall would be a good grab for the cavs.

The cavs thnen have rfa and free agency to round out the roster. Thompson and Irving, Gee, possibly Hudson and whoever survives the offseason will have a full training camp to prepare for the season . this is where continuity becomes a factor. the vlue of having guys on the court familiar with the system and knowing what scotts wants as well as familiarty with each other on the court will go along way in developing another rookie or two as well as getting any other new acquisition adjusted to the system
