Cavs coaching search

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This time, Gilbert really DOES need to break the bank for Izzo. Or Calipari.

Unless Izzo has to pull a Pete Carroll and "resign" to get out in front of the Nassar scandal, which looks like it has exonerated MSU at this point, that bridge has sailed.

I think a lot of people are overestimating how many people are willing to sign up for the Dan Gilbert experience.

I highly doubt the Cavaliers will have their pick of coaches when they decide to make an official hire.

There are only 30 head coaching jobs in the NBA. 29 of them are taken. It's a major promotion, all these coaches like Hammon and Messina will line up for the interviews.

I don’t agree. If you’re that good of a candidate you can always wait it out and get a better job.

NBA coaches get fired all the time and there’s always openings. You don’t have to take a take a bad job just because you want to be a head coach.

The thing you have to consider is that this Cavs roster is going to be really bad for *at least* two or three more years. How many coaches that have other options are going to willingly sign up for a tanking/rebuilding situation when there will likely be playoff teams looking to replace their coach at the same time.

If I’m the Cavaliers, the absolute main thing I’m looking for is someone with player development experience. Someone who can work with young guys and expand their skill sets and their understanding of the game. And if that person ends up not being a very good in-game tactician overall, you just replace them when the talent gets better and you’re ready to start winning.

Not sure what interview you heard, but here's a Stackhouse quote from an interview on Zach Lowe's podcast.

“People say I may not like pace,” Stackhouse told Lowe. “I want to get out and run every opportunity we can. But if we don’t have something initially, let’s bring it back out, get into my Carolina secondary offense...I like the three. I like to have weakside action, making sure that guys aren’t stagnant and just standing, making sure that we’re keeping guys occupied...We want guys driving the ball to finish, but if the helps comes, I want that corner filled, and I want that slot filled, so I can sit there blind,” and here Stackhouse closed his eyes; he wants his players to know the right play so intuitively they don’t need to see it to recognize it. If you watched Stackhouse the player, you may see his coaching philosophy as somewhat surprising. He sees it, too.

“I probably wouldn’t like my game as a coach. Midrange twos...I tell guys, ‘All right, If it’s the shot clock and a guy runs you off and you gotta take a one-dribble pull-up, OK, do it. But otherwise, let’s try to get into the paint, pull another trigger, or find something else on the weakside, or just sidestep him and take the three...Guys who have efficient midrange games are always outliers.’”

^ sounds pretty anti midrange to me.

Good call. I must be misremembering something. Maybe it was about his defensive scheme.

I know none of you want to admit this, but the reality is that we are going to have a difficult time attracting a quality head coach. Even Drew reportedly wants a raise and guarantee beyond this season just to take the interim job.

You have a team devoid of talent and assets, on the downside of a significant rebuild. The veterans are overpaid malcontents. You would be stuck with assistants you didn’t hire. You aren’t going to build a quality staff in November. You have a meddling owner with a short fuse, a giant ego and unrealistic expectations.

If you are an ascending coach with any other options, why in the world would you take this job? I hate to rain on this parade, but this might be the least desirable job in the league right now. There may be more long term upside remaining an assistant on a contender.

If Drew refuses to take the interim job, this could get ugly. I don’t think Dan wants to wait until the summer to bring in the next guy.

Not saying Lue deserved to stay, but this could end up being a circus.

So wtf does this mean? He’ll coach like a month or 2 then just stop if he doesn’t have an extension? Lmao

I think it's mostly that he wants to be paid like a head coach if that's what he will be doing for the rest of the season. I would see if we can get someone long term in before negotiating anything. Better to pay a guy like Jerry Stackhouse on a multi-year deal than Larry Drew.

Sounds like Drew is trying to play hard ball with Gilbert because if he says no, Gilbert has to go outside of the organization to find a head coach mid season and that can only end badly.

The problem is that no assistant coach is going to leave their team two weeks into a season.

The Cavs are gonna have to ride out the next 6 months with someone already on the staff or someone who isn't in coaching right now.

I would immediately fire this bozo after his ridiculous statements, lol at him making threats acting like we actually need him for anything but being a placeholder until we get an actual NBA caliber coach for once.

He doesn’t wanna do it? who gives a damn, anybody else on the coaching roster will do the exact same job as him, Larry Drew can go screw himself because there’s no way he’ll be the next long term head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
