June 23 --- ALL DRAFT DAY UPDATES
The original post has been copied and pasted into post 2, below!

Givony/Draft Express makes another big change for the last mock draft.

After saying (12 hours ago) that perceptions of Jonas V. had changed, Givony has shuffled the deck again for his last mock draft update. The final version with more details will be up on Yahoo by morning, but it's on Draft Express already:

1. Irving to Cavs
2. Williams to Wolves
3. Kanter to Jazz
4. Jonas V. to Cavs

Givony had this extra piece to say:

If buyout officially gets done, yes. RT @LithuaniaBasket: Confident w/Cavs going Valanciunas at 4 that you put him back there in your mock?

Givony's Mock Draft on Jonas from Yahoo:

With his buyout issues yet to be fully resolved (nothing has officially been signed), Valanciunas flew into Cleveland for a secret meeting on Tuesday. He conducted a thorough medical examination, interviewed with the team’s front office and went through light drills, showing off his skill level, which looked better than advertised. With Kanter off the board, and Cleveland seemingly more comfortable with picking Valanciunas (despite having to wait a year for his services), the chances of him taking a significant drop on draft night appear to be much smaller.

Numerous NBA teams, such as San Antonio for example, are waiting to pounce if he slips past Washington at No. 6, knowing they’d have a rare opportunity to secure a franchise-caliber center.

If Valanciunas’ buyout is not resolved in time and Kanter is off the board, the Cavs could throw a curve ball at the draft by selecting Tristan Thompson here.

Chad Ford - latest mock 7.0, says he may create a 7.1

Cle-Kyrie
Min-DWill

Cle-Jonas V

Analysis: We had Valanciunas in this position last week. But on Monday we reported that Valanciunas' buyout with his team in Lithuania would prohibit him from coming to the NBA next season.

The Cavs love Valanciunas, but do they love him enough to draft him even if he won't be coming to the NBA right away? There are growing signals that they do. Valanciunas was in Cleveland on Tuesday meeting with Cavs brass. They conducted a physical and a workout as well which has seemingly calmed their fears.

But another serious dark horse here is Tristan Thompson. As I reported on Wednesday, Thompson met with owner Dan Gilbert in Cleveland on Monday, and the Cavs are intrigued. As I gather more info, this is one spot where the mock could change in Version 7.1.

Joe Kotoch

Sources tell @Probballdraft that the @Cavs are prepared to select Jonas Valanciunas either at 4 or lower if they trade down. Buyout or not.

Wojo

Texas standout Tristan Thompson made a strong impact on Cleveland executives in a workout this week, and he’s a real possibility to be selected at the fourth spot. His agent happens to be Rich Paul, one of LeBron James’(notes) childhood friends and part of the Maverick Carter LRMR marketing company.

Chad Ford

The Cavs have some serious stat guys on their staff. That may explain why they are so high on Tristan Thompson, who John Hollinger has rated third in his Draft Rater.

If the Cavs take Thompson at No. 4, I'm hearing Jonas Valanciunas, who I currently have in the 4 spot in Mock Draft 7.0, probably goes No. 8 to the Pistons.

Draft Express

Sounds like @Utah_Jazz will select Enes Kanter at 3. Changes whole complexion of lottery.

Ric Bucher
League sources now believe Jonas Valanciunas goes to Cavs at #4 even if Enes Kanter is still on the board. The consensus is that Valanciunas will not be able to escape his existing contract with Lietuvos Rytas until January at the earliest, but that does not scare off the Cavaliers, who sources say compare Valanciunas favorably to the Lakers' Pau Gasol.

Being told Kings not picking at 7 but also hearing that Brandon Knight is going to still be on board at 7 - makes 7 very interesting

Cavs going to draft Kyrie Irving with 1st pick. They're scheming to figure out how to get D. Williams but Irving is top of their board.
Most execs see this draft same way: 2 impact players then a bunch of role players + gambles. Everyone now just looking for best bet.
2 players you can talk to Cavs about now: Ramon Sessions & JJ Hickson. Andy Varejao not available for just a draft pick.

Sam The Bullshit Whisperer

From this post
Cavs source says team has not floated JJ Hickson's name for draft pick. "That comes from people who aren't dialed in to team," source says.
Mike Brown and Lakers, on other hand, would love to somehow get Varejao. And will try.
And before you ask, T-Wolves have expressed zero interest in Hickson or Varejao. They want All-Star if they give up No. 2.

Chad Ford

These aren't tweets, but from his livechats. Again, from this post.
With the draft not being as deep as past drafts. How much do you think the 1 and 4 pick will actually help the Cavs? Playoffs?

Chad Ford (1:03 PM)

It depends on what they do with their picks and what they do via trades and free agency. If they draft a couple of NBA ready players at 1 and 4, should help a lot. But playoffs may be a bit of a stretch right now. A lot rides on what happens at both 1 & 4. Sounds like there's still debate between Irving, Derrick Williams and yes ... Enes Kanter at No. 1. Kanter is returning for a second workout on the 2nd and his camp feels he's in the mix for the 1st pick.

Do you see any draft night trades happening??

Chad Ford (1:16 PM)

I think there will be a bunch. Teams are telling me that trade talk really started picking up on Tuesday. Cavs are looking at potential deals using the No. 4 pick and either Baron Davis or Ramon Sessions. Jazz looking for deals. Would be open to discussing Paul Milsap or Devin Harris. Wizards looking to add talent around John Wall. Pistons are being active. Rockets have been very aggressive (as they often are). Bucks have made draft day trades past 2 years and are being aggressive again.

And some pretty useless tweets from Chad Ford, from this post.
Kyrie Irving is here on the ESPN campus. We just chatted and I have some major breaking news to report ...
He will be wearing a blue & black Armani suit on draft night. "I'm going for classy." Glad we put that to rest. ... Very nice kid.
Kyrie told me he did just the Cavs workout. Didn't sound confident, however, he was going to Cavs. "You never know how draft will work out."
Kyrie already knew Enes Kanter was coming in for second workout. Didn't seem fazed by it. I still think Cavs have to take Irving # 1.

This was posted many times, but here is the latest mock draft from Chad (Don't know who to attribute this to)
The first pick said:
1. Cleveland- Kyrie Irving
There have been a lot of interesting theories floating around the past week about why Cleveland won't be taking Irving No. 1. I still don't buy it. The Cavs have been shopping Baron Davis and Ramon Sessions hard in the past week.

Williams is still in the picture here at No. 1 in part because the Cavs feel they could get a very good point guard (either Brandon Knight or Kemba Walker) at No. 4 ... but sources continue to stress that it's Irving's to lose.

The Fourth Pick said:
4. Cleveland- Jonas Valanciunas
I've had Kanter in this position since Mock Draft 1.0, but it's time to make the biggest change I've made to our board. From what I gather, the Cavs appear to be cooling a bit on Kanter and warming to Valanciunas.

Vesely and Leonard are in the picture too and would both be good fits. But this may be the Cavs' only chance to draft a legit 7-foot center. Valanciunas is raw, but he has big upside.

While Cleveland has been linked to Kanter more openly this is there pick, presuming Valanciunas’ agent secures a buyout that will get the Lithuanian to Cleveland within a season or two. Behind closed doors the Cavs absolutely love Valanciunas, who was among the best rebounders in Europe this past season. Valanciunas has loads of upside and would excite fans with his impressive style of play on defense.

Q: Is there really any doubt at #1 with Kyrie Irving or is this all a smokescreen when it comes to the Cavs talking about doing something with that pick like Enes Kanter potentially being the #1 guy?

A: I think you have to take your hat off to Chris Grant and Cleveland. They have every single player in this draft thinking that they are going to get picked by Cleveland at #1. They are doing an unbelievable job at putting smoke out there and telling media, players, agents, other teams exactly what they want them to think they are going to do but really the only people that know is Cleveland. At the end of the day though, I would be shocked if they passed on Irving, but they are doing their due diligence. They are trying to get every prospect in for a workout including Brandon Knight and Kanter and Derrick Williams. And if that takes telling these guys they are considering them at #1, then they will do that.

From this post. Thanks noonan!
My own personal opinion is that the Cavs and most other teams already know what they're doing in draft. Current activity is posturing...

Enes Kanter returning to Cleveland for second workout screams smokescreen. Cavs looking ultra interested builds value and suspicion w pick 4

For those who've inquired, keep dreaming. Andy Varejao & Ramon Sessions won't get you the 2nd pick in any circumstance.

The Cavs do have an interest in Derrick Williams but aren't consumed by the need to get him. JJ Hickson isn't just a throwaway either.

doubtful Cavs get second pick. Not worth the package of assets it would require. More likely Cavs trade down than trade up.

This isn't the time for Cavs to sell out for one particular player. This draft is deeper than it is top-heavy - stockpile multiple assets.

I understand excitement that comes w/ talk of Cavs efforts to get Irving & Williams. Just not likely, plus cost would be counterproductive.

Last thing a rebuilding team should do is sell their assets at $.50 on the dollar (JJ) while overpaying for a comparable replacement (DWill)

Andy would be a nice piece for a contender but also fits Byron's system well. Cavs would want a lot more than one 1st for him.

Sessions alone could potentially land mid to late first. Big drop off in PGs after top 3. Ramon > late 1st for PG needy contenders.

btw JJ & Byron get along fine now. For the record Cavs brass not totally convinced D Williams is head & shoulders better than JJ.

Cavs brass been talking bout Klay Thompson as lotto talent since December while rest of world had him in 2nd rd. Kudos 2 them.

if Cavs land late lotto pick, Thompson fits the bill as likely target. High ceiling wing player who provides instant offense.

Pro Basketball Draft

Again, thanks to Noonan for this post!
Talk of Kanter a possibility for the CLE at 1 is inaccurate. He's a possibility at 4. With Valanciunas w/o buyout still Cavs covering bases.

Agents push their clients agenda. Sounds better to say Kanter is in mix for 1 rather than 4. Trust me.

This is an NBA draft that is devoid of big men, so Lithuania's 7-foot, 245-pound 19-year-old, Jonas Valanciunas, has a lot of interest from teams in the lottery. At his age, there is no doubting his intriguing potential, but expecting him to help a team right away is unrealistic.

More critically for teams in position to select him is projecting where Valanciunas' game will be five years from now. It is not inconceivable to some NBA personnel that he could be the best player in this draft by then -- of course the risk is that the NBA executive that drafts him could be fired by then.

Playing background

Valanciunas has played in virtually every major European junior tournament since he was 16 and he has been one of the continent's most prolific talents. In fact, he has been Europe's under-16 MVP and its under-18 MVP in different summers. He plans to play for Lithuania's European champions in July's Under-19 World Championships in Latvia. It will be his fifth straight summer representing his country.

This past season, at 18 and in his first full season in the Euroleague, Valanciunas averaged almost eight points and six rebounds in 15 minutes on 71 percent shooting from the field. That doesn't sound like much, but only a handful of the top-25 high school seniors in the United States could realistically accomplish that.

Future Position

Valanciunas may be the best or, more precisely, the only pure low post center at the top of this draft. While his longtime European rival, Enes Kanter, measured out at 6-foot-11 and 260 pounds, Kanter has the skill level play both inside and out and will likely be utilized that way. The young Lithuanian is going to spend most of his eventual NBA career within 10 feet of the rim.

Athleticism

I am a big fan of Valanciunas' athleticism for a young player his size. He runs the court well and jumps well. In addition, he has a reasonably quick second jump around the basket, making him a potentially effective offensive rebounder and shot blocker.

His major drawback at the moment is his lack of NBA-level strength, balance and defensive acumen in the paint. In fact, many times this past season, Valanciunas was manhandled around the basket by older and more mature Euroleague post players. It is the main reason it will be hard for him to log major minutes right away in the NBA.

Skill level

While Valanciunas has tremendous offensive potential, it is based more on his athleticism than his skill level. Right now, he scores most of his points off energy plays like offensive rebounds, fast breaks and in the screen-and-roll game, where he gets a running start to the rim.

His lack of strength doesn't allow him to get close enough to the basket yet to utilize any low post moves. And his passing out of the post is average at this point. But based on the fact that he is a near 90 percent free throw shooter this season, there is an expectation that an offensive game can be developed as he physically matures. That is critical because he shows, at this point, no propensity for playing on the perimeter.

Attitude and disposition

Despite his lack of strength, Valanciunas is a competitor who did not back down this season as a teenager in a man's league. Even when he was getting beaten up, he played hard and with emotion and showed a mature disposition as he took his pounding. His motor runs at full throttle and he looks like he loves to play.

Best case scenario: Pau Gasol

There are athletic similarities between Gasol and Valanciunas but I emphasize here that this is a best case scenario. Both were highly successful at the European junior level as both won Under-18 European titles. And both contributed at the highest level of European basketball as teenagers.

Don't expect for Valanciunas to have the same impact as Gasol did in his rookie season. As the No. 3 pick in the 2001 draft by the Atlanta Hawks, Gasol was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies for Shareef Abdur-Rahim. Then, as a 20-year-old in his first NBA season, he went on to average 17 points and nine rebounds.

If Valanciunas plays in the NBA this coming season, he will be one of the youngest players in the league at 19. However, with a potential lockout looming, it would not surprise me if the young Lithuanian spends another year honing his skills in Europe. While it won't make fans of the team that drafts him happy, it may be the best way for him to mirror what Gasol did in his rookie season.

Hoopsworld

Enes Kanter: The Cleveland Cavaliers are bringing Enes Kanter in for a second look and while it's easy to say they have Kanter on the board for the #4 overall pick, the Cavaliers apparently have told Kanter's agent that he is not auditioning for the #4, that he is in the running for the top overall pick.

Yeah, we're not buying that one either.

Sources close to the Cavs situation say they wanted another look at Kanter because his first workout was somewhat underwhelming and with Jonas Valanciunas said to be Cleveland's first option at #4, it seems the Cavs are trying to make a decision.

More than one league executive described Kanter as very ordinary, saying his skills are polished and that he has NBA size, but there wasn't much more too him than that. He is a very smart kid with a good work ethic so there is promise that he could work himself into a better player, but on the surface there just wasn't enough separation from the pack to warrant Kanter going in the top 3, with some questioning if he was really a top 10 player.

Kanter has some hype and some name recognition, so he may go a bit high because size is a premium in the NBA, but to imagine the blowback if the Cavs actually passed on Kyrie Irving and Derrick Williams for Kanter after losing LeBron James might be more than Cavs fans can stomach.

Valanciunas is far and away the best center prospect in this 2011 NBA Draft, there really isn't anyone else even close. He is a little skinny, but at 19 he has a lot of time to add weight.

He is a great pick and roll player, very instinctual in his play.

If the Cavs take Kyrie Irving #1, Valanciunas is the perfect compliment pick.

I am normally not very high on European players, but in this case he can play for my team... I have watched about 10 to 12 of his games this year on tape and he just oozes with potential.

-CAVS would target a wing, like Leonard, Singleton, or Thompson, if they are able to get another pick in the early to mid teens.

-SAC is trying to trade down, presumably to get Jimmer at a later pick.

-NY is trying to trade up for Jimmer, Biyombo, or others. They may make a deal with MIN for Jonny Flynn. Also talking to SAC.

* Yes, the Cavaliers appear to be very active in trade talks. They would love to acquire another lottery pick, or a young up-and-comer who has played in the league for a year or two. I don’t know who they are targeting, so don’t ask.

* I don’t think the Cavs are ready to trade J.J. Hickson. So I highly doubt he would be included in a deal for the No. 2 pick. I’m not sure Minnesota would want him anyway. That’s not a shot at Hickson, but you have to wonder where he would play with Kevin Love already at power forward.

* A couple insiders have said the Cavs are again exploring some sort of deal for Memphis forward Rudy Gay. Perhaps their best selling point would be to mention how well the Grizzlies fared in the playoffs without him.

* Others say the Cavs are reaching out to Atlanta. No word on who the Cavs would want (or if it’s even true). But I wouldn’t be surprised. Cavs GM Chris Grant was once an employee of the Hawks, so he certainly still has some connections there.

In my opinion, Grant’s moves with the Cavs have been outstanding, despite the fact he‘s been on the job for barely one year. It’s true that LeBron James’ departure gave the team lots of wiggle room, but Grant added to it with some nifty moves at the trading deadline. He has been brave enough to pull the trigger, but smart enough to know when to back away.

The Cavs will take Kyrie Irving with the No. 1 pick. They brought in Derrick Williams and will take another look at Enes Kanter on Monday, but that is for the No. 4 pick, even though Kanter is aiming for the No. 1 pick.

The Timberwolves will draft Derrick Williams with the No. 2 pick, as long as they don't trade the pick. That's a big "if," but assuming they stay put Williams is their guy.

If Irving and Williams are gone, Brandon Knight is the top guy on Utah's draft board. Unless the Jazz are able to make a trade or Williams falls to them after Minnesota makes a trade, the Jazz intend on drafting Knight.

Enes Kanter could go anywhere between No. 3 and No. 6. He will only go No. 3 if the Jazz agree to a trade. If not, he will almost certainly go No. 4 to the Cavs. But again, the Cavs could explore a trade involving Kanter. If the Cavs somehow pass on him, he'll either go No. 5 to the Raptors or No. 6 to the Wizards (no chance he gets past there).

The Cavs are the team highest on Kanter right now and are hoping he is available at No. 4. But they are open to a trade and have been very involved in trade talks, so it's no lock that Cleveland is the team he ends up with if he goes No. 4.

Every year around draft time, Hollinger comes out with his pieces analyzing the draft and one of my favorites is his Euroleague stat translator... The point is, the stats are outstanding for Valanciunas... Here's the projection (per 36), via The Painted Area:

13.5 pts, 15.9 reb, 0.7 ast, 62.3% FG

Those numbers would be terrific production... His rebounding numbers would rank him in Kevin Love category... His scoring would be incredibly efficient and put him on par with Marc Gasol, Jason Thompson, Tyson Chandler and Serge Ibaka... It'd be better than guys such as Greg Monroe and Derrick Favors...

Amongst others, sources are still pointing to us picking Kyrie (THANKS):
As it stands word out of Cleveland is that Kyrie Irving remains on top of their draft board and preference is towards Valanciunas at 4.

thrawn(A podiatrist on RCF)

Sorry, I've posted a couple things that aren't strictly news today, but there hasn't been much great news today. The good thing that we have a podiatrist on RCF, and he's explained what's going on with Kyrie Irving in this post.
The point is that it was an acute injury that has healed adequately, not a chronic issue that is likely to be an ongoing problem throughout his career. Many people have accessory sesamoids or other bones in the feet that can become aggravated. Most of the time, they can be treated conservatively, allowing the individual to resume their prior activity level without limitations or discomfort. Add to that Kyrie's access to quality healthcare, all treatment modalities, shoe modifications, there is no discernable reason to believe this will affect his career in any way, absent unforseen circumstances.

probballdraft said that if the Cavs take Williams, Wolves take Kyrie, then the Jazz take Knight. So yo're really looking at Williams and Walker. Irving is better than them combined.

Chad Ford from jonmchugh

• Not sure if Irving will be the #1 pick in the draft or not. Says he should be #1 pick
• Thinks Irving is ten times better than Walker & Knight. In a different league than the other 2
• Thinks that Irving will be a future all star in the league. Will have a hard time making the All Star team with all the guards in the east
• Kyrie doesn’t have a clear-cut weakness in his game. Doesn’t do anything at an elite level. Lacks strength of Rose, can’t see floor like Paul. Does everything well, nothing unique

• Williams measured tall enough to be a PF in this league. 9 foot standing reach at the combine
o Thinks Williams will be an all-star at the PF, not SF

• Only reason Kanter is flying up boards is because nobody has anything else to go off on
o Don’t really know anything about Kanter
o Good motor, good body, solid athlete, really intelligent

• One of the weakest top –end drafts in a long time
o Draft may not produce an all star – Irving best shot
o A lot of very solid rotation players in the draft

• Thinks we will be very active in the draft
o Thinks they’ll be aggressive as any team in the draft

John Hollinger

From two posts (here and here)
Kyrie Irving is the one sure thing
If I had to put my money on one player in the draft becoming a star, it would be Kyrie Irving.

OK, no shock there.

But here's the logic -- Irving's rating of 15.12 is the best of any perimeter player. While he compiled that in just 312 minutes, his low minute total actually hurts him in the Draft Rater (minutes played are a positive indicator of future success). And he's in pretty exclusive company. The other perimeter players to post a rating of more than 15 all became stars -- since 2002, the six perimeter players to do so are Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Dwyane Wade, Danny Granger and Rudy Gay. Based on those comparables, I like my chances if I'm Cleveland.

This insider post from Smooth here.
Draft trade update via Chad Ford:

One of the biggest challenges in projecting the draft is to trying to get a handle on who is exactly drafting where. Sources continue to insist that the Minnesota Timberwolves (2), Utah Jazz (3), Cleveland Cavaliers (4) and Washington Wizards (6) are all still open to moving the pick. Some of those trades could be with each other, but from what I can gather, none of the teams at the top of the lottery are sold with the players that are available to them.

"If someone really values the pick, and we can get something more proven, I think in this draft, you have to be open to a trade," one lottery GM said. "I don't like the risk-reward mix right now."

But the draft exodus may go even further into the first round. Sources say that the Charlotte Bobcats (9), Milwaukee Bucks (10) and Golden State Warriors (11) are also open to moving their pick. In this case the interest is all pretty specific. The Knicks, and a handful of other teams, are trying to get ahead of the Jazz. The target? BYU's Jimmer Fredette.

Thanks for this post.
Why don't I believe all this supposed uncertainty about the Cavs taking Kyrie Irving No. 1?

Maybe I'm wrong and Cleveland really is re-thinking whether the Duke freshman should be their guy. Maybe all this noise about Dan Gilbert being in love with Derrick Williams is true. But this happens frequently in the final days before a Draft. In 2000, there was, in the last 48 hours, new "concerns" about Kenyon Martin's knees -- never mind that everyone knew everything they could possibly know about his knees. They weren't great, and they could give him problems in the pros (which they have), but he could also wind up playing a dozen years in the league (which he has).

If Cleveland has doubts about Irving, why would the Cavs be meeting with prospective first-rounder Enes Kanter today? He's not going first or second; the earliest he could go is third, to Utah (see below), and Cleveland's not trading up for three; the only rumors that make sense involve the Cavs wanting to use four to move up to two, where they could take Williams and/or Irving. Otherwise, if they're staying at four, it's to take a big man, either Kanter, or Jonas Valanciunas, or Jan Vesely. And that would seem to indicate the Cavs are going for a guard at one. The only guard that makes sense there is Irving.

Besides, waiting until the last minute to make one's intentions known is just good business. The Cavs don't need to officially tip their hand as long as there's a chance someone will make a crazy last-second offer.

It's hard to put much stock in anything you hear right now, with all the gamesmanship that's going on, but this is the best guess I have at the minute on a Top 10:

Cleveland: Irving

Minnesota (or whoever trades up): Williams

Utah: Kanter. Just can't see a guard here. I guess I've changed my mind. Probably will change it again before Thursday.

Cleveland: Valanciunas. Does a buyout get done? I'm told by teams in the top half of the lottery that as long as they have word as late as the morning of the Draft that a deal will get done, they'll have no problem pulling the trigger. Even if you have to wait for him for a year, why on earth wouldn't you, if you think he's going to be that good? Where are these teams going?

For all the confident talk by his agent, it appears Enes Kanter is slowly dropping out of the top five of NBA draft. Poor workouts maybe?

ESPN/Bucher

Sources: Cavaliers Committed to Kyrie Irving.

The Cavaliers, after taking the temperature of the Timberwolves and Jazz to see if Kyrie Irving could somehow fall to No. 4 in Thursday's NBA draft, are now committed to the former Duke guard as the No. 1 pick and are fielding offers for the fourth pick, league sources said Monday.

In a perfect world for the Cavs, they would draft Irving and former Arizona forward Derrick Williams, which is why they were also interested in dealing for the second pick.

But what they found out is that getting both players would be a stretch.

Utah has called Minnesota in an attempt to move up to No. 2, looking to land Williams or Irving, a source told ESPN.com's Andy Katz. But the Timberwolves were sticking with the plan of keeping the pick if the Cavs don't select Williams, according to a source.

In preparation for the No. 4 pick, Cleveland was bringing in Kentucky point guard Brandon Knight for a visit Monday.

And former Kentucky student Enes Kanter of Turkey, who was ruled by the NCAA to be permanently ineligible with the school, will return Monday for a second visit.

The Wolves, meanwhile, won't let Williams slip beyond No. 2 and don't plan on trading Michael Beasley or Anthony Randolph.

Been telling you all for a month Irving & Valanciunas. Everything else is just noise, smokescreens, posturing, unless a deal happens w/ 4.

Deal still possible to move up or down from 4. Fluid situation. Irving has always been 1, if they stay at 4 my belief is Valanciunas.

I've been consistent, think Cavs like Jonas but would prefer to get him a few picks later. Also wouldn't mind Morris in a trade down from 4.

Theres interest in moving up for Williams but unlikely Cavs part w/ multiple assets it would require. No deal yet but time remains.

Cavs are as buttoned up right now re: draft plans as anyone. Good thing we've been on this for over 6 months.

Depending on who you ask, the Cleveland Cavaliers have either decided to make Kyrie Irving the top pick in this week's NBA draft, or they're still making up their minds.

This much is for sure: the Cavaliers like Irving. But on Monday, they had former Arizona forward Derrick Williams in for a workout, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com's Andy Katz. In addition, former Kentucky point guard Brandon Knight came in to see the Cavs for a visit, as did former Kentucky student Enes Kanter of Turkey, who returned for a second visit.

Texas freshman forward Tristan Thompson was also brought in to work out as the Cavs sorted out their options for the No. 1 and No. 4 picks.

Earlier on Monday, league sources told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher that the Cavs had decided to take Irving with the top pick. But later Monday afternoon, a source close to the situation told Katz the team is still considering several scenarios.

In a perfect world for the Cavs, they would draft Irving and Williams, which is why they were also interested in dealing for the second pick. But they know getting both is a stretch.

Utah, looking to land either, has called Minnesota in an attempt to move up to No. 2, a source told Katz. But the Timberwolves were sticking with the plan of keeping the pick if the Cavs don't select Williams, according to a source.

The Wolves, meanwhile, won't let Williams slip beyond No. 2 and don't plan on trading Michael Beasley or Anthony Randolph.

The source said Derrick Williams didn't look great in the workout, didn't do too much to help his chance of overtaking Irving for #1.

The news that Jonas Valanciunas isn't coming to the NBA next season means Cavs are very likely to take Enes Kanter at 4.

Jonas Valanciunas is still a hot name but he could slip to late lottery or maybe even out of the lottery.

Valanciunas could still go 4, 5 or 6, but he's more likely to go 9 (Cha), 11 (GS), 12 (Uta), or 14 (Hou). Could go later, too.

Yes. RT @Keshavsan Assuming Jonas rumors are true, does WAS feel pressured now to trade up to 4 to take Kanter?

Ken Berger thanks to Smooth

Sources would be stunned if the Cavaliers did anything but use the No. 1 pick to select Duke point guard Kyrie Irving. He’s the perfect package of talent and presence to shoulder the burden of carrying the franchise to new heights after the departure of LeBron James. The Cavs, however, are more than open to trading the No. 4 pick.

• The Timberwolves are comfortable with the outstanding consolation prize that comes with the No. 2 pick, and will get one of the only impact players in the draft in Derrick Williams. Plus, they won’t have to deal with the burden of having to choose between Irving and Williams. The Cavs, after all, could be wrong. The Wolves can’t. The only way Minnesota trades the pick is if someone “blows them away,” according to a source, and that would have to be a trade involving a superstar-caliber player.

The Cavaliers orchestrated an elaborate process to evaluate the optimal way of utilizing their lottery picks. That included discussions about selecting either Derrick Williams or Enes Kanter first overall, in hopes of seeing either Kyrie Irving or Brandon Knight drop to them at four. When it was all said and done, though, the Cavaliers did not have enough confidence in David Kahn passing on Irving at No. 2 to be confident they wouldn’t end up looking silly on draft night. That brings them back to where we all initially started, with Irving at No. 1, which they surely won’t regret down the road.

Jonas Valanciunas’ contract buyout is close to being resolved according to sources in his camp – a signature is the only thing missing at this point. Unfortunately for him, his team has refused to compromise on its insistence for keeping him in Lithuania until 2012, as we first reported two weeks ago.

This makes Kanter a much more attractive option at No. 4, as Cleveland would like to see improvement as soon as possible, even if that means taking the less talented long-term prospect.

The team continues to explore numerous trade scenarios as well. The Cavs still hold a $14.5 million trade exception that gives them significant ability to maneuver on draft night. Don’t be surprised to see the team acquire another pick or a young asset, as they are one of the most aggressive players on the market at the moment.

The latest mock posted here from Smooth
1 - Irving
Analysis: Two days before the draft, the Cavs are still claiming they haven't made up their mind. ESPN's Ric Bucher reported the Cavs had settled on Irving on Monday, but while the report was running on the ticker, owner Dan Gilbert was meeting with Derrick Williams in Cleveland.

While sources continue to point toward Irving's being the No. 1 pick, Williams' camp is holding out hope that it has a chance. Could the Cavs still have concerns about Irving's toe? Or are they worried that at No. 4 they can't get a solid big man?

4 - Kanter
Analysis: We had Jonas Valanciunas in this position last week. But on Monday, we reported Valanciunas' buyout with his team in Lithuania would prohibit him from coming to the NBA next season.

The Cavs love Valanciunas, but do they love him enough to draft him even if he won't be coming to the NBA next season? I doubt it at No. 4. The Cavs have been exploring a number of trade possibilities to move down a few spots in the draft. If they stay here, I think Kanter is their guy.

32 - Chandler Parsons, SF, Florida
If the Cavs get a point guard and a big man early in the draft, don't be surprised to see them reach a bit for Parsons here. He has great size, is very skilled and has been one of the best workout players in the draft.

54 - Jereme Richmond, SG, Illinois
Richmond is an athlete and little else right now. But as a long-term project, he still has major upside.
Also in regards to the #2 pick and trading it, he mentions this:
Still hearing the Wolves are hoping to get a great offer for the No. 2 pick. Hearing the best one they have right now is from Phoenix (Marcin Gortat and the No. 13 pick).
Varejao and #4 would beat it but would the Cavs do it? I'm not sure that's good value for Varejao...

Ford also tweeted this, which means (to me) that we are still in the ball game with Andy.
Still hearing the Wolves are hoping to get a great offer for the No. 2 pick. Hearing the best one they have right now is from Phoenix (Marcin Gortat and the No. 13 pick).

-Still says Irving is Goin number 1. Would be shocked if not him
-says he thinks, barring any trades, knight is going 3rd
-Believes best time to trade JJ is at the trade deadline to increase his value, and target certain teams.
-Irving has the opportunity to be a perenial all star. Loves him
-Sees Irving also as a Chris Paul-like superstar in time.
-Calls Jonas a mix of Z, pau gasol, and joakim Noah.
-Really doesn't see Kanter as a sure fire thing.

-JJ will net an UNPROTECTED pick in 2012.
-Less than 20% getting number 2
-wizards are extremely active. Realistic chance they trade up with the Cavs.
-Says at 6 Klay Thompson, Jonas, and Jan Vesely are all in the mix at 6 then
-Used Dan's own words " no shortcuts" in rebuilding this team. Doesn't believe any rational moves would be made with TPE
-No chance all that Pau for Varejao and Sessions crap.
-Knicks want the Jimmer
-Doesn't know if Marshon Brooks is a fit with the Cavs. Has heard conflicting reports that they like him or they don't.
-Cavs hold all the Cards and will be extremely active

Thanks again!
Ok this is te final segment of questions. It's amazing how infatuated the average Clevelad fan is in Derrick Williams.
I'm only gonna post the interesting responses.

-Thinks much of D-Will's college success was because he was physically stronger and more athletic than other college athletes. Says he will never be a 3, and isn't sure how he would be at the 4.
-says Cavs like Josh Smith, Rudy Gay, or Al Horford (nothing new, but he never mentioned iguodala which was interesting)
-Sessions is gone, and no way Baron gets traded with his contract
-Houston and The bucks are the biggest threats for Taking Jonas. He even said Houston is
looking to trade up for Jonas.
-Unlikely JJ is traded. As said before by other posters the Cavs want at least two first round picks. JJ is one of the hottest commodities in the NBA right now.
-Cavs very interested in Klay Thompson.
-He believes are over 5 years from contention again.

Cavaliers and Wizards swapping draft picks?
As I wrote in my mock draft, news that Jonas Valanciunas won't play in the NBA next season makes it unlikely the Cavs will select him at No. 4. However, it doesn't mean the Cavs still won't draft him. I'm hearing the Cavs are exploring moving down a few spots in the draft to take him. The goal is to secure another first-round pick to compensate them for not getting Valanciunas to play this season. One potential scenario has the Wizards giving up Nos. 6 and 18 for the No. 4 pick. The caveat? Enes Kanter has to be there at No. 4 for the Wizards. If he's not, there's no deal.

The Cavs, for their part, would take Valanciunas at No. 6 and add a third asset at No. 18. Jordan Hamilton and Marshon Brooks are among the possibilities with the latter pick.

If the Cavs don't select Valanciunas, it appears he still won't fall out of the lottery. I have him at No. 14 in my latest mock. But I'm hearing this afternoon that the Bucks might select him at No. 10 if he's on the board, and the Warriors are even more likely to take him at No. 12

Sam Amick: Cavs Dream Scenario Unlikely

Only Cleveland officials know how much was smokescreen and how much was due diligence, but the notion that the Cavaliers might not take Duke point guard Kyrie Irving No. 1 overall has faded quickly after last week's buzz. Sources expect them to take Irving, but their dream scenario of somehow getting Minnesota's No. 2 pick and selecting Williams as well isn't likely.

The consensus from sources I've spoken with is that they'll take Kanter at No. 4, in part because 19-year-old Lithuanian center Jonas Valanciunas isn't expected to play in the NBA next season. A source confirmed an ESPN.com report that Valanciunas' buyout deal with his Lietuvos Rytas team prohibits him from playing in the NBA until the 2012-13 campaign, although one source reminded that such agreements can "always be ripped up and changed."

Nonetheless, Valanciunas could fall fast if he gets past the Cavaliers. Golden State -- which is eyeing the likes of Washington State guard Klay Thompson, Congolese big man Bismack Biyombo and Florida State forward Chris Singleton at No. 11 -- would be thrilled if he fell that far. Warriors general manager Larry Riley said as much on Monday, indicating that there was an ongoing internal discussion about Valanciunas' significant upside and the merits of waiting on him should he be available.

Draft buzz: Kanter at No. 2? Kemba sliding?

• Cleveland won't make an official decision about selecting Duke's Kyrie Irving with the No. 1 pick over Arizona's Derrick Williams until Thursday, when the basketball operations staff meets with Cavs' owner Dan Gilbert.

However, Cleveland is satisfied with the health of Irving's right toe, which had ligament damage that kept him out of all but 11 games in his freshman season.

• The Cavs are still seriously considering drafting Lithuanian big man Jonas Valanciunas at No. 4, even though he may not be able to come to Cleveland until the 2012-13 season because of complications with the buyout of his contract with his current team. Kentucky's Enes Kanter is also a viable alternative at No. 4 if he's still available.

Cleveland is actively pursuing multiple picks deeper in the first round, as are Portland, Houston and Charlotte.

• Minnesota had serious discussions Tuesday night about taking Kanter over Williams at No. 2, assuming Irving is off the board. As of late Tuesday, the Timberwolves had Williams slightly ahead of Kanter.

Minnesota has heard multiple offers for the No. 2 pick, but the plan as of Tuesday is to keep the pick unless a genuine offer arises

• Utah is deciding among four players at No. 3 with two of them likely not within its reach. If Irving and Williams are indeed gone by the time they come on the clock, the Jazz are leaning toward Kanter over Brandon Knight of Kentucky, but that remains a fluid discussion for management.

ESPN interviews Chris Grant

From Chris Grant:

-----
Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Chris Grant said Wednesday his team intends to use the No. 1 and No. 4 overall picks in Thursday night's NBA draft.

Grant told ESPN's Jeannine Edwards that he knows who he wants to select with the top pick but still has to discuss the selection with the rest of the team.

Either Kyrie Irving of Duke or Derrick Williams of Arizona are likely to be the top overall selection.

If the Cavs do take him first, Irving will be the third point guard in four years to go No. 1, joining John Wall, who went to Washington last year and Derrick Rose, picked by Chicago in 2008.

Grant described Williams as "less polished" than Irving. He said he feels Williams has been "shot out of a cannon these last two seasons." Of Irving, he said the concern was his lack of playing time in college (he played just 11 games for the Blue Devils because of a toe injury) but he said the Duke guard comes across as someone who's been on the national stage and knows how to handle it. The Cavaliers heavily vetted Irving's injury and feel "comfortable" with the status of it.

The Cavs have toyed with moving up to No. 2, so they could land both Irving and Williams -- a two-handed slam dunk in this class. But that seems unlikely unless they can strike a deal with Minnesota, which has entertained offers but seems reluctant to give up the highest pick in franchise history.

When asked about trying to trade for the No. 2 pick and how the Timberwolves basically want the moon in return, Grant said: "Yeah, we don't have a moon!"

Dan Gilbert's 14-year-old son, Nick, the team's good luck charm in the draft lottery, will be calling in the team's two first-round selections.

On Monday, the team held its last round of workouts by hosting Arizona forward Derrick Williams, Turkish center Enes Kanter and Kentucky guard Brandon Knight at their suburban training facility. Williams and Kanter were in for their second visits, and the pair also met with Gilbert and some of his kids, adding another layer of mystery to the team's true intentions. Grant said it was an opportunity for Williams and Kanter to relax a little and put aside their first-visit jitters. The Cavaliers' GM said overall the team has been putting more emphasis on their interviews than on their workouts.

Information from ESPN's Jeannine Edwards and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Valanciunas is in much better shape in this draft than me or anyone else has given him credit for. Will have exact details on Yahoo tomorrow

We're getting ready to put together Mock Draft 7.0 for Thursday.

I've been on the phone all day and here's a sneak preview of where we think it's heading at the top of the draft, as of 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

1. We still have the Cavs taking Kyrie Irving at No. 1. While they haven't said anything definitively, most signs still point in that direction.

2. The Wolves continue to debate between Derrick Williams and Enes Kanter at No. 2. However, it appears that Williams still holds a slight edge there despite the fact the Wolves are beginning to tell teams they're taking Kanter. While I do think the Wolves are strongly considering Kanter, I think the fact that the news has gone public is an attempt by Minnesota to see if Kanter generates more trade interest than Derrick Williams did.

3. The Jazz remain silent about their decision at No. 3. But for the first time in a week, signals are starting to emerge that Enes Kanter might be the pick here -- if the Wolves don't take him at No. 2.

The Jazz are facing a classic dilemma. They think Kanter would be the best prospect available but feel a greater need at the point guard position. However, it appears the Jazz may go ahead and draft talent over need and hope they can land a point guard, like Jimmer Fredette, at No. 12. But if the Wolves take Kanter at No. 2, then the Jazz would snatch up Williams at No. 3.

4. If Kanter is off the board, the Cavs will have to choose between taking Jonas Valanciunas and Texas forward Tristan Thompson. I think they are actually leaning toward Thompson. The Cavs love Valanciunas, but have concerns about his inability to play in the NBA next season. Those concerns would dissipate if they trade down, but at No. 4 they are hesitant to take him.

Sources say the Cavs brought Thompson back for a second workout on Monday along with Williams, Kanter and Brandon Knight. Thompson met with owner Dan Gilbert and, from what I can gather, there's a growing comfort level with Thompson at No. 4. That should come as some vindication for our own John Hollinger. On Monday, Hollinger's Draft Rater pegged Thompson as the third-best prospect in the draft.

5. At No. 5, the Raptors will have a choice between Knight, Kawhi Leonard and Bismack Biyombo. Despite the recent push to improve their defense, I doubt they let a talent like Knight slip past them at 5.

Check back on Thursday morning for the full Mock Draft 7.0.

Sam Amick
He agrees with Ford's draft
1: Cavs - Kyrie Irving
Well, at least we had something to talk about up top here. After nearly a week of chatter that the Cavs might not take the Duke point guard after all, rival executives are back to believing he's the pick. Irving will solidify the spot and be a very solid piece of the Cavs' core that must continue to be reshaped.

2: T'Wolves - Derrick Williams
Every time I'm asked if there's one player in this draft with All-Star potential, a Williams highlight reel from his March Madness run starts playing in my head. Unless the Timberwolves find the impact, veteran player they're hoping to acquire by trading this pick, it's continuing to sound as if the high-flying big man with a dangerous inside-out game will be the pick -- Michael Beasley be darned.

3: Jazz - Enes Kanter
The Jazz remain somewhat of a mystery, with sources saying it has come down to Kentucky point guard Brandon Knight or the Wildcats teammate he never played with in Kanter. But I'm told that general manager Kevin O' Connor sees Kanter as the third-best player in the draft (behind Irving and Williams) and is seriously considering going big here despite the fact that he badly wants a replacement for veteran point guard Devin Harris.

4: Cavs - Tristan Thompson
I'm admittedly shocked to be dropping this early bombshell, but a source said there are strong indications this could be the pick as long as Kanter is off the board by No. 4. The Cavs need a player who can contribute now, and I think Lithuanian center Jonas Valanciunas gets passed up here because he doesn't fit those parameters. Huge upside and all, his buyout with his Lietuvos Rytas team (which was first reported by DraftExpress.com) prohibits him from playing in the NBA next season, and that is a problem for Cleveland. If the Cavs don't opt for Thompson, I'm told it will be a surprise if he gets out of the top 10.

All Bets Are Off
(Thanks!)
Kotoch Segment 1 Summary

- Remains high on Jonas, C with most upside. For a team rebuilding, they shouldn't be deterred from taking him due to having to wait a few years.

- Kanter would start immediately for Cavs.

- Thinks #4 will get traded, with Washington being most likely. No players exchanged, just #6 and #18.

- Sounds like SAC/SA trade will happen. Casspi, Garcia, #7 for Parker.

- At #6 Vesely, Leonard, Jonas, and Tristan Thompson in the mix.

- Every team that has worked out Thompson loves him. People in Thompson's camp don't think he'll last past #8.

- Doesn't think Klay Thompson will last past #11.

- Thinks Burks might fall to #20.

- Cavs not high on Brooks.

- Jordan Hamilton could be there at #18. His range starts at #11.

- First caller wants to take Kanter #1, Jonas #4, and a PG #32.......Kotoch says Kanter definitely not a candidate for #1. Range is #2-#6.

- If Knight goes #3, Cavs have big trade chip with #4 for someone that wants Kanter.

- HOU wants to trade one of their picks to get a 2012 first rounder.

- JJ Hickson is being shopped, but does not anticipating him being traded tomorrow. He is the only guy Cavs could trade to net a 1st round pick right now.

- Doesn't see Andy getting moved at all tomorrow.

- Doesn't see Rip getting moved either.

- If it goes Irving, Kanter, Jimmy Butler...is that a success? Kotoch says that would come across as an A, because all 3 are good enough to start right now for Cavs.

- For Brooks the range is #12-#21. Cavs aren't as high on him as others due to backing out of the workout with them last week. Didn't care if he was hurt, but he apparently worked out the next day with another team.

- JaJuan Johnson is moving up to a late 1st rounder. If he's there at #32, the Cavs need to take him. Compares him to a more polished Taj Gibson.

- E'Twaun Moore would be a good guy off the bench, but doesn't think he'll last to #54.

- Thinks Norris Cole could go to DET at #33.

- Has Lighty going somewhere around #45.

Ford posted a sneak preview of their final mock, and it seems that they sneaked out the only part we cared about, 1-5 (Thanks

Kahn, do something stupid!
On Tuesday, we were about 90 percent sure that Kyrie Irving and Derrick Williams would be the first two players off the board on Thursday night.

Scratch that.

Late Tuesday night, sources told ESPN.com that the Wolves were strongly considering taking Enes Kanter with the No. 2 pick.

However, don't get out your Sharpie and write Kanter into the No. 2 spot just yet. The Wolves are continuing to debate between Kanter and Williams and are exploring a number of trade possibilities with both the No. 2 pick and players on their roster. The outcome of those talks will ultimately steer the direction of this pick.

haha
Not sure I quite believe this yet, but Minnesota is apparently telling NBA teams that they are taking Enes Kanter #2 over Derrick Williams.

Almost everything else from 8pm-midnight

Some smoke, no fire.

See draft-day updates above.

I think Kanter working out for the 2nd time means that Cleveland is undecided between him and Jonas if both are still available at #4.

Should lock this thread, and continually update the OP. Makes it easier for everyone.

I was thinking that, but I'm not quite able to be on here 24/7:)rolleyes:), so everyone post reports here. And I'm worried I'm going to run into a character limit if there is only one post. But that would be a lot neater.

Even if Cleveland likes Kanter at 4 it makes sense to send the message that JV is the guy. It takes Utah out of the equation on attempting to extort us on swapping picks. Keep them guessing and let them just pick Knight.

if the thread gets locked, i don't think aislepathlight has the privileges to edit the original post. so we'll keep it open.

if you're going to try to update this, good luck and I would also suggest updating the first post. i doubt you'll run out of characters.

and occasionally bump the thread.

Great post. Thanks!

Excellent thread. I cannot wait for next Thursday fella's!

Not to clog this thread or anything, but watching the video of KI concerns me. At 1:40, when asked "what are your thoughts about the prospect of playing in Cleveland?" He replied "....I have no choice because Cleveland has the number one pick...." Hope I read too much into it, but to me it didn't sound like he is too thrilled with the possibility of Cleveland.

I am not at all concerned. He was just being careful not to say anything that would hurt him later. He basically said nothing all interview. At this point in the draft process smart players should know that you get in trouble for what you say not what you don't say. If he says he is really excited to play in Cleveland it sounds like he knows that he will be the #1 (and I don't think he does) or that he is more excited about it than the prospect of ending up in MN. He did in that interview what he wanted to do. He sounded likable and well spoken and while saying nothing.

Not to sound like jonmchugh, but that was the crux of the argument on the RBS today. To be so adamant against someone mainly because he gave a noncommittal answer was mind-boggling. To me, it was a smart answer. It was a very politician-like interview: not offensive to anyone, but not really answering what we want to know.

From what I'm hearing, it sounds like the Timberwolves, Cavs and Jazz are all very active in looking to trade down.
Interesting

He's saying he has no choice but to think of Cleveland everyday because we have the number one pick and that's his most likely destination. I don't see anything wrong with that.
