Restricted free agent from Clippers could fill hole at point guard

The Cavaliers' search for a point guard is focusing.

Los Angeles Clippers restricted free agent Marko Jaric is scheduled to visit the team Thursday. If things go well, it is possible the Cavaliers could sign Jaric to an offer sheet Friday, the end of the NBA's moratorium period.

The 6-foot-7 Serbian averaged 9.9 points and 6.1 assists for the Clippers last season, his third year in the NBA. He was also one of the NBA's best in assist-to-turnover and steal-to-turnover ratios.

Jaric, 26, isn't known as a great shooter, but he has a reputation for being a solid defender.

He shot 42 percent from the field and 37 percent from 3-point range last season.

He missed 30 games with foot and hip injuries last season but was healthy by the end of the year.

``I think Cleveland is a perfect place for him,'' Jaric's agent, Bill Duffy, said Monday. ``He's a good decision-maker, a spot-up shooter, and an on-ball defender, and that's the last piece the Cavaliers need.''

Conceivably, Jaric would match up well. His size and quickness combined with the 6-5 Larry Hughes and the 6-8 LeBron James would give the Cavaliers one of the NBA's biggest and most agile backcourts. All three can handle the ball and play multiple positions, giving the team extreme flexibility.

The Cavaliers have about $6 million left to spend in free agency. If they choose to go after Jaric, the Clippers would have seven days to match and retain him. In each of the past two years, the Clippers have not matched offer sheets, letting Andre Miller leave for the Denver Nuggets in 2003 and Quentin Richardson go to the Phoenix Suns last summer.

With Shaun Livingston designated as the point guard of the future and wings Corey Maggette and soon to-be-signed Cuttino Mobley under long-term contracts, there's a chance that the Clippers wouldn't match a substantial offer to Jaric.

Duffy insists that Jaric's interest in the Cavaliers is real and that he's not just looking to get an offer matched.

``Marko sees this as a very appealing situation,'' Duffy said. ``He wants to be a starter, and he matches up well with what they have in place.''

Duffy hinted Monday that it might take the rest of the Cavaliers' cap space to get Jaric, a deal that might be worth $40 million over five years. Several other teams, believed to include the Nuggets and, possibly, the Minnesota Timberwolves, have shown interest in Jaric and might visit him this week in Los Angeles. They could offer him a deal starting at $6 million per year.

The market on point guards might be set by Antonio Daniels, the Seattle SuperSonics free agent who is eyeing several offers this week.

Rumors have been flying for days that the Cavaliers had been targeting Lithuanian point guard Sarunas Jasikevicius, who is perhaps the best shooter on the market. He is still in the running to sign with the Cavaliers even though they are looking at other options.

Jasikevicius turned down an offer from the Boston Celtics, and his other major suitor, the Indiana Pacers, are believed to be backing off as well.

The Cavaliers are also believed to be interested in Washington Wizards restricted free-agent point guard Steve Blake, who is another combo guard who can shoot.

You posted earlier, but I posted more of the article for the kiddies....

Merge maybe?

Well I've been pushing Jaric for awhile so I see nothing to change my mind right now. The one concern is his injury histoy as he hasn't really had one healthy year in the league. He's tough, plays good D, doesn't turnt the ball over, and is a decent shooter. Sarunas maybe a slightly better fit becuase he's likely a better shooter but our defense is going to be strong next year with Jaric

this seems a little familiar....

Ok Ferry this is where you pony up and lock in on Sarunas everyone has been either denied or backed off pounce on him and get him now!

I don't think we should go after Jaric. As it states, they have to give up most, if not all of the cap space to ensure that LAC doesn't match. With our tight budget and specific needs, I don't think we should really be messing around too much with restricted FA's that we need to overpay.

We have a great option in Sarunas Jasikevicius (love spelling that name). People are backing off. I believe that it's a matter of how much money we will actually have (6 or 7 million is a big difference) so we know, down to the nitty gritty details, how much we will actually have to work with to get that PG and a backup big man.

My Sarus fever has cooled down. Alot. I am ready to look elsewhere because the Sarus hype just dragged for way too long.

Jaric would be a nice pickup and I would be more than content to have him here. Seeing him as restricted, I never really looked at him as an option.

Quit being such a bandwagon fan Infante. :runs:

You know you'll  when we sign him up

8 million per over 5 years though is insane for a guy who isnt even in double figures...we need to get Sarunas 1 Because he is the best shooter on the market which we need. 2 He is the best shooter and plays point guard. 3 He is coming bargain basement cheap 3 mill per is a hell of a bargain considering if a player scores 30 points anymore he wants a maxed out deal. And 4thlybecause with these other guys they are unproven or just so so and we don't need to get wrapped up in a big coslty long term deal. that was why we sucked so bad before we were overpaying kemp hill person murray and everyone. Don't let history repeate itself!

True. I have a hard time believing the Clips love Shaun Livingston *that* much. Eric Snow totally handled Livingston in the Clips game I went to, and well, that doesn't happen too often these days  I think the Clips have to match offers for Jaric.

He seems like a nice player, but he's a tweener, which is a little added risk for chemistry. Plus this is the Clippers we're talking about here. Players come out of there brainwashed every damn time. It's like a disease. I want to stay disease-free.

My Saras fever is still blazin!........he delivers in high pressure situations, clutch baby! He led his team to defeat the US in the Olympics! I posted this before but got no response........how many NBA players could go over to Europe, win (i believe) 3 consecutive Euroleague titles and MVP? Talk about his stats and weaknesses all you want, but Saras is a winner, who plays with FIRE! Jaric....eh, too expensive. Saras is a bargain at his askin price. I'll assume Infante was drunk when he posted that.....ha!

I really like Marko's height. It would be good to have a tall lineup that can cause a lot of mismatches. Hes a good passer and he can score. He will hit the open jumpshot and hes also a good defender.

Jaric would be a good sit, but I still much rather get Saras. He would come much cheaper and is probably better than him. We would have to overpay for Marko.

I fully expect Hughes to miss 20 games again next season and Jaric is likely to miss about 20 games every season too. It would really hurt us if both these guys went down at the same time for a big amount of games.

 Ok, dickheads, I guess I do have a little something left for Sarus. I'm just too tired of waiting. The signings were made so fast that It got me anxious for more. I would love Sarus here, of course. But I am getting tired of talking about him, thats all.
