So, are the Redskins, Chiefs, Blackhawks, Seminoles, Braves, etc changing their names as well?

Fuck this thread and fuck those people.

My typical Saturday night/ Sunday morning drinking post. Don't @ me
Totally agree, I fail to see how keeping him is even an option and I simply don't understand those people who want to keep a racist logo.

I get the logo in origins may be racist, but the people who are actually offended by the logo are not Native Americans but people who are white and have no ancestry with Native Americans. There is a big difference here with the whole thing. If the Native Americans were offended then yeah change things, but they aren't offended and if anything they actually like the logo for the most part.

There has to be a line drawn on how far protesters can go and if the people who are depicted are not offended then the argument ends there. If it keeps going then people will keep protesting almost anything and everything they want to. It goes to the point people who are the descendent of the actually 76ers could protest the name and we would have to change the name. We need to make sure things aren't offensive, but at the same time we cannot just allow a small minority especially those who aren't the people who are supposed to be offended trying to change a teams name/logos/mascots.

Not sure if this has been brought up in this thread, but this whole thing isn't going to end with just Chief Wahoo. As soon as Chief Wahoo is completely removed - which at this point is inevitable - the same people will go after the team name "Indians".

Might as well do a complete rebrand instead of what people will all of a sudden see as a half-baked change of just removing Chief Wahoo. I guarantee it will take less than a year before the focus is entirely shifted to the team name "Indians" and we go through the whole thing all over again. Getting rid of Chief Wahoo will hardly solve anything.

I don't have a strong stance on the issue either way, that's just how I see things going from here.

Once they take away the team name, they'll come after the fact they used the name and try to get them to stop playing baseball all together.

Slippery slope!

Funny, but he's probably right.

:chuckle:

No doubt. And they will never change their name.

IMO, only really two egregious sports franchise logos; ours, and the Redskins'. All others, while they have their own critics, have at least made effort to involve Native communities with respect to culture.

I can't wait until this debate is finally over next offseason.

Listen, we've examined all sides. I think Wahoo should go, but I respect opposing arguments. But here's the thing: the debate has already been decided.

Consider:

1) The Indians have been phasing it out slowly, first reducing it's size, then introducing Block C, then removing Wahoo from the primary logo.

2) Rob Manfred discussed it with team leadership. Shortly after the Indians were awarded the All-Star Game.

3) When the cream alternate uniforms were removed, Hoynes reported a a new uniform set would debut before next season.

4) Manfred said last week nothing significant would happen with Wahoo during this season. The qualifier of "this season" should be noted.

Chief Wahoo will be removed this offseason. Bank on it.

"We're not exactly aligned on its future," Dolan said. "But we will come to some understanding some time relatively soon, meaning before the start of the 2018 season and maybe sooner than that."

What middle ground exists in a situation like this?

I'd argue where they are currently a the "middlest" of grounds they can possibly ever be at right now. Indians have made the block C the primary logo, the Chief has been phased out of nearly everything at Progressive Field, new merchandise and uniforms (Mother's Day, Father's Day, etc.) feature the block C instead of the Chief. On the other hand, the Indians are still permitted to wear the Chief on their hats/sleeves and continue to profit off of the Chief through merchandise.

The trump card is the All Star game. What else can Manfred offer to persuade Dolan?

Imagine the Chief is gone from the on field uniforms/hats or scaled back even further by the start of next year.
