Cleveland Browns 2018 Season Thread

Zegura seems to think Desmond Harrison is going to start at LT

It would be like Hue (and also par for the past two decades) to put Desmond Harrison out there at LT after the team puts this out:

We gotta outsmart everyone. The Steelers will never know what hit em!

Those are always unofficial and not put out by the coaching staff or main FO guys.

Zegura has Lance Zerlein who said he had Harrison rated as a 6.0, which on his scale translates to 1st/2nd rounder and Day 1 starter.

Also mentioned, that the starters have been doing prep for the Steelers since the beginning of the Lions week and that has been closed to the media and Harrison has been involved.

Dane Brugler's write up on Harrison. He's was the 16th rated Tackle in the draft, a 5th-6th round selection. Hardly seems like a reliable guy but a guy with loads of talent.

BACKGROUND:
A three-star offensive tackle recruit out of high school, Desmond “Des” Harrison spent his freshman year of high school at Fort Bend Marshall in Missouri City, Texas before attending Page High School in Greensboro, N.C. for his sophomore and junior years and then transferring to Oak Ridge Military Academy (N.C.) for his senior season. His athletic focus was on basketball most of his life, but he returned to the football field as a senior at Oak Ridge and received considerable recruiting attention. Harrison committed to Auburn, but he didn’t qualify academically and he enrolled at Contra Costa Community College for two seasons, earning All-America honors as a sophomore in 2012. He was a three-star JUCO recruit in the 2013 cycle and received offers from numerous well-known programs like Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma, committing to the Longhorns. Due to academic requirements, Harrison didn’t start practicing with Texas until August of 2013 and had trouble staying on the field, appearing in only seven games as a junior back-up. He couldn’t get on the field in 2014 (the first under Charlies Strong) due to multiple suspensions, ultimately leading to his dismissal from the program. Harrison spent the next two seasons out of football before resurfacing at Division-II West Georgia for the 2017 season. He started nine games at left tackle as a senior in 2017, missing three games due to injuries, but did enough to earn First Team Division-II All-American honors. Harrison accepted his invitation to the 2018 Senior Bowl, but was unable to participate due to a knee sprain.

STRENGTHS: Gifted athlete…effortless lateral quickness with light feet…balanced center of gravity in his kickslide…rarely allowed a rusher to wrap his outside shoulder, shutting down the corner on tape…flexible hips to react to inside moves…uses his length to meet rushers mid-shuffle…loves to snatch, rip and burry defenders to the ground…aggressive run blocker, latching and running his feet…delightful mean streak and plays with an attitude, blocking through the echo of the whistle…earned All-American honors in his only collegiate season as a starter, dominating Division-II competition.

WEAKNESSES: Comes with more baggage than a 747 Boeing Super Jet – couldn’t find the field at Texas due to “multiple” failed drug tests and a “pattern of lazy decisions” according to someone close to the situation…preferred basketball over football most of his life and 2017 was his first season with consistent in-game reps over the last five years…obvious lack of experience, especially against top competition…needs time to transform his body for the NFL, adding functional strength and eliminating bad weight…wild technique and often finds himself out of position…caught leaning and doesn’t have a firm grasp on timing…needs to tighten up his punch and handwork, leaving his chest open for rushers…needs to better sink his hips to strengthen his anchor…climbs to the second level with ease, but little success, allowing linebackers to get inside-out…older prospect…history of injury issues, including missing three games as a senior (Oct. 2017) – also suffered a broken metatarsal in his left foot (Spring 2012) and a severely sprained right ankle (Oct. 2013).

SUMMARY: A one-year starter at West Georgia, Harrison is a heavily-traveled prospect, splitting his time at three different high schools and three different college programs with several pitstops along the way. He put together strong 2017 tape at the Division-II tape (albeit against inferior talent), showing off his rare blend of athleticism, flexibility and movement skills for a man his size. While talented, his mechanics and discipline aren’t equipped for NFL pass rushers, currently lacking the mental or technical know-how required for the next level. Overall, Harrison is a complicated prospect because the raw athleticism and God-given ability are off-the-charts, but he isn’t close to NFL ready and his history of character concerns are bright red flags.

GRADE: 5th-6th Round

Harrison was tabbed a low floor and high ceiling. I had seen him listed higher than Brian O'Neill and Jamarco Jones by NFL.com, then two rounds later by others, and in the end nobody pulled the trigger on a older guy who smoked his way out of Texas. I just want to see him in real NFL games before I take a hard line.

If Harrison starts, is Corbett benched? Kinda crazy to have the 1st, 33rd and 35th picks all sit.

Loving the Steelers drama is unleashed in the past hour but as a Browns fan I can’t help but think in the back of my mind that it’s a trap designed to lull us into a false sense of security, thinking that they’re a mess.

On the other hand, would really love to see us just physically and mentally break their will for the first time in about 25 years. I’ll obviously take even the most ugly of wins, but I’d love nothing more than for us to just decisively kick their asses all over the field.

Damn, this looks pretty bad.

I hope Chubb turns out to being pretty damn good or that pick will cost us the most this draft. Could've had a impact starter somewhere.

This is what good teams do. We’re just not used to seeing it. But the roster talent may dictate that Chubb and Corbett aren’t day one starters and with Baker, there has been a plan in place since day 1 that involved not starting this year short of injury/emergency/complete failure by Tyrod.

Two things matter most:

1. Are we winning games this year?
2. Do those picks have long, successful careers as impact starters for the Browns?

If both of those prove to be true, it’s far more important than whether they are starting game 1 as rookies.

Does it, though?

Are any of those rookies sitting because they're not good enough to play? Or simply because we have veteran studs at their positions?

Sitting/platooning their first year because they're behind Tyrod, Bitonio, and Hyde/Duke respectively is actually awesome for us.

I honestly hope Desmond Harrison can man the LT for years to come. That would be an awesome find by Dorsey & crew.

That could also swing Corbett to the C/RG/RT.

Younger more athletic line with Corbett and Harrison.

Still floored by Gaines’ status; I know it’s unofficial but it doesn’t sound like he’s looking at playing. Don’t want to be redundant but it’s just really surprising to me given how well he played last year in the right spot.

Given he was seemingly non existent in hard knocks (and I have largely ignored the defense in the pre-season), what is the post camp feeling on Jabrill?

Optimism? Skepticism? Mainly thinking inside the building.....hoping he emerges but have admittedly not followed very closely this pre-season.

Re- Harrison: his feet are awesome and he is obviously a great athlete.

But I am terrified of his strength. I think Cam Heyward might literally body slam him on the field. It's not good and I worry that starting him too soon could do more harm than good for this team.

As for Peppers, it seems like the Browns are committed to using Peppers at a 4th linebacker/hybrid safety. Which is obviously much better for his traits. Him attacking the line is a lot of fun and he is a talented blitzer
