Cleveland Browns Quarterback Position

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If we put statman and midwestcav in a room together, does only one come out alive?

Who is it?

Is this a good idea?

If yes, does someone want to take book for this event?

Tough call. The stats would tell us that @Midwestcav doesn’t know that Wyoming isn’t in the Midwest, so I’d have to give the edge to @thestatman on this one. That being said, they would both destroy @The Oi.

I do understand why people don’t want to take Allen, but his mental makeup and his drive are intangibles that cannot be overlooked with him. He needs to work on arm talent, but with the right coaching and support he will get to his ceiling since he wants it and will work as hard as possible to get there.

That sounds perfectly logical - and its basically the same point made by @Spectre - but the catch is in what is meant by the word "ceiling".

You are using it in the sense of "reaching his potential", or "becoming the best he can be". But when "ceiling" is used to discuss prospects, it actually includes guesses about a lot of unknowns that a given player may or may not have no matter how hard he works.

The truth is that we don't know what limits any of these guys may have. All of them may be basically about as good as they're ever going to get, no matter how hard they work. It's like the highly-talented young pitcher who throws 98 mph. It is entirely possible that no matter how hard he works, he'll never get enough control over that fastball to stick in the majors. Or the batter who just can't hit curveballs, regardless of how much time he spends in the batting cages. Or NBA players who aren't good 3 point shooters no matter how much they practice.

Allen may never develop the required degree of touch and consistent accuracy no matter how diligent he is. It is not just about attitude and effort.

I'd like to know why Rosen's shoulder injuries are an issue but Josh Allen's severe and multiple injuries are just a thing of the past. Allen even has a damn metal plate holding his shoulder together.

What makes people say Allen has a great work ethic, anyway? Yes, he got bigger, and gained weight, but his completion percentage and accuracy has stayed pretty much the same since high school. Isn’t getting *better* at something a sign of work ethic? Where has Allen improver to merit such praise?

No - that's actually the point. Guys who have great work ethics plateau all the time simply because they are limited in some aspect of their raw talent.

It's like people who think "working hard" is enough to succeed in singing. If you don't have the talent, you're not going to sound like Pavarotti no matter how hard you work.

This is really were most of us differ. Allen fans feel he will get better while people who don’t like Allen say he wont get better.

All the intangibles are there and I feel with the right coaching he will be an NFL starter. If you put 30 NFL analysts in the same room and asked about Allen, all will differ on his potential. Some see him as a clay they can mold and some see him as a Derek Anderson, a guy who can play QB but will never truly amount to anything cause of poor touch.

When it comes to Rosen all the analysts will say just about the same thing. I don’t think there would be a ton of difference on Darnold either. Allen is a boom or bust since he has to live up to potential that only some people believe he has but regardless since he will go high has to live up to that potential and prove his haters wrong in a sense.

A few years from now we will know who is right, but for now, he will have a ton of mixed reviews

Again, it's not black and white. It is likely that all of them will improve to some degree. How much is dependent on a variety of factors - work ethic being only one of them.

We need to know how far in the family tree your region deems acceptable for marriage or just FWB type of situation.

Kidding........ no really. Or not. Testing your humor gauge

The other part of your post seems reasonable. I watched maybe 8 games of Allen, maybe 10, I ain't kept notes for myself in a few years, so I speak from a watcher who would like to truly understand why you feel like you do for Allen. Me personally, I feel he is better suited to Not go in the 1st round unless it were for a team like the pats or Stealers. Even then, he needs some major work. 2nd round is more reasonable with where I think his strengths and weaknesses are. You know, my opinion. And yes I am an expert scout, just like the other million that scout from their couches or if duty calls, the bathroom :chuckle:

I see a lot of Derek Anderson with this kid. Can throw a country mile, but the short and intermediate passes are going to lose you the game.

I was severely unimpressed with his combine performance. Yeah, I know, it was the combine and all the receivers were new to him. I actually like that aspect of the combine, because it gives us a chance to see how quickly the qbs process how the receivers are moving and if the qbs can adjust their throws. Allen didn't impress me as I saw receivers who would be facing big injuries coming across the middle with his placement.

I wish the kid nothing but the best, as he seems like the ideal ideal prospect with his character. But, I agree with you, I don't see him becoming successful for the browns because we don't have the luxury of waiting 3-4 years before he should be the face of a team

Thanks for a less than hostile reply and an intelligent reason of why Allen is not your guy or why you have doubts. I worry about his short game the most. He has to learn touch, and I think he is answering it. I personally think the combine is a joke. I didn't see anyone who scouted the combine have a problem with his performance, so I don't know where you are coming from on that. The combine is no different than pro day to me. Just more people there. And Allen knows where he has to improve the most, and it is the short game.

I don't understand why the "anti-Allen" people can't understand how much the talent around a guy plays into his preformance. And how much the coaching and scheme play into it. That is huge in my way of thinking. If you know anything about football Norm, I think you have to understand where I am coming from. Just watching his highlight films should give a person enough knowledge that he can do some great shit. But watch where he is making most of the great plays at. He is rolling out , usually because he has legitimate pressure coming. Teams played an 8 man front against us most games. What would most coaches do to beat an 8 man front? You throw the ball! Our OC ran the ball off tackle. He didn't try and even get the edge or use screens or quick hitters across the middle. He ran off tackle and expected Allen to bail him out on 3rd and long. And on third and long teams would bring the heat, and lots of it. So anyone with football knowledge after having this shown or pointed out to them should see what he was up against. And Allen bailed our OC out the first year because he had some talent around him, but this year that was not the case. He had no running backs or receivers to help him. And our great OC never once ran the fullback all year until he got one carry in the bowl game. In a pro offense to top it off. He had to use the fullback as a blocker because our line truly sucked ass.

And our offense is predicated on being able to run the ball. When this staff was at North Dakota State they had a great offensive line. Far better than the one we have at Wyoming. So our OC could get away from his lame call playing with a line like that. But moving up a division he has not adapted. It is a miracle we have gone bowling and won and gotten back to back 8 win seasons. It was probably almost 30 years ago we went to back to back bowl games. So this program knows futility. And Bohl is doing a great job of building a program, and he is not taking shortcuts to do it. I have to give it up to Bohl and Vigen, they have gotten 3 qb's into the NFL in a decade . All from very small programs. But Bohl has to quit being loyal to Vigen and get us a new OC. Vigen can't cut it. It amazes me with Vigen calling the plays that 3 qb's will have gotten to play pro ball under his crappy play calling. And if you watch Wyoming play enough you will see the jr. high pass routes he has installed. No wonder our receivers can't get seperation. The part where they drop touchdowns and other passes that kill drives, is another story.

The way Wyoming uses the clock to shorten the game is another thing that ruins it for Allen or any other quarterback to get good stats. Once Wyoming gets the lead, we run the ball and 3 and out. We play for field position and let the defense win the game for us. Plus the staff didn't go out and get a running back when our running back left for the NFL early . So Allen was without a running back, receivers and a line. Pretty hard to look like an all pro when you have only started 13 games coming into this season.

I will just have to disagree with you on how people see him at the combine , workouts and the Senior bowl. He has improved every week by leaps and bounds. His 1st half of the Senior Bowl he was so-so, but still better than Mayfield. Not by a lot, but better. The 2nd half he rocked it. He answered every question about touch, poise, and made all the passes out there. If you ever watch him in the red zone he is very good. Especially considering what he had to work with. His arm strength serves him well in the red zone. He fits the ball in tight windows the best there. Wyoming never used the middle of the field on pass routes, which is a shame.
When you have a qb with his arm. I feel the anti Allen group are over thinking all the small things and building them up to be more than they are.

NFL teams aren't concerned with it, so why are all the armchair GM's doing it? It is because they don't want him or know enough about him to give him a chance. If the Browns draft him they draft him, it is out of our hands. I think NFL teams ruin good quarterbacks all the time because they insert them into the lineup hoping it will save their jobs. In the old days it was an investment when you drafted a qb. I don't know enough about Kizer to give much of an opinion, but it would have been better to have eased him into the future qb.

Knowing that the Browns have contributed to sacraficing quarterbacks who might have had a decent shot at helping a team if they had been given time to adjust to the NFL. I just don't want Allen or others to be added to that list. I am glad Dorsey was smart enough to bring in a transition qb. Cleveland has had more than their share of losing. I always root for underdogs and want the Browns to be successful. I hope this clears up a little more of why I defend Allen. I just don't think a lot of people on this board are being open about him as a qb. If he didn't have a shitload of good qualities , he wouldn't be in the running. And people who say he is as bad as they think, aren't being very realistic. You don't pick a kid that is a junior, out of a school and conference like Wyoming, to be a possible number one just because he throws the ball a long way and is tall. Teams are not that stupid.

Go take a look at the rosters in the NFL and look at the quarterbacks. How many fit the description of P5 players who were supposed to go high in the draft? Not many. You see a lot of the starters names and realize you never heard of them before, and they weren't drafted in the first two rounds. That Wentz was not a universal choice and he got the same treatment Allen is getting. People saying he played in a lower conference, another tall qb, won't be in the league long, etc, etc. How many on this board thought Wentz was the real deal? How about most of the starters in the NFL? Look at Goff and all the people who said he was a bust? He gets a new coach and OC, and presto, a Pro Bowl qb. So why can't Josh Allen so the same? Get a new coach, a system built around his talents, and put him in a position to succeed. Give him at least a year to succeed and then ease him in.

My money is on Allen. I just hope he goes to a team that realizes if they do it right that he can be another Rothlesburger or type of qb who can be there the next 10 to 15 years. Maybe the Browns will be that. So far Dorsey is building a team, not taking shortcuts. But Darnold may be the best fit for Cleveland. You guys deserve a break and a winner from what I know of Cleveland fans . For all the losing you guys don't give up on your team. Kind of like Wyoming fans do for UW. So I have a respect for that. Sorry this is long as hell, I just want to answer your question and clear things up.

That theory could be applied to all the quarterbacks in the draft. We have seen so many bust or only good enough to stand on the sideline and hold a chart. I like what Trent Diller put out there. That Josh Allen sent out letters to 998 colleges. He never gave up. When Allen got hurt his first game starting , he didn't
slide and took on a linebacker. It broke his shoulder and he has seven pins and screw in it. He came back the next year on a medical redshirt and was the starter and turned the program around from 2 wins the year before. He ended up winning 8 games on a crappy Wyoming team that had no defense.

Someone brought up the UNLV game he played that year and said how crappy he was. The team put up 60 plus points and he had at least 4 touchdowns or better. What does Allen have to do to please some people? That was a retarded post the poster put out about Allen. The guy doesn't play on the defensive unit. And the offense put up 60 plus points, but Allen played poorly? Give me a break.

I know you are not saying Allen doesn't have a good work ethic, but you aren't saying he does either. You are just putting out the possibility. I have never read anything but positive things about his work ethic. EverytHong I have read about is each year is how he comes back with more muscle, is faster, and tougher. He was the second fastest qb at the combine if I remember correctly. Yes, he runs like a girl. Lol. But in games he keeps us in games because he can run, and run well. I know he needs to work on his accuracy, and they figured out it was his feet. He was either overstriding or understriding. And sometimes throwing off his backfoot. Which Darnold is famous for also. And he showed he can take some mustard off in the Senior Bowl and at the combine and his pro day. So all that is woring in his favor.

I feel the Wyoming staff let him down, as they weren't good enough to correct those problems in advance. One has to realize, he is a rough project. He hasn't been enrolled at quarterback camps since he was 8 years old like Darnold, Rosen, and the rest of them. He was working on the farm, playing baseball and basketball. He is just now catching up. So just wait until he gets the right coaching and schemes built around him. Allen has a lot of upside because he learns and adjusts so easily according to the scouts. So he is getting some credit for that. It just seems a lot of you are trying to judge him or insinuate he can't overcome his downside. But he has already overcome so many things, and I don't see it stopping. Just my opinion and a lot of others that get paid to do it in the NFL. And the NFL people get a lot more info and inside knowledge from working him out than a poster on a sports board. Just a few dozen or more thoughts.

I'd like to know why Rosen's shoulder injuries are an issue but Josh Allen's severe and multiple injuries are just a thing of the past. Allen even has a damn metal plate holding his shoulder together.

I have actually wondered the same thing. Not a peep about Allen.

I don't agree with this philosophy. People like Bird, Magic and Jordan still worked hard even though they were at the top of the pile. Bird and Magic pushed each other every year. They talk about it all the time. So no, I don't buy your theory or opinion. I was good at ball, but there is always room for improvement. As soon as someone thinks there isn't is when they start regressing.

I believe that our take on Allen is similar, good tools to work with but he's a project, even to the right team?

I actually enjoy watching QBs throw at the combine. The throws are all the same for each qb and basic nfl routes and drops (step-wise). I like seeing who can lead a receiver in stride where the receivers don't have to make any adjustments to make the catch. I, like many browns fans, have seen too many qbs get our wrs injured because of bad placement. The other aspect I enjoy most, which I already touched on, is seeing the QB prospects throw to many different receivers and adjust their throws with how quickly they can process the receivers all running differently (speed, breaks in the route). I thought Allen did okay, but his placement is bad. Going to get some receivers laid out in the nfl. Allen needs to trust his receivers more and his arm strength less. I feel he is skittish (?) about trusting his receivers and tends to not know when to use touch. Brady is the best at trusting his receivers (more like the play). He throws to the anticipated spot where he expects and trusts his receivers to be there. Power 5 QB by the way;).

I think what gets lost the most in the draft is projecting the drive, the will to become great at the next level. Us fans who try to figure out what prospect we want are at a disadvantage as we don't spend one on one time with these guys to see where their heads and hearts are in the process. I wasn't high on wentz 2 years ago, thought he was a late 1st/early 2nd round qb. He had good/great intangibles (accuracy, placement, arm strength), I personally thought the nfl stage would be too big for him early. He actually went to the perfect spot in Philly once they got a coordinator and hc, who in combination, designed the offense for him to succeed. Not sure he would have had the same thing happen here in Cleveland. The jury is still out on Wentz, but it's looking like he's going to be mvp a few times in his career.

On a personal level, my take, I think most are razzing you because you initially started bragging up Allen like the 2nd coming because you have seen him a lot more than most of us during his live games and not a recording. Paints a picture of you being biased towards him. Making interaction with you seem one-sided. Just my opinion, as I have been in similar situations with my affinity towards Michigan players.

Edit: also, since we have been a terribly ran team since 99, most browns fans have become quite adapt (not always) at scouting prospects. The draft has been our super bowl for far too long lol
