Cleveland Cavaliers Summer League 2019

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
they have been talking about him not playing in summer league since he got drafted, and there is no reason at all he isn't healthy enough to play by now, so there is absolutely nothing stupid about assuming they only picked him as trade bait. Will a Sexton Garland back court be fun to watch offensively? sure, but they will be the worst defensive back court in the league. So it shouldn't be that surprising to conclude that unless they are willing to lessen both of these players values in the event the experiment fails in the hopes it doesn't fail , that Garland won't be in a Cavs jersey by October.
They drafted him because they really like him. That’s it.

He may not play because he’s not in game shape and they want to be cautious with him from the injury. The meniscus takes time and heals slowly.

And for the record, he could still play in the Summer League if healthy and they could still trade him—which they aren’t.

It’s completely independent.

we will see, but I disagree there is any justification for him not playing in SL unless they are making sure he doesn't get hurt for trade purposes not because he isn't healed.

Or... how about just making sure he doesn’t get hurt for our purposes...
Sure that makes about as much sense as drafting a pg two years in a row.
I understand the proposed idea is they can coexist and I actually think they could do very well together but there is no chance even if they were better defenders than they are in the long run that they will be good enough defensively to win a chip.
Who knows maybe in this weak class they are happy with a future 6th man Lou Williams type which is Garlands best comp with their 5th pick, but trying to envision a success story with two guards that can't defend especially bigger longer wings seems improbable to be their actual plan.
They did nothing in the draft to address the atrocious defense by the roster last season and the best player they drafted went 30th.

Lou Williams is not Garland’s best comp.

The kid is going to be a very good starting point guard in the NBA.

He overlaps a bit with Sexton, but you’ll handle that situation when we cross that bridge. That isn’t anything to worry about for another year or two.

I hope you are right if they do keep both. I doubt it works out

Think about it this way...

As long as Sexton is who our FO thinks he is...

And as long as Garland is who our FO thinks he is....

We are in a great position regardless, even if they eventually prove they can’t play together on a contender.

In that situation, it’s a good problem to have because the odd man out would have a lot of trade value.

In the interim, be patient. There is no reason to rush one out the door. Let them play together and see what each can be. They will help each other offensively, it’s a good complement. The issue is defensively, not offensively.

This should be fun.

So if Garland doesn't play in the summer league because of his knee. And Sexton doesn't play because of over-use in the regular season, who is our PG in the summer league?

Some guy they sign off the street.

There are a million Scoochie Smith types who have no legitimate NBA future, but are competent enough to get a group of summer league guys into their half court sets.

I could see it. Even if it’s just to play competitive ball. You can only do so much in pick up games.

Summer ball is just pick up games to be honest, the play makes my head hurt sometimes.

That said, if Sexton plays its because he is a basketball obsessed gym rat and somehow convinced management to let him play, not the way around.

I could see Sexton playing because HE wants to get the work in.
