Cleveland Indians 2018-2019 Offseason Outlook

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Very productive post, thank you. I’m glad you only come to troll us Tribe fans.

Trolling Tribe fans? I'm as big a Tribe fan as anyone. My frustration is devoted to people on this board who said I was lying or plain wrong to suggest that the Dolans were cutting payroll and the team wasn't going to reinvest those savings back into the roster.

What exactly is "trash" about it?

There were plenty of posters who claimed that the team was going to reinvest its savings, and I'm calling them out for bogus takes.

It’s not trash, it’s a landfill

I don't think it was unreasonable at the time to think the Indians would reinvest the money saved

Didn't expect to be in play for Pollock, Brantley, etc. but passing on Marwin at 2 yrs $21m is tough to swallow. Even though it has been apparent for weeks now that we should only be expecting minor league deals

Congrats on being right dude!

I certainly don't want a victory lap, I just think it's lame for posters to dismiss concerns about the financial austerity of the this offseason as being erroneous, when anyone (even a nobody like me) could see it coming.

They'll spend money in July and August to improve our team. Outbidding the Yankees for Bruce is still on their track record.

I'm pissed off about cutting costs and not adding as well, but such is life in Cleveland. Dolans expect sellouts in April and May.

Why are we pretending Marwin getting 2/21 is a steal?

He had 1 great year, but has never been worth more than 1.6 fWAR in any other season.

I'd be more upset if it were 2/15 or a 1 year "prove it" deal, but 2/21 is not a price I'd want to pay for him.

Well yeah...there were maybe 10 impact bats and relievers combined this entire offseason. Not exactly talking about a huge crop here...

There are a lot of solid hitters and relievers still left on the market with consecutive stretches of plus play and their prices are coming down fast.

And trust me, the Indians are not sitting on their hands...

I’ll say this again, as if I haven’t said it enough in this section over the years...the Indians do not leak to the media. Anything they say to the media themselves, take it with a grain of salt, cause they’re saying it for a reason. Anything reporters or beat guys say about the Indians isn’t coming from the Indians. Full stop.

So again. Patience...

"They’re going to add 3, most likely 4 MLB deal guys when all is said and done. So relax for a bit, season doesn’t start tomorrow."

"They have about 20 million in space that they are open to using, just some of that they may want to use later in the season."

"Patience is needed - if the Indians roster looks the exact same in a month as it does now, I'll join you in your frustration..."

If you were hoping for any of those “affordable” guys this winter, plus the ones you listed above, your expectations were way, way off.

Indians have never and probably will never operate that way. Why you would expect them to do it now is something for you to figure out.

And for how “affordable” you think some of those deals are, 3 of them would be in the top 5 in APY deals that the Indians have ever given out in free agency. You need to readjust your ideas on what is affordable with the Indians and add that context.

They have a chance with both Moustakas and Marwin, but that’s because they’re being patient.

And yes. The Indians are going to bank on some buy low relievers having rebound years, a la Cody Allen who is still in the cards, and a buy low or 1 year vet bat to try and plug a hole.

They’re going to add 3, most likely 4 MLB deal guys when all is said and done. So relax for a bit, season doesn’t start tomorrow.

@AZ- Marwin and Moose both mentioned and both were signed on friendly deals.

Man, you guys are adding a lot by having your circle jerk. Congrats on the sex!

I’m not really sure how it’s productive go and quote posters like this. This is why this section is dead most of the time.

Indians were looking for a 1 year or a 2 year with a team option or mutual option for year 2 for around the price range he got. Never fell to that point, but it got close.

I’m going to keep stressing that they aren’t looking to lock up long term money for a couple reasons.

Indians most certainly inquired, which tells you how much swing Tito has because Marwin is his wet dream and he got the front office to talk to Boras, which is a rarity.

People will convienently forget that free agency takes 2 parties. Good for him getting a 2 year deal in this climate. But to act like the Indians didn’t try isn’t true.

Yes, monetary constraints suck. Long term constraints hinder deals like this one as the front office values its flexibility to keep its own players over external free agents. Always has, always will.
