I think he can - just give him some time.

In college, Sexton was the kind of guy who could play 4 on 5 and make it look good because of his fantastic individual skills. He did what his team needed him to do. Obviously, his role as a PG in the NBA has to be different.

His work ethic and quickness are great, but he is also a very, very smart kid. He may have a fairly unusual NBA trajectory in that I suspect we'll see more improvement in his skills, including court vision/passing, than we are used to seeing with the vast majority of players.

Of course, maybe that won't happen. But I'm not going to assume that he can't be a good distributor until we see him stop improving.

After 800 minutes on the floor, I think the stats tell us pretty clearly that the Cavs offense has frequently stalled & gone cold when Sexton is on the floor. The team's assist rate only drops a bit when he comes into the game, but big problem is that the Cavs FG% drops by 3% while the opponents FG% goes up by the same amount. https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/s/sextoco01/on-off/2019

Clarkson stifles the offense a bit but doesn't hurt the teams shooting as much, and the defensive improvement with Clarkson on the floor is big enough that the team as a whole actually plays slightly above its low average. That says something, considering how many minutes he shared with Sexton in the first dozen games. https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/clarkjo01/on-off/2019

Larry Jr. has had a streak of 5 good games that pulled him out of the basement. He's only third worst on +/- now.

Cedi has the worst +/- now, but with him, almost all of the pain is on the defensive side. Opponent ORTG = 124 with Cedi on the floor, which is just about the same as saying opponents score at will when Cedi is in the game. The opponents shoot 8%(!) better, rebound 3% better, and get more assists when Cedi comes in. https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/o/osmande01/on-off/2019
I'd like to see these numbers controlling for Hood and Clarkson, but since these asshats are in most of our lineups I doubt there'd be enough useful history without them.

He's played almost all his starter minutes with Hood who I think is a worse ball stopper than Clarkson. He frequently tries to turn no advantage into an advantage by dribbling which he isn't very good at. Clarkson can at least consistently get by his guy. Hood rarely just sees nothing and passes it along. I think it's particularly bad for Cedi who can attack a weakness, but he doesn't get the ball often and then forces it.

I agree. I hope we have trades or cuts coming soon for both Hood and Clarkson. They are just hurting the game in every possible way when they're on the court.

I see that Mike Conley-esque floater coming along. Took more 3s tonight and I appreciate that he tries to do it within the flow of the offense. His vision isn't bad, really this unstructured offense does him no favors as someone that isn't a natural passer. Kyrie could average 6 a game but I think his game is more tailored to this style and his offense frees up other guys. Sexton isn't getting double-teamed yet.

Get this kid a real coach and he could be something special.

I really hate the leeway Clarkson gets and the lack Sexton gets at the end of games. Clarkson basically allowed the Knicks to come back to tie the game then when we went to the offense and defense only lineups Clarkson got to stay in while Sexton had to sit. I want a coach that is 100% on board with Sexton.

Whether they win or lose the game, Sexton needs to be taking those key shots. Those big moments is when we see what guys are really made of

And tonight however it was Delly ... Would have rather had Sexton Hood and Clarkson on court

Still one dimensional so far.... He is not yet consistent in offense and when his shot is not falling, he doesn't affect the game in any other way postively... Sorta like Dion Waiters in his rookie year, hope his trajectory is different though and he develops into a well rounded player, maybe Delly can mentor him...

Exactly it's not like Clarkson plays like n all-star when he plays at the end instead of Sexton if anything he makes our team worse.

Koby will have his work cut out for him to really handicap Drew to force him to develop our young players. I wish Koby and Drew were on the same page.

Delly and Sexton would be a fine backcourt. Clarkson and Hood should be interchangeable, damn near identical volume scorers

That's gonna be hard, we know that Drew would play our mascots as bigs before playing Zzizic at least.
