Cutco Knives

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Some of Vector Marketing former independent contractors have accused Vector Marketing of unsavory business practices.[9][10] Vector frequently advertises in newspapers and on fliers posted on bulletin boards at college campuses, but seldom do those advertisements explain the nature of the job.[11]

Vector Marketing used to require sales representatives to make a security deposit of approximately US$139 in order to procure a set of knives for demonstrations, prompting some to complain about this policy, even when the deposit was refundable if a representative chose to quit or the contract was terminated and the sample kit was returned.[9][10][12][13] The sample kit must be returned if the representative concludes work with Vector.[14] Students who work for Vector Marketing are considered independent contractors and are not reimbursed by the company for money they spend on transportation expenses and other common business expenses while working or for the time they spend at training sessions.[6][9] In the 2008 case Vector Marketing Corporation v. New Hampshire Department of Revenue Administration, the Supreme Court of New Hampshire ruled that Vector employees are independent contractors and Vector is thus exempt from the state business profit tax.[15]

Vector was sued in 1990 by the Arizona Attorney General and in 1999 by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. In 1994, Wisconsin ordered Vector to stop providing dishonest information to recruits.[16] Arizona and Vector agreed to a settlement that punctuated a series of state actions against Vector's Tucson manager that spanned seven years. Vector agreed not to misrepresent its compensation system as part of the settlement. Vector no longer recruits in the US state of Wisconsin.[17]

In 1996, The Washington Post reported that of "940 Vector recruits surveyed, nearly half either earned no money or actually lost money through working with the company."[17] A recruit who was successful in a lawsuit against Vector for failing to adhere to labor laws in New York co-founded a group, Students Against Vector Exploitation (SAVE).[18][19]

In 2008, Alicia Harris filed a federal class action lawsuit against Vector. Harris alleged that Vector violated California and federal labor law by failing to pay adequate wages and illegally coercing employees into patronizing the company.[20] The case, Harris v. Vector Marketing Corporation, is pending a final settlement approval for US$13 million before Judge Edward M. Chen.[21]

This is from wikipedia on vector marketing which is a completely owned by Cutco. I guess we arent the only ones that think Cutco is basically a scam. That part that really got me is half of the employees either lose money or make no money. That said, the life lesson here is invaluable.

It's good for the kids....it will toughen them up and help season them for a real sales job. :chuckles:

(((off to think about what product I can sell with the exact same system)))

No shit, I have been thinking about that. Like I said earlier, it almost creates a situation where you remove the competition. Go after people who didnt expect to buy a vacuum or a knife or whatever and they dont even shop you. Price is almost not a concern. When I sold Kirby's in 1993, the cost $1400. You would finance them. This is a freaking vacuum. Only vacuum today I would spend $1400 would be a riding Vacuum.

My wife and I have been discussing moving to PA and I gotta say...Sheetz is one good reason. Fuckin love those places.

Anything you see on an infomercial.

One of my buddies did this. Pretty funny story I won't tell, but the same shit happened to him. He thought he found this sweet job that would pay him pretty solid money for a 17-18 year old kid and then he was gone 6-8 weeks later complaining about the company and how they screwed him over and he never got the money he was told he would receive.

Looks like you already told it...

LOL Lee...I had a Kirby rep over a couple months ago. Young kid pulling this vacuum out of his shitty car. Really solid dude, but didn't get me to buy. I had no idea of the cost of these things - he dazzles me with his presentation, picking up all kinds of shit from my carpet.

He then asks what I would pay for such a device, and I said $300. He tried to show me more tricks, then showed me the flier - $1900. But, he said he could sell me his demo for $999 that day. He even called his boss in front of me to ask. Unfortunately, I sent him on his way w/o a sale, but gave him the name and number of 3 of my neighbors. He said if a neighbor bought one, he'd hook me up with one for $700. Sweet.

I bought a Dyson pet vacuum a month ago instead for $399. I checked some youtube vids comparing it to the Kirby...but was unclear as to which was really better.

I have the shark and i am very happy with it. I only have carpet in 2 bedrooms, the rest of the house has floors, but the Dyson is a solid machine and priced about what a Kirby should be priced at. Kirby's are great vacuums, but to give you an idea, a new one that went for $1900 or even $999 as the kid was trying to sell you, will go for about $375 gently used online. I Dyson that went for $500 will sell for $400 gently used. My point is that its a great product, but vastly overpriced. Same situation with Cutco. But its all about the marketing. Back in 1993 I would make $350 for selling one vacuum. Thats insane amount to sell one vacuum. The mark up was almost criminal.

Then again, I do believe something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I hear all the time "My house is worth $400k, but I could only get $275k for it right now"...no your house is then worth $275k period. Makes me cringe every time. Or, well I live in an area that hasnt been effected by the down turn in the housing market. If that was true, 75% of America wasnt affected, lol.

I almost got roped in by Vector. Did my research and realized it was not a scam, but pretty damned close to one. Hilarious stuff. I felt dumb, but then I realized I was smart enough to do the research and be wary of it to begin with. Was glad.

I'll add that when I didn't return their phone calls, they literally began calling me every other hour begging me to come in. Also emailed me a dozen times. :chuckles: Finally, they stopped, thank goodness.

Cutco is alright stuff but it's ridiculously overpriced. You'd be much better off taking the money you'd put into those knives and getting yourself a real chef's knife that doesn't suck ass. Most of the work you'll do in a kitchen can be done with just a chef's knife... add a paring knife for smaller tasks and a bread knife to it and you're pretty set unless you really need to get specific for whatever reason. These giant knife sets are just a way for companies to sell you a shit ton of utility knives and different versions of the same knife that you don't really need.

It's only overpriced if you lose it, since it's guaranteed FOREVER. A few of the people I've sold to so far already had Cutco knives that were 20 years old, and bought more because they realize it's a good product. I agree that most people don't need the big sets. I've been selling mostly custom sets of 3-4 knives.
Also I already got my first raise now I'm at 15% commission. The people who don't make money at this job are either lazy or not good at selling.

lol good job at keeping your attitude, dont get negged out!

If you worked in the service industry and know a lot of people, this actually wouldn't be a bad side job.

Any updates with the cutco business Chief? Did it make your wildest dreams come true?
