Kirk Cousins baby!
So how did they fuck this up? Oh, they're the Browns. That explains everything
The Browns could have easily franchise tagged him. This is popular opinion right now. I think the 49ers have pre-negotiated the next JG contract and that he was unwilling to do so for the Browns. Yes, we'd have given up a 2nd (or late 1st) for the QB of the future, but not for a meaningless 1/2 season rental.

A franchise tag is basically a one year forced contract that costs the team the average pay of the top 5 salaries of the position the player is.I am unequipped to have this discussion, as I don't know the ins-and-outs of the franchise tag rules, so forgive me if I am wrong here:
we tag him and if he goes, we get draft pick compensation (what picks?).
we pay him a lot, and if we tag him again, we pay him a ton.
It's also possible that Hue didn't think he would be a top 20 NFL QB.

What happens when he leaves anyway? Is the salary including their amortized signing bonus (like, their cap hit) or their annual pay only? What happens if he has to sign it again next year? What happens if he refuses to sign it?
Dagg

a qb can be franchised for 3 years in a row, ask Kirk Cousins.
It would cost us about 25 million next year for Jimmy G. One year contract.
Wait, I am looking at overthecap.com and it shows that Cousins has only been franchised 2 years in a row. https://overthecap.com/player/kirk-cousins/1443/
What's missing in everyone's explanation is that you received the greater of 120% of your previous year's salary OR the average (mean) of the top 5 paid players' (cap hit NOT cash paid) salaries at the position, from the previous year.
That's what makes Cousins' S so F-ed: he got a 20% raise on his last franchise tag, which is obviously a lot of $. That's how LeBron would do it BTW: just keep getting tagged every year - it's amazing! Like Stafford has $60M guaranteed, but Cousins and Drew Brees are killing the game. No wonder Drew likes those quick 3 step drops
