Danny Green: Long Time, No See

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Let’s not get too excited. Green had 3 points, 4 boards and 0 assists in 20 minutes. We have a whole bench full of guys who can do that. But at least he proved he was playable.
He played much better than Cedi, for instance, who played 23 minutes, went 1 for 7 from 3 and turned it over 3 times. Our bench is not good, but Green wasn’t wrecking several possessions with his play like Cedi did.

He rebounded his position, hit an open 3, but his pressence spreads the floor becayse you cant leave him like Okoro,

Cant look at stats to get a full story on impact

Green went 1-2 while playing defense. No one was questing Green's shooting ability. The worry was if he was going to get lost on D and give up easy buckets. If he can stay on the court while playing decent D, his shots will come to him. This was a win tonight.

I’m not complaining. Green was OK and his gravity as a shooter certainly helps. And his experience on great defensive teams also means he knows how to play even if his body can’t do what it used to. But in 20 minutes he only made 1 basket and was -2 in a 17 point win. That’s hardly game changing. In his defense, he was relegated to the stand in the corner role and that player isn’t getting a lot of action unless you are Okoro or Stevens who the opponent wants to take shots.

They didn’t look for him offensively or attempt to get him the ball really minus the one three.

Play him.

Compared to Levert, Rubio, or Wade in the previous 4 times we played the Knicks this yesr, having a bench player that can notch a -2 in 20 minutes is a game changer
Wade played his best game of the year against the Knicks. He was part of the record 3 point spree along with Love and Mitchell. But that may have been when he was starting.

Green is awful. But he can hit a spot up open 3.

Green actually played really good defense on Randal on the perimeter. I think he needs to use that old man strength now. That 3 minutes of garbage time where Caris, Neto and so on turned the ball over while our best scorer was Robin Lopez... Yeah, that's definitely why Green's plus minus was trash. And the general complaint is we don't do enough motion offense to get 3 point shooters into better positions. I just don't understand how the Warriors' template is there yet we don't ever try it. Offball screens are so key but we rarely see them.

The way you guard guys who like to drive from the perimeter is to body up on them, because that takes away the space they need to make their move and accelerate. It's tough to do that on smaller guys who are quick enough to move before you get the body on them, and/or who can make the quick pass and then cut off that pass, but it works well on the Knicks big guys. Body up on them fast, and they don't have a lot of options other than to make the weak bail-out pass to a guard curling behind them.

But if you give them space, they'll kill you.

He was probably around +8 in non-garbage time.
With the lack of bench production there is little reason not to give him some minutes. At the very least he’s better than Okoro.
