Derrick Rose: Outta Here!

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Jesus christ Lue...do you ever tell players anything else?

Rose is talking about passing and Lue's advice is to "attack the rim".

Considering Rose was in the top10 of points scored in the paint in the entire NBA last season, does it not make sense for him to play to his strengths first and then build out from there? Do you want him dribbling around the perimeter and pulling up for 20 ft jump shots? Do what you do best, drive/slash, finish the bucket if its their or pass it to a trailer/kick it out to a shooter like JR/Korver/Crowder/etc. if the shots not there

Kyrie could really shoot though and he had by far the best mid range game in the NBA.

I do think some of Rose's short comings in New York can be fixed.

In the right environment he can be a plus defender, absolutely better than Kyrie.

He can also be a more willing passer in the right scheme. He will never be Chris Paul but he can be better on the margin.

But he will Never ever shoot it like Kyrie. That's for sure!
Kyries mid range game is fools gold. He couldn't draw fouls with it and it's less efficient than a three or a shot at the rim.

Why not? In this case as it was with Kyrie(Kyrie driving opened up the whole offense) it makes sense.
Let Rose do mostly the thing he is still elite at.. get to the basket and either finish or kick it out.

I would be concerned if Lue told Korver to attack the Basket but with everyone we know he has told to do so it makes sense.

Rose's best passes are off the drive and kick game. I agree. Still, this is the most talented Roster Rose has ever played on. He better move the rock once in awhile.

He averaged 7.5 and 7.9 Apg in his best days. In his Prime he was a much better passer than Kyrie ever was. I really think his passing will be fine.

For sure. Just meant to emphasize that his ability to get to the basket and his passing game are related. Usually a good pg is able to beat his man and that opens up the pass as the defense scrambles.

I want him to take advantage of whatever weakness the defense brings.

Very interesting article on Rose in ESPN:

One particular part I found promising re Rose and passing/facilitating:

"I get to play my game," Rose said. "Before I made it to the league I think I was a facilitator. The NBA made me into a scorer. I had to score my first year with the Bulls, and I think you'll be able to see my passing abilities once I'm here. My job is to facilitate, be aggressive at the same time, be a threat always when I get the ball."

Lue said seeing Rose's passing ability up close has impressed him so much that he went back to study clips from the 28-year-old's career on Synergy, a video analytics service popular among NBA and NCAA coaches, to see just what type of passes he can expect Rose to make in the Cavs' offense.

"More than anything, he's just playing free and he looks good," said Kevin Love, who shares a trainer, Rob McClanaghan, with Rose. "He's not carrying any weight in any way, whether it's physically or on his shoulders, any burden in that respect. I think for him that's huge. Coming out here and having a lot of fun playing basketball, and you can see that, especially when we go 5-on-5 or we're just out there playing our sets."
Haven't been a Rose fan over the years, don't think he's anywhere close to being as good as Kyrie, but I have higher hopes for him this year than I do for Wade. I think Wade is shot athletically but Rose is young enough and has enough physically that if his knees are OK and his attitude is good we can realistically hope for a solid starter with flashes of all-star form at times.

Watching some of his passing highlights, three things stood out to me:

1. He's very good in transition, both running the break and looking to get out quickly.
2. He got Pau Gasol SO MANY OPEN 20-footers just running that pick and pop. Should be refreshing to see him get Love a bunch of open three pointers.
3. He is capable of making the cross-court pass Kyrie never seemed to attempt.
