The active roster for tonight hasn't been made official yet, nor has the signing been made official in terms of an official announcement from the Cavs. But if Smith is going to play tonight vs. the Bucks, they better hurry up with the signing/physical/etc.

One newspaper report (in a post above) said Smith was expected to arrive Thursday. I will just hope that was wrong.

I would like to see Joe return at a home game, but would also like to see him at least suit up in Boston (in case of foul trouble or some desperate match-up problem). I could also see the Cavs waiting for Saturday vs. Miami, since it would be the 2nd game in a back-to-back for the team (Joe would give them some extra punch in that 2nd game), and Joe is 33 and hasn't played in a real game since February 10. I would just like Brown to have the option to use him vs. Boston even if he doesn't take advantage of it.

Thank you god for giving the Cavs an owner and GM with knowledge of the game and the will to spend money to win at all costs.

Our owner is the man and our GM keeps pulling things off.

Mo for Damon Jones lol.

No doubt, we have possibly the best owner and GM combo in the league but this move was literally a no brainer given our needs at this time. Especially in light of the advantageous avenue that was created by the Wallace injury for Fegan to satisfy two objectives in one shot with Joe and Andy. Pretty much a win win on all accounts.

Thanks for that info, wuck.

BTW, is it me, or is the smile the best part about having Joe back ...

yea, that one report seemed odd that he wouldn't arrive until thursday. I would like to see him play a few minutes tonight - it'll bring energy to the team and to the crowd for a game that might be harder to get up for than the games this weekend. It's not like he has to learn what to do out there, he played for us last year.

On the Les levine tv show last night, i know it sucks but its on at 11 and i was bored, terry pluto was on the show, and he said that joe wanted to go home grab some stuff to bring to CTown. Im guessing thats probably why he wouldnt be around to play today.

The Cavaliers agreed to terms with forward/center Joe Smith on Tuesday evening.

"Joe has made the decision to go to the Cavs once he clears waivers," agent Dan Fegan said from California.

After Smith was bought out of his contract on Sunday, teams were lining up for his services.

But the 6-foot-10, 225-pounder wanted to return to the Cavs. He'll likely play a key role off the bench behind starters Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Anderson Varejao.

The Cavs (47-12) needed another big man before forward/center Ben Wallace broke his leg. After that happened, finding another big became imperative.

Smith will sign a contract for the rest of the year after he clears waivers today.

Smith, 33, won't play against Milwaukee tonight, but is expected to be in uniform for the Boston game on Friday.

Smith averaged 6.6 points and 4.5 rebounds in 36 games with the Thunder this season. He appeared in 27 regular-season games for the Cavs last year.

The Cavs have almost $5 million remaining from their mid-level exception.

It proved to be a wise decision to hang on to it.

Do we really need Joe at home against the Bucks? Nope, so why all the kiddy before Christmas stuff? Let the man chill , get a practice in with his new team and be a full go away against Boston Friday.

Officially signed, with some quotes from Cavs players...

Cavs, Smith agree to deal

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Cavaliers agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Joe Smith, bringing the veteran forward back for another NBA title run.

Smith cleared waivers on Wednesday and must pass a physical before he can sign with the Cavaliers, who reluctantly traded him away last summer. Smith is not expected to be in uniform for Wednesday's game against the Milwaukee Bucks but should be ready for Cleveland's game in Boston on Friday.

Smith bought out his contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder for a chance to rejoin the Cavs (47-12), who have the Eastern Conference's best record. Smith averaged 6.6 points and 4.5 rebounds in 36 games for the Thunder.

The 6-foot-10 Smith will help offset the loss of Ben Wallace, who is expected to miss at least three more weeks with a broken leg.

Smith played in 27 regular-season games and made 13 playoff appearances for the Cavaliers last season after he was acquired in a trade before the deadline. Cleveland dealt him in August in a three-way deal to get All-Star guard Mo Williams from Milwaukee.

Williams was Smith's teammate and neighbor when both played for the Bucks. Williams is looking forward to playing with his close friend again.

"He'll do what he's done his whole career, just be solid Joe," Williams said. "You know what you're going to get -- nothing more, nothing less. He's going to be solid every night, day in and day out. He's going to knock down the open shot, rebound and defend. His basketball IQ is at a high level. He's a true professional.

"He's a great pickup and will be a role model for our young guys," Williams said.

When Wallace comes back, Smith will give the Cavs more front-court depth and experience.

"It's a great thing for us," center Zydrunas Ilgauskas said. "It gives us another big into the rotation. It will cut down some minutes for me, which is good. It's hard to play high minutes at this point in the season. We'll have a big who can shoot, play good defense, a great teammate who knows the system. I expect him to fit right in."
