It just puts unfair expectations on the kid... If, as a Cav, Windler has a similar impact to last year's versions of Jared Dudley, Joe Harris or Bogdanovic then that will be an immense success at the 26th pick. And those are three players where I think the comparison fits.

The comparison was done to see if Windler could play SG, and it turns out he is allot more athletic than we thought.

I really like this pick. Joe Harris is a great comp because picks like this with little expectations come in and really surprise because its a shooters league and both Harris and Windler have sneaky athletic ability.

But Windler's shooting ability is incredible, really should have been drafted much higher if GM's paid attention to how pure shooters with decent athletic ability and length develop. Look at Steph, Harris, Klay, etc. Shooting is a skill that is needed and translates.

He has a much better shot at sg than pf. Much. He is just to slight to play pf on top of being short for the position. I don't see it at all. And frankly in my mind, he ight be the best sf we got, even over cedi.

Oh and Nance can play backup pf, or did you forget we had him? And if you go small ball, Cedi is the better pf than Windler.

I didn't forget Nance, I just remember how ugly it was to watch him and TT play together last year. Until Nance can expand his 3 point shot and defenses respect him out there, he isn't really playable at PF with our current depth of bigs. Hopefully he is working hard on that part of his game this offseason or we find a stretch 5 to round out the rotations.

For Windler, I think you are probably right that his spot is SF but to break into the rotation with the current make up of the roster, I'm not sure there will be minutes at SG or SF. We have alot of guards and I expect that during the first half of the season we might see alot of 3 guard lineups until we can trade some of the vets.

Right - and that's my point. The basic athleticism numbers are not necessarily all you need to know about his ability to pay shooting guard. Sure, Klay can play shooting guard, but he is an all-time talent.

I totally agree on shooting. The more of it the better. I am not dissing the pick and I really like the Windler section.

So in a few pages we’ve moved up from Korver comparisons to Klay Thompson comparisons with some Harden mixed in. Reasonable.

When you’re looking at comps for mid-major guys picked in the 20’s it always makes sense to start with Hall of Famers.

Let me start here...

Even going back to early career Klay...

Is Windler as physical as Klay? Does he move around off screens as much as Klay? Does he play defense as well as Klay?

I’m not even claiming it isn’t going to be part of his game. FFS maybe it will one day. But the highlights I see show me a guy that has taken a few stepback shots, a handful of two dribble and launch shots and one cut and launch shots. Does Klay do these things too? Sure. But he does this in massive volume and he’s consistent to a level that nobody ever has been before and he does it while mixing in mid-range shots too and playing tremendous defense on the league’s top offensive players.

Why is Klay’s name even being used?

Not to mention some of the other ridiculous names being floated.

I get that people are excited about Windler and think he can become a good defender... but that will take a tremendous leap. He posted a +1.4 DBPM this season with strong rebounding numbers. The problem is that stat means, including all of his rebounds, he was still a pretty negative defender.

He's not quick and did most of his scoring off of cuts and fast shots. His quick release will help him continue to take advantage of the latter, but I am not certain he will be as deadly off cuts in the NBA.

Windler needs to add 5-10 pounds of muscle and become a true forward. Otherwise, I do not believe his strengths will translate. They are only unique if he is playing as a forward.

Still, he's such a great shooter that it is a no-brainer pick in the late 20s. I'm really happy with the choice and he has a lot of potential to become a game-changer for a good team just because of his shooting.

To be fair, he showed more than a 1.4 DBPM in his first 3 years at Belmont with 2.2, 3.6, and 3.2. So, the potential is there. Who knows why the number slipped his senior year. More offensive responsibilities? New defensive responsibilities? A statistical anomaly?

Man this kid is a freak,,,
We know Garland is a Lillard clone and Porter is a JR clone...but I've never seen anything like this dude.
Watch his video against Maryland..dude is hitting step back 3's with guys in his face and it doesn't faze him.
Has a great nose for the ball averaging 10 rebounds. I think I am most excited to see where his potential takes him...Damn I can't
wait for summer league.

I think people are still selling Windler short physically, but are too optimistic about his offensive skill level. He led his conference and ranked 10th in the NCAA in rebounds last year, which is a remarkable accomplishment for a wing...he's actually a much bigger outlier as a rebounder than he is as a shooter, and that's been a consistent strength his whole college career.

His offense, on the other hand, is still a little bit of an unknown quantity. Before last season, no one would've described him as an elite 3-point shooting prospect. You're betting that he's the high-volume ~43% from 3, ~85% from the line guy he was his senior year, not the medium/low volume ~40% from 3, 70% from the line guy he was his first three years.

Athletically and stat they are similar. No, we haven't scene Windler play defense like Klay or post up like Klay. Yes he is physical, better rebounder and 100% can come off screens like Klay...in fact coming off screens is one of his specialties.

The comparison on my part atleast was done to see if he could play SG, so I looked into his agility and strength numbers. As we know defense is more than just size and athletic ability, its a mind set. Not saying Windler cant defend, but his college tape doesn't show defense, but it shows elite rebounding for his size and position. He average over 10 rebs a game even though he shot over 7 3-pointers a game and played wing.

The shooting should translate for sure, rebounding actually usually translates, but mid major competition, grain of salt. Defense? Who knows, but he does have length, agility and strength to be able too, but he hasn't shown it one way or the other, he was never really asked to defend.

Aside from the maturity concerns Porter has a very different game then JR. Despite his tantalizing offensive potential he has potential to be a shut down defender on defense. Porter was nasty as a man to man defender in college just needs to work on his off ball defense. Completely overlooked part of KPJs game.

But this is a Windler thread. I see people comparing him to Klay and some other shooting guards. Windler is a SF. He averaged 20 and 10 in college hes 6-8 with length. Cavaliers have a backcourt of Sexton, Garland, Porter (Who will also play SF), Clarkson, Knight. He may get some minutes at SG but he's mainly going to be a SF for us.

Tristan might be buried at Center this year, rumors are Beilien really likes Henson. Zizic might be next, Tristan's lack of offense could burry him.
