Zeller will excel if paired with another big man who knows how to pass, because that takes advantage of his ability to cut, to find the open space, etc.. One of the big reasons the late 80's, early 90's Cavs were so effective was the interior passing of Daugherty, Nance, and Hot Rod, and while Zeller isn't as talented, he does have that basketball I.Q./passing ability.

I'd go so far as to say that the inability to use Zeller productively is probably a sign of other problems.

If we could find a way to put 20-25 lbs. on Zeller I would be happy with him as our starting center.

I think next year Zeller takes over for Thompson and we go big up front. Varejao can provide the defense. Hawes the three point range, and zeller can be the mid range shooting 4. Bennett can be the 4th big and cod move Into zeller's role if he improves. It will make sense we'll need a higher level shooter and defender at the 3. Ariza makes a lot of sense, especially if the cavs get kyle Anderson to back him up. There would be a variety of skill sets at every position.

I disagree. It's idiotic at this point of his career for Andy to be a starter and log heavy minutes.
And I'm probably Andy's biggest fan on the forum.

Let me posit that they won't be paying Hawes money and Varejao money and retaining Zeller and Bennett.

Really it's a matter of the first two. If Hawes and Varejao feel like getting multiple years, like 3 or more, they both won't be here.

The question I keep going over is whether or not you could contend with a starting front court of Bennett and Zeller. The only logical answer is TBD, but both move so well, and neither would hamper our offense, that it seems possible. I am tempted to recommend that we do not resign Hawes or Deng, but look to move Thompson plus additional assets for a defensive anchor at the 4 or 5. Would we be interested in taking on a knucklehead like Larry Sanders, and if so, what would it cost us?

If we end up drafting Embiid, Zeller will look awesome as our back up center. In hindsight, this is starting to look like a great pick. He also is able to run the floor, be a good cog in the offense, and spread the floor.

Both have good enough foot speed to play together too. Zeller can play the 4.

I think Zeller showed really good progress last year.

Bennett, Zeller, Embiid, TT, Andy is a great big man rotation. Tristan is expecting a big payday, so I'm not so sure if he'll be here next season, but just Bennett, Zeller, Embiid alone looks like a great lineup.

I loved watching Hawes play with Zeller. Great ball movement. And, I like Hawes' attitude. Unless we make some major moves to acquire veterans and lose some of our younger guys, we need a guy like him with some experience. All depends on what he wants to get paid, I suppose.

If we draft Embiid, I think Tyler will still get a ton of time at center. Embiid had foul problems at the college level. I think that will carry over into at least next year, in the NBA.
