Not as uncommon in Major League Baseball as you might expect.

The current apple of everyone's eye Craig Counsell, just as an example, had no coaching experience whatsoever when the Brewers hired him to be their manager in 2015.

AJ Hinch was hired by the Diamondbacks with zero coaching experience and he went on to win the World Series in 2017 with Houston.

Aaron Boone has racked up over 500 wins in New York and he came straight out of the television booth without ever having coached before.

The best manager in baseball, for my money, was hired with 0 managing experience and his only coaching experience was as an MLB bullpen coach.

As I mentioned elsewhere, there is a lot of overlap between those 2 positions.
