Lived in a different state for over a decade. I picked up the local MLS team and started rooting for them, but other than that I just root for Cleveland teams.

I guess a question for the locals is would you still support the cavs if they changed city/state. I would as I see myself as a cavs fan more than a Cleveland fan but I would much prefer they stay put as I love the home crowd in Cleveland (especially this season)
Cleveland had that happen when our beloved Browns were moved by 'he who shall not be named' to Baltimore. I'm not aware of any Cleveland fans that followed that team, although they won a Superbowl.

Still my saddest memory. Worse than the 1970 Cavs who only won 15 games.

The teams I follow in the 4 major sports aren't all of the same city (partly due to when and where I got into those sports).
When I moved to Cleveland it was my first time being in a sports town.

What I did was, still root for my teams, but I generally follow the local teams too. Luckily for me, my NBA team was already here but it was easy.
But I've found a particular attachment to the Browns (my favorite NFL team is in the NFC -- because I liked too many AFC teams at once). I love talking with Browns fans.

How would you have felt if they won and still had the Browns name? Each time the Ravens have been in the Superbowl I've actively rooted for them to lose.

Without question, it would’ve been even worse. The thing that made the Browns situation so bad is that they had a ton of fan support and had been competitive. It wasn’t a situation where they had to move because they sucked, no one came to games, or they sold the team.

I think most believed that the Browns would be back in Cleveland, whereas I can’t say the same about another team going back to St Louis, Oakland, or San Diego.

I would be more interested to know if Charlotte Hornets fans cheered for New Orleans, and if they did, did they go back to the Charlotte team when the Bobcats came back? Even further, were there fans that continued cheering for the Hornets in New Orleans, but only came back to the Charlotte NBA team once they got the Hornets name back?

I think I agree with you.

my cousin from Charlotte did that, but I don't think everyone else did. I remember asking him about that back around 07-08 when it was Lakers/Celtics in the Finals.

I have a primary residence in OH but I live and work various places, usually in the mountain west. The three Cleveland teams are my default and if they're not playing I pretty much lose interest in that sport until the Cleveland team starts back up the following year. If I rooted for the most local team closest to my work residences I'd have been bouncing between Denver, Seattle, Minnesota, or now Vegas. Fuck that.

With my Directv subscriptions I can still follow them wherever I am in the country. I've tried Bally sports when out of Ohio but that didn't work out worth a damn.
