I have a bit of a dilemma

Greetings. I'm having a bit of a dilemma. The story goes like this - I've been a Cavs fan for a decade now. Been watching the NBA for about two decades. When I was younger, I didn't really have a favorite team. I'm from Puerto Rico, don't have a local team.

When yours truly graduated from high school, I started following the NBA more. That was in 2011. Was starting to look for a team to follow. The Cavs were in the middle of a rebuild, having drafted Kyrie Irving. I thought to myself, the Cavs are an interesting team because they're young & could be the next OKC Thunder.

The dilemma steams from the fact that I might move to California soon. I'll finally have local teams. That said, the Cavs have such a nice team that it's making me overthink. I would in theory have many Cali teams to choose from.

What would you do in this situation? Part of me thinks it would be weird rooting for the Cavs while living in Cali. I'm considering staying put but want to know what you guys think.

If you're wondering, I would indeed consider the Sacramento Kings. As a matter of fact, they're the front runners, being the closest team to where I might re-locate. Don't worry, the Warriors are not on the radar. As for Baseball, I like the A's.

Location is Salinas, California.

It's not really location now is it? I'm Hungarian, was living in China when I started following the NBA and the Cavs as a teenager, now back in Hungary.

But if your passionate about a team or a player or a city, doesn't matter where you are. Especially in this age, when everything is televized and on social media. Communities are online like here on RCF. Locations don't really matter anymore, unless you absolutely want the thrill of the arena or sports bars etc.

Do what makes you feel good and gives you sparks, there is no logic in this.

Right.

I’d have given up half of my left testicle to be happy to root for a dominant Tom Brady instead of hoping Johnny Manziel would work out, but here we are.

The worst part might be the time zone issues. Depending on what you do for work, games starting at 4:00 may be hard to follow.

Personally, there’s zero chance I could ever change up teams.

Half a testacle?

Quit listening to these homers- you buy a Lakers jersey within 127 minutes of your plane touching down and don't look back. Kobe is your new GOAT. 2020 wasn't a fraud title in any way and is fully legit. Giannis wants to come there. The ghost of Jack Nicholson is gonna bring back the titles. It wasn't the team that sucked, it was that awful head coach that just couldn't figure it out. Phil is gonna fix everything. Good luck!

If you’ve got a local team you should adopt them as secondary so you can go to live games and gossip at work about them. It’s not like the Cavs will be playing Sacramento in the Finals any time soon, so you don’t have to choose.

If you have kids you want a local team so they can go to games. My kid has still not forgiven me for taking him to a Wizards-Cavs game and rooting for the Cavs though, so watch out

How was 2020 a fraud title? Seems perfectly genuine to me.

Favorite team is not a conscious choice…just root for whoever you want in the moment you aren’t getting married

Probably the only Cali team I could really follow in addition to the Cavs would be the Kings, simply for the fact if you have no real affiliation to the team it’s generally more interesting to watch how a young team develops throughout the season. About the only time I’d have interest in watching LAC, LAL, or GSW is the playoffs. I think any of those teams would be pretty hard to watch during the regular season.

Plus, I’d have to imagine most Kings fans you’d meet in Cali have either A) been Kings fans for a very long time or B) are basketball fans in general. They have to be one or the other with how bad the Kings have been. I’m guessing their fan base is somewhat similar to the Cavs.

Ive lived in a few different cities, tried adopting new teams etc

It just doesn't feel the same. There's no connection like the team you've always followed
That's an important factor. I don't think I'll ever feel a connection with another team like I do with the Cavs. As another poster mentioned, in this day & age of technology this type of stuff shouldn't be a big deal.

Thanks for the input y'all. I'm staying with the Cavs.

@JJ_PR You have to be a Cleveland fan at least until Koby wins a championship as GM/President :)

I was born and raised in Southern California where everyone are LA Laker fans. I grew up with Magic, Kobe, and Shaq and they always win and was surrounded by Laker fans. I was influenced from my father and grandfather and I loved Mark Price. I moved out of state and out of country and I’m still a Cleveland Cavalier fan.

All those years not winning and finally winning a championship was priceless and satisfying. The next one is I would like to see our team win without Lebron of a great team culture.
