Izzo tells AP: Still no decision on Cavs job

<!--subtitle--><!--byline-->By LARRY LAGE AP Sports Writer

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo writes in a text message to The Associated Press that he still hasn't made a decision about coaching the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Izzo's text message was received late Friday morning.

The longtime Spartans' coach flew to Cleveland on Thursday and visited with members of the Cavs' front office and coaching staff. He returned to Lansing, Mich. late Thursday night.

Izzo potentially could make $6 million a season and have a chance to coach LeBron James. The Cavs fired coach Mike Brown last month after losing in the second round of the NBA playoffs

Timing just doesn't seem right. Gilbert is in Boston right now. Do you think he would of really left if he knew Izzo was deciding today?

It is called slight of hand, besides he can be back to Cleveland in 45 minutes. Maybe he wanted Chowder for lunch?

here's to a better thread than last.

I think him canceling golf is decently important. Either he is still torn and needs to spend time with his family (maybe his MSU bball circle) to really think about this offer or he's decided and would rather tell msu w/ a presser then playing golf and it leaking out that way.

Im not going to lie, I'm excited. I think Izzo will be great here. Im not one to jump on any wagons and my views towards Cleveland sports tend to run more on the pessimistic side but, I think this is going to be a great hire.

Izzo making the turn?

As trepidatious as I am about Izzo, I'm fairly confident he'll be a better coach than Mike Brown. I just hope the players (LeBron) can make the adjustment from running the show under Brown, to having a real coach under Izzo.

I can't expect that he'd call for a presser without making up his mind. These AP reports of his text saying he's unsure are just a stall now. He's either movin' on up to the East Side to a deluxe apartment in the 216 (doesn't rhyme, but is accurate) or he's going to make a bunch of MSU fans feel like their rally did the trick.

I think it would be really awkward for him to go golfing with his MSU colleagues considering he just spent almost 9 hours in Cleveland. The Cavs job would be the elephant in the room, err, field that none of them could ignore. So it makes sense to cancel golf regardless of whether or not he has made a decision.

I think one reason we're moving forward right now on this coaching thing, one of the reasons that we are going to have a coach in place likely by Monday, is because the Cavs are prepared to get even more drastic and completely overhaul the roster.

Aside from maybe 3 or 4 guys(hopefully LeBron is one of those 3 or 4), we're going to have a completely brand new team next season, at least that's what I see happening.

The initial story that started this whole thing in the last thread said that Izzo was going to accept but was going to put off the official announcement until Friday. Then the shit hit the fan with WFNY getting blasted but sticking by its story, etc. It is possible that all the rumor-mongering and denials the last 48 hours have been just Kabuki theater completely consistent with the initial report from WFNY.

Can't see Scott as an assistant. I'm sure Gilbert has thought about it and is throwing money at him to take a head assistant job, but Scott is a proud guy and won't want to be in Izzo's shadow.

I expect some former MSU's as assistants. Snow will jump at it.

^ Nah...don't believe it (#12). Just off short-term memory, that guy has been denying that he'd leave for a few days.

Good point. I guess we all have to wait for the official announcement until we know for sure if there will be a press conference.
