J.J. Hickson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
W&G knows Hickson better than anyone and he sees him as a disappointment, primarily from the neck up.

That says it all about Hickson.

Right now he has the golden opportunity to shine, and what is he giving back? The occasional garbage put-backs, the occasional blind side block, and the ability to throw down wide open dunks. Just about any power forward on any roster in the NBA can show as much or more than what JJ has shown in his current situation.

If he was solid at boxing out for rebounds (he's not) or playing defense (he's not) or knocking down a face-up jumper (he's not) then maybe we could talk about his potential to be something more than an average player someday.

Judging from what I see in him right now I think he'll have to work a lot harder, and get a lot smarter before he can even call himself "average" at his position. And that's his ceiling.

If anyone wants to claim JJ has so much "upside potential"...well you can say that about a lot of players. I can claim that Troy Murphy is going to be the next Larry Bird, for example (not that I believe it for a second).

Trade him, please.

Hopefully JJ was showing off today for his new team. And Jamison was showing off for his.

Well....at this point, if it takes Z plus JJ to get Jamison, I'm definitely getting Blatche in return. Would love to pry away Butler as well....but that would probably take West and/or Wally S&T.....still not sure where management stands on West either.

I'm not buying into that "he's talented just give him time" stuff. What did he show to prove that he's talented? Footwork? Defense? Bball IQ? Fundamentals?

Nothing...

He can't even convert some opportunities that almost all other PF's in the league would fest on since he has hooves instead of hands.

If the ability to finish wide open dunks which are spoonfed to you by the MVP of the league gets you a starting spot, I'm pretty sure I can start at PF for the Cavs as I can actually catch the ball.

I hope we trade his ass for Jamison and get Blatche in the process. I won't be too disappointed if Blatche is not included too.

JJ has mastered the fine art of Potential. Can we trade him for that Ginger in Houston?

I'm sorry but at this point, if Washington wants Z and JJ for Jamison I take that deal in a second.

Z would be coming back and JJ is looking like a career Drew Gooden to me...

Did you watch the game tonight?

Tonight might have been one of the better games J.J. has played this year. He displayed his footwork and fundamentals on both ends of the floor, and really only dropped one pass(the Shaq pass was Shaq's fault, not J.J.)

You guys really suck at timing your bitching about Hickson.

I did watch the game and I agree that he played better. The up and under on Jamison was impressive. However...

The game was against the Wizturds and Jamison was straight up chilling on defense. If JJ keeps showing signs we'll talk about this in a different way.

Until then, he's a more atletic Drew Gooden to me, whom I want no part of.

By the way, not everyone gets spoon fed by LeBron... JJ should learn to catch every kind of pass to be succesful in the league. Did you see the passes Andy got and converted tonight? Shaq's pass wasn't perfect at all but it's still JJ's hands.

Shaq's "nifty" passes ricochet off of everyone except LeBron and LeBron's a freak.

Shaq's a good passes, but we're expecting him to be Magic Johnson when really he just gets the ball to the right place when theres a lane available. We need to make better passing lanes for Shaq to operate with.

J.J. has shown signs on and off all year. He's shown that drive from 20 feet out for the lay-up multiple times, kind of playing as a small forward. He's still not quite bulked up enough(needs 12-15 more lbs) to seriously battle in the post. Although those two plays, the up and under and the spin move from the FT line , were encouraging to see good footwork and timing in the post.

However, he was really good defensively tonight. I counted one missed assignment(3rd Q, Jamison got an easy lay-up). He blew up the pick and roll multiple times.

Basically, I've seen him gradually improve all of his mistakes except for his hands, however I think that's going to take some off-season training to take care of it it can be taken care of.

He's becoming a much more solid defensive player, and he's putting himself in the right spots more often. See, he's putting himself in the same spots AV does defensively more consistently now. Except Andy usually forces a miss, J.J. just swats that shit away so it looks different but really he's doing a lot of the same good movements that Varejao has been doing.

Now, mind you this has only been for about a week. He needs to continue to do it and hopefully at a faster pace. I still contend he can't be judged fairly until next season. I would like to see him be more consistent in what he does, and I'd like to see progression. I have seen some progression, Drew Gooden never showed that kind of progression ever. He was who he was and that's who he was is and always will be. J.J. has grown considerably, although he still leaves a lot to be desired at times.

I really wish J.J. would develop a knock-down 15-18 footer. That would help the team, and it would give him a real fallback option when he's turning the ball over and getting crowded inside. Now, it'll take time for him to develop that shot, however he does show good touch and good form, but inconsistent form at the same time with inconsistent release points and inconsistent balance(lot of the same problems LeBron had when he came into the league on his jumper).

To sum it up, the J.J. I saw against Charlotte and tonight(and even in the second half of the New Jersey game)..

J.J. the week and a half before that?

We need a level of consistency if he ever truly hopes to make real gains as a player. Hopefully he can find that or we trade him before it becomes apparent that he will never find that, but only for proper value.

Although anyone saying right now with certainty he will never find that is talking out of their ass and is more impatient than MB is with young players. Probably the same people calling for Gibson to quit playing in the NBA last year.

On that note..I need sleep.

Drew Gooden was never a consistent performer but we all know that his midrange jumper was money and he had a quite good baby hook. He was also a very good rebounder especially on the offensive end.

The thing that's bothering me is JJ's effort and attitude. As Wine and Gold said earlier, he just doesn't look like he wants to be there. He still looks timid and nervous.

Look, being able to start as an unproven 2nd year player on a championship caliber team which also has a 6th man of year caliber PF in the squad, is a very big opportunity. You'd expect that he would try to make the most of it. But he just isn't trying at the moment.

Defense and rebounding are mainly effort and hustle. Why do we label Andy as a very good defensive player and a good rebounder? Why does he lead the team in rebounds although he's not starting? Because he puts in everything he has, his body, his will, everything. And this is a man who just got a 6 year - 7 figure worth contract. He could just chill for 6 years.

It's not coincidence that almost everyone here knocks on JJ's defense and rebounding. It is evident that his lack of effort is leading us to that conclusion. With that athleticism, he should be a nightmare for opposition's PF but he gets burned on drives, he doesn't close out on shooters, in short, everyone has a field-day on him. (Other than Boris Diaw who really sucks :chuckles: )

JJ is not hustling at all at the moment. I want to see him hustle. We all want to see him hustle, we want him to contest shots, dive to loose balls, get floor burns and earn every minute that are just handed out to him without question.

Edit: I'm too sleepy to fix every spelling-grammar error...Just live with them :chuckles:

Right now I don't wanna see JJ in the Cavs' rotation, not this year. I'd be fine with shipping him out if we're getting something valuable, but it would be interesting to see how he could develop with a full off-season of weight-training and working on his game.

Anyone else notice that we made a concerted, deliberate effort to get JJ a shot on the first possession of the game last night? :chuckles:

I think the writing is on the wall, folks.

So essentially, he is reaching the pinnacle of a washed up Ben Wallace who couldn't shoot, yet still was given the priviliedge to start games with some offense. Thinking of this team starting Hickson in the playoffs enduces vomit.
