Jim O'Neil is Frisco's Problem at DC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Browns New Coordinators

Well considering he's not going to be the head coach, how much control was he really asking for? And yes Houston had a very bad year, but it wasn't Kubiak's fault that Schaub went on a stretch where he threw more touchdowns to the opposing defenses than to his own team. Kubiak is an excellent play-caller!

Re: Browns New Coordinators

He coached the worse team in the league last season so we should give him all the control he wants right?

He coached a playoff team the previous two seasons before that, he'd be an excellent candidate to run the offense. Given that there is nobody else currently under contract in this organization with any offensive experience, I'd be more than happy to hand him the reigns of the scheme.

So is a playoff caliber Baltimore team. Not like I'm alone here.

But let's all use the last season as the barometer for how competent someone is, then put our faith in the Browns front office....Makes sense.

Re: Browns New Coordinators

Not sure what pseudo-head coach means. If he wanted a lot more control than an OC should have than yes the Browns should walk away from him. It may be a situation where he really doesn't want to come to Cleveland but will do so if he gets an absurd amount of power/money/title etc. Where as, he really wants to go to Baltimore and he will take the normal role of OC.

Anyone asking for too much power in that situation and actually getting it is a recipe for disaster.

Re: Browns New Coordinators

Plenty of teams around the league have assistant head coach titles, I don't believe this would have been anything groundbreaking.

And he deserves it because? This isn't 2011, time changes and people change. Kubiak couldn't get his players to play for him and got canned prior to the end of the season. Not sure how the Browns not dropping their panties for him equates to the Browns being stupid, but I'm not always looking for a reason to call them stupid, either.

The point I'm trying to make is why should we give him more power than being an OC? We need an OC not a guy who wants to come in and be more than that.

Re: Browns New Coordinators

Rappaports tweet continued to say that Kubiak wanted a Co-HC title however in the retweet Ruiter cut it off....

Who in the ever-loving fuck would allow that (besides b00bie, apparently)? Looks like he was trying to strong arm the Browns and assert his dominance. You do not concede to garbage like that.

Is he a good coordinator? Sure, we'd be lucky to have him. But nobody is exclusive enough to undermine a head coach like that.

I don't need to search hard for reasons the front office has seemed in over their head or disgraced by a seemingly meddlesome owner.

It's not 2013 anymore either, last season is over with and Gary Kubiak still knows how to coach no matter how lost his team was last season both due to injuries and lack of a quarterback.

I'm not burning down Berea because Kubiak isn't coming to the Browns, he's certainly smart enough to seek out better teams like the Ravens to work for. I'm sure he'll do well there.

Quite frankly, I think it's a pretty smart play to bring in a coach with previous head coaching experience considering the current head coach has none.

Giving him an AHC title is not at all monumentally out of line given his resume as a play-caller. It doesn't have to be the over-dramatic power struggle some are making it out to be.

And yet, you were on board with the Chud firing. My head is spinning.

You've been spinning quite a bit lately, so I'm not terribly surprised. :chuckles:

Dowell Loggains was born in 1980. Let that sink in.

Re: Browns New Coordinators

In other news...

The Browns were given permission to interview a coordinator. The coordinator? You guessed it...

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>The <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Browns&amp;src=hash">#Browns</a> have received permission to interview <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Bills&amp;src=hash">#Bills</a> LB coach Jim O’Neil for the DC job. It’s a formality</p>&mdash; Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapSheet/statuses/427841052972941312">January 27, 2014</a></blockquote>

A lot of times those assistant head coach positions are created out of thin air so teams could actually interview a candidate. For example, Mike Lombardi's role was Personel director when he was hired. Shortly thereafter he was given the title of GM so another title of Assistant GM could be created. Why is this important? Ray Farmer had a job with the KC Chiefs and would not be allowed to interview with the Browns unless there was a step up in job title which Assistant GM would have been.

That's why you see guys with this bogus a Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator title because they couldn't go from OC of X team to OC of Y team.

Honestly, I think you're right and I do think he'd do fine in Baltimore. Here's the difference: sound structure that has been in place for a long time.

First, Harbaugh has nothing to do with the Kubiak interviews:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Report: Harbaugh a &quot;non-factor&quot; in bringing Kubiak aboard, with owner and G.M. paving the way for move <a href="http://t.co/PyMSDJTfTD">http://t.co/PyMSDJTfTD</a></p>&mdash; ProFootballTalk (@ProFootballTalk) <a href="https://twitter.com/ProFootballTalk/statuses/427836581765218304">January 27, 2014</a></blockquote>

So, Kubiak coming to the Browns and basically asking to have as much influence as the head coach you just hired just doesn't pass the smell test. Ya, it'd be great to have a guy here with head coaching experience to give a hand. Question is, is that how he sees his place here? Is his intent to help or to be heard?

I honestly don't think a guy with a big head is a good fit here right now (yes, a guy who wants to call plays and be a co-head coach is big headed). The head coach must cement his place atop the coaching tree, like Harbaugh had the opportunity to do in Baltimore. Kubiak trying to steal the show stunts that process immensely for the Browns. Personally, I don't care how attractive Kubiak's name is to "people around the league" because it's Pettine's job to absorb power from the front office by winning, not his time to worry about stepping on Mr. 2-14's toes.
