Jim Schwartz: 2023 NFL Asst. COY

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I like the hire.

Any of Fangio, Flores, Desai, Schwartz was fine by me.

If I'm a betting man, I'd put down money on the Browns to snag Da'Ron Payne on the first day of free agency. Berry operates by asking his coaches what they need on the roster to achieve their goals, then addresses those immediate needs in free agency.

Year one, we didn't have the tight ends to run Stefanski's offense, so he got Hooper immediately.

Year two, the biggest need on defense was safety and he got JJ3 to address that request.

For Schwartz, DT is the most glaring need, and I expect us to spend to fill it.

In the draft, a day three target I would love to bring in is Derick Hall out of Auburn. A lot of places have him pegged as a 3-4 hybrid edge rusher, but in a wide 9, I think he'd be a terrific pass rushing weapon on the outside. If you can snag a Lukas Van Ness to be your starting DE that shifts inside on third down, Hall would be a sexy speed rusher coming from the outside with a great angle to work opposing tackles.
You're making me excited over here...

It's our MO so far.

We draft to fill everything on the roster. But if the drafting fails and there's a glaring need, we go out and sign a premium guy to fill that hole.

Others in here mentioned Fletcher Cox. I'd love to get him. He's one of my all-time favorite defensive linemen. I just don't see him leaving Philly, and I also think he's a bit past his "best by" date.

(As an aside, boy have Philly fans been spoiled with Cox in the middle of their defense and Kelce in the middle of their offense. Those are arguably the best center and nose tackle of the past decade)

Javon Hargrave

Schwartz nukes my Zach Allen dream. Cannot play wide 9 DE.

Edit- to show my ignorance, Allen would actually be really solid. He could get away with 4i, 4, 5 tech opposite Myles.

I'm not as well versed on the Schwartz Wide 9 as I'd like.

The second DT--is it possible they line up more as like a 4i? If so, Allen would be able to fill that role, right?

I don't think the Browns even look his way in free agency. I don't think it's a premium need, and we won't spend money when we drafted the solution and have him in house (Winfrey)--but I guess it's still possible. Don't lose faith yet! Hold on for another half a year!

How does a Wide 9 help Myles? What will it do for our corners? Whats the number of each positional group on the field?

Worth pointing out that the top DC candidates were all interested in the Browns.

That’s not something I don’t want to take for granted or stick my head in the sand on with the current regime.

Hasn't their run defense been the weakest link on their team this year?
I think you have to elaborate on what you're trying to get at.

It feels like you're trying to make the claim that Javon Hargrave isn't able to fill his role in run fits.

I don't think anyone in the NFL would agree that's the case.

When Davis went out, definitely.

Nothing on Hargrave, he's been the best NT in the NFL for the past...idk, 5 years? 7 years?

By lining up out wide, the edge has a more direct angle to attack the opposing tackle.

Typically it benefits speed guys (and Myles has speed) but it also opens up the inside of the tackle more, so you can hit him with power and beat him inside.

It's just about angles and positioning.

"Wide 9" has nothing to do with the second and third levels of the defense. It probably means that linebackers have more 2-gap stack and shed responsibility in run fits, but it doesn't mean anything to safeties or corners.

4 down linemen, 3 linebackers at most, just like "4-3" defenses. Nickel, which is base, is 4-2-5. Dime is 4-1-6.

I'm not claiming anything. I just remember their run defense was the only real problem on their team this year weather it was due to injuries, coaching, or the players. That's why they brought in Suh.
