Jim Schwartz: 2023 NFL Asst. COY

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I swear I saw the browns were 9th in stopping 3rd downs last season. I know this isn't the same metric but I wonder which is more relevant
vs. expected provides a clearer view on whether or not a defense is actually doing something to force the stop instead of situation.

Like, if I stop LeBron from scoring 3x, it counts as three stops. But when the context shows that he was shooting 90 feet away from the basket, then the expectation is that they ~should~ be stops. It's not as impressive as me stopping him underneath the basket 3x.

If his strategy is to get to third and long, shouldn't he get credit for getting to that position in the first place

Well.. vs. expected should show that Woods is perhaps underwhelming in getting stops when he SHOULD get stops, like 3rd and long. So there's really no point in getting to 3rd and long if he can't stop it.

I don't know if "9th in 3rd down stops" accounts for things like penalties. The offense getting an illegal formation penalty to force a third and long doesn't necessarily mean the defense did anything.

Also, a team can have more total 3rd down stops than another and it only means they aren't getting as much turnovers. Teams forcing fumbles and interceptions on first and 2nd down will have a less total 3rd downs overall. But I don't know if "9th in 3rd down stops" is referring to a total or something else.

Yes.

I didn't have a problem with the philosophy of Joe Woods, especially on the first two downs.

The way he executed on third was wholly unacceptable.

The point of the defense was to get the offense into third down. The goal on third down is to go get the ball back. He just gave the QB the same look repeatedly.

This changed later in the year, but my mind was already made up by then.

I enjoyed watching Ward, Emerson and Newsome play in man coverage.

Delpit on the back end?

JOK in coverage, moving all around.

If they can find some pluggers in the middle, maybe another LB if they don’t think internal solutions like Walker or Taki will be enough.

Schematically they have enough to compete.

Didn’t JOK suck in coverage last year? I remember him getting burnt a lot. Granted that could have been coaching and scheme but he didn’t look good.

Before people convince themselves Schwartz is a man defense coach or a guy who brings in the single high free safety, the past season and a half resulted in a lot of new growth in Schwartz.

One year under Mike Vrabel with the Titans introduced a lot more split safety looks. He was also obviously exposed to more lighter front seven packages and zone schemes.

Excited to see Schwartz's influence on the line of scrimmage moreso than the defensive backfield. That's really why he got the job.

I almost wonder if he has a name in mind for a passing game coordinator that is totally unconnected to what he did in the past.

That said, I do think he will be more multiple in the secondary and, for lack of a better way to put it, let them cook. He's the mad scientist who will cook up some crazy ass fronts for QBs and OL's to have to deal with.

There’s no way he could’ve sucked in coverage. He was a generational talent coming out and is already being fitted for his gold jacket. Get out of here with that nonsense

I'll back the hiring, but only bc it gives an excuse to use Spaceballs gifs.
