Yea Jason Lloyd has been saying Mitchell is gone for a while but he has always said it's what he is hearing from his sources and through the grapevine of what Mitchell's people are saying. From the show he never seems to be pushing it but just putting it out there. He knows he gets push back from it.
Your info may be a bit outdated, because Lloyd hasn't said this in several months. In fact since the beginning of the year, Lloyd has said repeatedly that he thinks Donovan will sign a max extension with the Cavs this summer, but he may not stay the entire length of the extension.

But that's a far cry from "Mitchell is gone".

Dude gets his ass saved so many times by our top talented players...if Mobley wasn't the best defender on the planet and Mitchell didn't will the win....they can't even really care what he says any more can they?

Has it really been that long? I do remember when Dan Gilbert said that Mitchell would sign an extension that Mitchell said something that put it into question again. I know they have speculated about Mitchell resigning because there aren't really any of his preferred options open now. I only listen to Lloyd on UCSS and don't read his stuff in the athletic.

I don't really take notes of a lot of the Mitchell stuff mentally because I don't really care either way with it so that might be what happened. I think JBB and roster construction is a big problem for this team going forward. I'll admit I've kind of semi checked out mentally with them because of the lack of expectations I have for the current team. The excitement of this team was pretty much be ruined for me when they brought back JBB after the Knicks playoff series.

The problems with Garland and what we do with Mobley/Allen has kind of drawn me back in a little but I've always like roster construction and development more than anything else about the game. I think we have hit a wall with the ceiling with JBB. Also I think the ceiling is being limited by Koby too, he just doesn't seem to have the proper vision for the team.

Yup, it's been since the January win streak that Lloyd changed his tune. But he admits it wasn't due to the win streak at all, it's just Lloyd started looking deeper into the contract stuff, and figured it makes too much sense for Mitchell to lock in the max money (Cavs can pay more than any other team), and have the possibility of requesting a trade later if need be.

I also think that Mitchell will re-sign with the Cavs, especially because Donovan hasn't been at 100% health, and as of right now any preferred/contending team he'd be looking at in free agency doesn't have cap space.

To your point, outside of the Mitchell stuff, the front office has a lot of decisions to make this summer, starting with the coach, and then going down the rest of the roster. But I am certain that as of now, the front office is determined to build around Donovan Mitchell.

I think Mitchell was always going to extend his contract, that's where the money part makes the difference. The question was if he was going to use the extension to force a trade. The Cavs weren't going to move forward with Mitchell on the last guaranteed year of his contract. Mitchell could extend his contract with the Cavs or get traded then extend with the new team.

I don't think it's the cap space of other teams that Mitchell is looking at when looking for his next team. He is looking to see if he fits somewhere and if they have the assets to get him. If he asks for a trade, there is no guarantee that highest bid is a team he wants to go to, that's what happened when he was traded to the Cavs. Being willing to extend with one of his preferred team would most likely up the bid but each of those teams have a max that they can offer. I just think his preferred destinations best packages that they can offer aren't going to out bid the rest of the market.

He can extend then be traded 6 months later. That happened with Blake Griffin but not by choice. Extending then forcing a trade is basically how most stars now operate.

Unless Cavs go on to the conference finals, Coach JBB needs to go.

Man people really do have short memories here, one win against an awful Orlando team at home and suddenly he’s a good coach…? We got hella lucky Orlando are an awful road team. They couldn’t shoot for shit the second half.

JB still has not won a road game in the play offs

His teams still struggle to hit 100 points in playoff games and that’s now over a very large sample size.

We could have won this series 4-1 / 4-2 even with the injuries. Orlando are really really bad. And we have Donovan Mitchell

The iso heavy offense is garbage, objectively. We also play so fucking slow it’s excruciating. Against a team that presses like Orlando does you need to push the pace get the ball up the floor quickly. Not take 8 seconds to get the ball over half court every fricken offense to then jack up a contested 3. How many times this series did Orlando steal the ball off a pick n roll attempt? Just shitty predictable baby simple offense

Go watch the western conference game, we would have gotten smoked by any team in the west 1 through 8 and it’s not even close, Knicks, healthy bucks, 76rs, Miami with a healthy Butler beat us also. We just got lucky we played a dog shit team led by a 22 year old
First of all, where are these people saying what you’re claiming? (And no, Pip’s mostly ;) enjoyable schtick/trolling does not count)

Second, who says ORL is a dogshit team. They were the 5 seed. We were the 4th seed. This wasn’t some juggernaut 1 or 2 seed playing a David that won in from the Play In bracket.

There are people so scared of JBB returning that they get all worked up by any nuanced discussion about coaching on a game by game basis as if an earned compliment or acknowledgement paid here or there on this board has any affect on what the Cavs briantrust will do. That is out of all of our hands

So 4 more wins is where you draw the line on stay or go ? In fact, unless you defeat the best team in the NBA (record wise) — this man has to go…. Even if he only gets 3 wins ?? BA—->BYE!

Yet if he wins 4 ? Okay he can stay…. :chuckle:

I can dig it..

JBB has defeated as many playoff opponents as Kevin Stefanski.

I‘d say JBB is a capable coach who has some limitations and is nowhere near the top of the coaching profession. I think classifying him as a “bad coach” is a bit silly. Beilein was a bad (NBA) coach. Average or Mediocre is fair.

If he was truly a bad coach players wouldn’t stand for it.

“Meh” would also be a fair rating imho.

But as you say what we fans think doesn’t really matter.

If he can lead this team to win against a great Boston team, then yeah, he can stay 1 more year. Highly unlikely though.

Do you think a different coach could get our current team past the Celtics?
That’s a fair question but certainly their are all sorts of big picture dynamics that point to JBB not being the guy long term or even right now for this team.

But I do agree that an absolutism for him or any coach that the only way they could return is by beating the 1st seed with the best record in the NBA is a bit much.

I still want a coaching change. But if they win 2 or 3 against BOS and make the losses close as well, don’t be certain or 100% certain that the owner will feel the same way.

That’s just something we don’t know and have zero affect on.
