Jose Calderon signs with Pistons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
He’s got a smooth J, brings the ball up the court, and never stops moving. Fun to watch.

This board should show him some respect. He’s been shat on since the day he signed. But he is a true professional and more than held his own out there. Even saw him frustrate Reggie Jackson on defense, for someone that is so abysmal on defense allegedly.

Perhaps he just had a fluky game but I don’t think so. He competed and earned some minutes going forward IMO. Was pleasantly surprised.

He's going to have games where he looks like crap again. But it's a guy we brought in to be 3rd PG.

And for what he does do well, I don't think his body is spent or useless. He's just been on a few awful teams the past two years and he;s not the type of player to transcend that.

But if you play him with talent or just players who play the right way, he can add value in most of the situations you'd normally call upon him for.

And tonight, he played with zest and must have had a mile wide smile to get to just have fun, make some plays on a really good team, and show that he still has a useful skillset

Swallowing my tongue.

Didn't know Calderon could play defense like that. I knew he had a jumper - that wasn't questionable. But the guy looked like a plus performer on the court. Played the game the right way and made us better.

Who'd have ever thunk it?

As a side note, watch his post-game interview and tell me you don't root for him or he isn't a good guy just doing his best to contribute:

We could do a lot worse...

I tried to tell people during the preseason on here to give Jose a chance. Everyone hated on him without any real arguments as to why they thought he was trash.

Glad to see him get some credit. He’s a veteran than can help the team in ways that a more self-oriented player like Rose simply can’t.

Business as usual.

With Wade and IT healthy he will get zero minutes, but proved he wasnt the worst signing afterall as a 3rd pg.

The shock to me is he is a better fit than Rose although not a better player. I thought Rose was going to be a better fit than he has been so far.

You are likely correct about that but with so many of those players being so likely to miss time during this season, he's a nice insurance policy to have.

And perhaps it becomes a bit more clear now why they signed him.

And I agree with you about the Rose comment.. I think between he and Rose, Calderon is more likely to play any minutes at all once everyone is healthy (if that ever really happens before the playoffs).

Rose will get minutes over Calderon, he was promised them. Maybe in an emergency in the playoffs it is different, but your rep around the league is important and Rose was promised minutes.

I could see Rose being part of a trade come trade deadline, filler to make salaries work.

I agree and it's why I edited my post after thinking about it.. but like you said, I could see the Cavs being able to justify trading Rose if Jose plays well a few more times like that.

Do we know rose was promised minutes? Or is that just speculative?

Either way Calderon will have a few games of starting till Shump gets back so we’ll have time to evaluate him over rose after that. But just from what I’ve seen of Calderon he’s already a better fit. Neither is good or reliable defensively but at least Calderon can shoot and when he misses he can get back into transition to play d unlike rose whos shots come almost entirely below the rim and needs to run the length of the floor to play d. We end up having to playing 4 on 5 in transition all the time with him. Which has been an issue for his teams his entire career.

Not sure about trading him tho. Who are we getting back for the vet min? Bogut? Tony Allen?
