Jose Calderon signs with Pistons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
6 points, 4 assists per 36 minutes! That is the worst offensive stats in the NBA as a PG. Throw in that he is one of the worst defenders in the league and then wonder how the f*ck does this guy get minutes even with all the injuries. Any D-League guy could do better.

Well there’s this thing called a cohesive offensive unit with these things called set plays that Calderon is good at setting up but may not show in the box score.

And your take on his defense is just wrong. Flat out. He’s been a plus defender this year. Even if overall he’s only average or slightly above, he has been far far far far better than “one of the worst in the league”.

He also provides floor spacing which is invaluable to LeBron especially and everyone else too. The threat of him possibly hitting an open three keeps a defender out of LeBrons way and completely changes the dynamic of the offense.

I really don’t see any reason to play Rose over Calderon with the starters going forward. And I love Derrick and was impressed with how hard he worked in the summer and training camp....but you can’t bang a square peg into a round hole every day and expect good results. Eventually one or the other has to give for it to work and Rose just seems like he’s almost incapable(not unwilling, just incapable) of winning.

Guess this shows why Koby Altman is running an NBA franchise, and we're just yahoos on a message board....

What makes it particularly funny is that he went out and grabbed Calderon at the beginning of free agency, which is precisely why we all mocked the move. He knew exactly why Calderon was valuable.

Heck, considering the general outrage at firing Griffin and replacing him with the "inexperienced" Altman, Calderon's performance is like a double bitch-slap.

Kind of nice to have a GM who clearly knows more than we do.

The funniest part about the Griff outrage people to me was this:

The same people that wanted to get out the pitchforks for firing Griff, were over in other threads claiming that the Cavs(Griff)messed up big time by trading for Kyle Korver instead of PJ Tucker..and that our no defense identity was our ultimate downfall.

Now the way it's playing out:

Altman has done a solid job as GM.

Griff made the right deal. (but was an asshole and shouldn't have been talking shit about his boss to other teams while he was still employed)

Altman did a hell of a job tweaking the roster and building a bench with minimum contracts and the taxpayer MLE.

Our collective and one-sided abhorrence for this trade at the beginning of free agency will forever go down in RCF-lore as the most fallacious error in judgement ever. This was our "Porzingis to the Knicks" on draft night moment.

I literally do not recall one member supporting this trade. That, in itself, is incredible.

Good on you, Jose.

Jose is certainly owed an apology from everyone (myself included) who were bitter that the Cavs decided to cut RJ over him.

Definite kudos to Altman as well for seeing something important in Calderon that the rest of us didn’t.

Get it done in the postseason not meaningless regular season games

Jose wants to be a champ, he has to go all out for them Spaniards

I defended the Calderon signing.

I was against signing him but I’m glad to be wrong. I had no idea he was capable of playing defense.

Tidbits from Lloyd on Calderon:

13. When Tyronn Lue inserted Jose Calderon into the starting lineup for good prior to a game at Detroit last month, he was asked how he settled on Calderon to replace Shumpert in the lineup.

14. “You see any other point guards around?” Lue cracked.

15. It’s fair to say Lue was hesitant to turn to Calderon simply by the fact he started Shumpert, a non-point guard, ahead of him once Rose went down. While it’s true the Cavs won four straight before Calderon entered the lineup, he has impressed over these last 12 starts.

16. The Cavs are 11-2 with Calderon in the starting lineup. He is still a liability defensively, but he has been steady over these last few weeks. He gets the Cavs into their sets, doesn’t turn the ball over and he can make open 3s. He has just nine turnovers in these last 12 games he has started, an astonishingly low figure.

17. Calderon scored 14 points and passed for four assists during his 26 minutes Tuesday. His time on the floor has steadily increased during this stretch, although his court time will likely soon end.

18. There won’t be room in the rotation for him once Thomas returns, but Calderon has done an admirable job filling in considering the rash of injuries the Cavs have had at the position.

19. “Just being able to knock down shots, being able to handle the basketball so we don’t have to have it in LeBron’s hands as much to wear him down,” Lue said of Calderon. “He’s a smart player, doesn’t make mistakes and very good shooter. Having a true point guard on the floor really helps us.”
