Josh Gordon discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Can I get a refresher on what his contract situation is right now if he were to be reinstated?

He has one more season under contract, and then he becomes a restricted free agent. So, two years of team control more than likely--large enough of a window to deal him in.

I really don't get the group think here. He's under team control for two more seasons. He's not going to destroy the locker room on this current team. The worst thing that can happen is he gets reinstated, he plays and he's not good. We could then trade him or just cut him. There's no harm in that at all. In fact it shouldn't be looked at any different than taking a flyer on any other risky player.

However. There is the chance (I will admit slim) that he's still good. He was still good in the limited action he saw last year. If he's still good then guess what? You just got one of the biggest steals in the league. Don't sit there and act like he wasn't a beast when he had his shit together. He was clearly our best offensive player in the time he played during last preseason. Is he probably rusty right now? maybe, but I l know for a fact that he's in tremendous shape and if he was reinstated and The Browns cut him, he would get picked up by another team in a heartbeat. He will get another shot in this league and it would be smart to take advantage of his remaining years on his deal.

+1. The browns have nothing to gain by cutting him.

I don't see many/any people on here advocating to cut him upon reinstatement.

I do see people intelligently not getting their hopes up for a guy who has consistently let us all down.

I would be thrilled if he returns to the team and puts up a monster year. But I'm sure as hell not banking on it. Nor am I particularly rooting for Josh Gordon the man to succeed. I would be happy that he benefits my football team, but the guy is a total scumbag.

I'm not talking about the substance abuse here. I'm specifically speaking to the trash/garbage emojis Snapchat story disrespecting the Browns gear he was given a few months ago.

I really wouldn't call it group think that none of us trust a guy Who was given a dozen chances who has pissed away almost every chance he has had in this league while acting like a petulant child through it all

I'd call it naive to think he's ever going to be a meaningful contributor that you can rely on again

+1. I wouldn't call it groupthink when I can call it by a more accurate name, common sense.

You're getting waaaay too much shit for what basically amounts to common sense. On both counts (Irving and Gordon).

I'm not even hoping for anything, but if he does play, he plays here. The Browns havent had a playmaker close to him since Braylon's fluke year. I guess if the Browns could draft at all and we had a couple of blue chip WRs who were primed to break out, I might listen to the 'trade him' crowd but I dont currently see anything close.

People act like this isnt Cleveland we're talking about. We cant afford to chase blue chip talent out of town because some fans got their feelings hurt. If he gets his shit together and Goodell has mercy on his soul, get him a helmet.

I drafted him late in a best-ball league...CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!

I'd love to say Gordon could walk on the field and produce due to his natural talent, but it's proven to be false. He literally torpedoed the Browns when he returned to the Hoyer-led team.

Right. Josh Gordon single handedly destroyed the Brian Hoyer led Browns

Gordon signed a 4-year contract that would put him into restricted free agency in year 5 after he was selected in the supplemental draft in 2012.

As of now, he's only played 3 of those years. So he has one more year at $1,068,406 left on his deal and then he goes into restricted free agency.

With that tiny of a cap hit, there's no real reason to release him.

IIRC one of those seasons didn't count because he was suspended for the last game (partying w/ Manziel) and didn't reach the game requirements for a "season" to tick off his contract. His agent appealed with the NFLPA but was denied.

I think he has two left.

This is from last summer discussing his contract prior to the 2016 season.

Per NBC Sports -

"Gordon arrived in round two of the 2012 supplemental draft, and he obtained accrued seasons toward free agency in 2012 and 2013. In 2014, however, a 10-game league-imposed suspension coupled with a one-game suspension imposed by the team kept him from participating in six games — and from in turn obtaining a year of credit toward free agency.

Per the sources, the grievance filed by Gordon challenging the suspension was eventually dropped, which means that 2016 will be his third accrued year for free agency purposes. His four-year contract will expire, but he won’t be eligible for unrestricted free agency."

Thus, his contract is still going to expire after 4 played seasons since he did actually play football in 2014. However, not having participated in (or being active for) enough games in 2014 is going to cost him UFA status. He will be a RFA instead.

The 2015 and 2016 seasons did not count toward the contract as he was suspended for the entire year. As a result, if he was to return for 2017, he would have one more year on his deal (as long as he was eligible/active for 1 or more games) and then he would be a RFA.

If you watched, yeah, you did see him drop several balls, quit on routes, not know plays, & generally be an asshole.

He wasn't THE reason, but he was bad & helped extinguish team chemistry the whole season outside his first game back.
