OF-2022

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm giving stats to support that.. and tbh, I don't think it would be a terrible idea. At least even for the rest of the season to see if it's a viable option going forward.

I also like always having Zimmer or Mercado on the bench at all times...

You guys make valid points and there isn't really an argument against any of them because we really just don't know if they intend to address the OF no matter how much I might want them to. If the rumors of talks with the Reds and Pirates are true then they at least considered it so maybe they will do so again.

I think it's quite obvious that not all of Zimmer, Mercado, HRam, Naylor, Johnson, and Jones can patrol a corner OF next season. It really is quite the quagmire.

Are you suggesting a platoon? lol
Harold vs. lefties: .289/.800. That's better than Oscar's .279/.765, but considering Oscar's much better defense he probably has the edge. I could see a Zimmer/Mercado platoon. It would also give us two guys capable of playing center if Straw needs a day off or goes down.

For me the wild card is Daniel Johnson. Huge power, great speed, but can this guy hit major league pitching? I have no idea, but he's been doing really well since his last call-up. As of Aug. 30 he has only 18 AB's this month. That's like five games. And that's with Harold Ramirez and Josh Naylor out. Why haven't they been playing him?

Straw has 4 hits in his last 27 at-bats. He needs a couple of days off. Johnson needs to play more, but now it looks like Harold is ready to return.

The gift of Hale that just keeps giving... :alc:

Herein lies the problem. Which marginal player do they replace with another marginal player? In a season where it's quite clear that they will not make the playoffs, why would you not give the player with the most upside the majority of the playing time?

Do we know Daniel Johnson is marginal?
Do we know that Oscar's 2019 was a mirage?
Do we know that Zimmer isn't finally realizing his immense talent?

I have no issues with playing any of these guys a ton in order to answer the questions. Because we have decisions to make about retaining them. I do, at this point, not want to see Harold Ramirez again in the OF. We know what he can do, and we need to see if we have better.

Quagmire is a great word!

I think its obvious that not all of them can be on the 40 man in November.

And just as obvious that the expected addition of a vet outfielder means that two of them will not be on the 40 man in February.

But DFAing one does not guarantee that he won't still remain in the org. Any team that acquired him would have to add him to its 40 man, unless we released him, instead of optioning him.

Great point about possible DFA's. On the flip side, who's to say they won't snatch an OF they value more from another team. I think it's going to be a weird, exciting offseason with the likes of no other.

if we put Naylor, Johnson, Ramirez and jones all in left field at the same time, there would still be balls dropping

Think of all the dangerous collisions that would occur.

You're probably right.......unfortunately. Although I do have faith in Johnson's defensive abilities and Bimbo says Jones is more than capable defensively. I'm inclined to believe him. I have little use for Naylor or HRam at this point, but that's just my opinion which is worth absolutely nothing.

Naylor is only 24 so you would expect he's still improving but comparing this season to 2019 I'm not seeng any progress.

2019 253 AB's. .249/.315/.403/.719 0.1 WAR
2021 233 AB's. .253/.301/.399/.700 0.2 WAR

Identical for all intents and purposes. Maybe he would have come on strong in the second half when the balls started carrying, but he's a line drive and ground ball hitter with 16 HR's in 583 AB's so I doubt it. To me Naylor looks like a left-handed Harold Ramirez; tremendous strength but hits everything on the ground or on a line, rarely elevates, and is below average defensively. Doesn't hit for power or average and rarely walks.

Amed Rosario is from the same school of hitting but his average is 20-30 points higher because he uses the opposite field and he plays a critical defensive position.

Naylor has the advantage of being able to double as the backup first baseman so we don't need to keep Yu Chang or Owen Miller on the 25 just in case something happens to Bradley. So we could carry five outfielders and platoon at both corner positions. You could have a Zimmer/Harold Ramirez platoon in right and a Naylor/Mercado platoon in left.

That is what the new uniforms are for...
