OSU Recruiting Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Always skeptical, but definitely keep posting! Don't want to drive people away, by any means.

Go Bucks!

Will do and Go Bucks! I'm going to try to get to the bottom of Fickell to FAU. If Pat gives any good info I will post it here.

With rumors/linkings of Fickell to FAU and Schiano to Oregon... should we be concerned at all about any defensive recruits changing their commitments? I mean, Browning and Okudah seem to be in the fold even with the rumors, but just worried that will change if the defensive staff undergoes a potential massive turnover losing both Co-Defensive Coordinators.

Don't see any big time switches. It would be like Mike Weber with Drayton >>> Alford. They might think about it, but we will be getting the best of the best to replace them.

It is sort of interesting. Urban usually likes his coordinators to stay for 2 years, I wonder if Schiano would jump. Of-course Oregon would be a hard one to turn down. Still dont see the fit there though.

Also, Tim Beck is the primary recruiter in Texas, not Fickell or Schiano. Pretty sure he is the primary guy in on both Browning and Okudah.

As long as Urban is HC, I have 0 worries about losing guys over assistant changes.

There's supposedly some bad blood between he and Urban stemming from Strong trying to hire Herman away when Strong first signed on at Texas.

I'm sure they can get over/have gotten over it considering their previous relationship.

Urban is definitely the type of guy to hold a grudge, and from most accounts that bridge has burned to the ground.

Kevin Wilson, fired IU coach, would be a name certain to pop up offensively. Defensively I'm not sure, but I've got a pretty good feeling it wouldn't be Strong.

I'm actually shocked to hear that...thought they were really close at Florida. Must have been some ugly sales pitches to Herman.

And Wilson has a black mark on him right now if some of these stories are true about player abuse/poor player treatment.

Helfrich would be interesting though.

Helfrich would be very interesting. But with a 11.5 million buyout I can see him taking a year off. But sign me if he wants to coach.

Since there was some discussion regarding the offensive coordinator position in here, I'll list some names I'd be interested in if the position comes open (in no particular order):

Major Applewhite - OC/QB coach - Houston: He had an affair with a Texas student while he was a coach there, so people are speculating he may not follow/may not be allowed to follow Herman to UT this time around. Still a young guy with plentiful connections to the state of Texas.

Matt Canada - OC/QB coach - Pitt: Finalist for the Broyles Award (best assistant in the country); has Midwestern roots (Indiana native, coaching stops at Indiana, Northern Illinois, Wisconsin and now Pitt); has the ability to tailor to his personnel, but still tends to be more run oriented.

Kevin Wilson - former HC - Indiana: Not much was said during IU's presser yesterday regarding his dismissal. If it is in fact for playing injured guys, then he immediately gets taken off the list. If his transgressions were more benign ("difference of philosophy"), then he'd be a top contender. Ran some great offenses at Oklahoma and did a nice job making over a fledgling program at IU.

Brian Brohm - co-OC/QB coach - Western Kentucky: Brother of WKU head coach Jeff Brohm, so he may stick with him no matter where Jeff ends up, but Brian was a great player at Louisville and has been part of a WKU staff that has presided over some incredibly prolific offenses.

Sonny Cumbie - co-OC/QB coach - TCU: Down year for TCU, but they too have been explosive in the last few years since Gary Patterson brought on Cumbie and co-OC Doug Meacham. Cumbie is similar to Applewhite in that he's a young guy with Texas roots who played the QB position in college.

Mike Sanford, Jr. - OC/QB coach - Notre Dame: Urban tried to land him two years ago after Herman's departure, but he decided on ND after being given the reigns as a playcaller. His dad was Urban's OC at Utah, so there's some familiarity there. Strong recruiting prowess, as he was the recruiting coordinator at Stanford under David Shaw. Could be willing to leave ND with the uncertainty regarding Brian Kelly's future. He's also a young guy and former college QB at Boise St.

Sterlin Gilbert - former OC/QB coach - Texas: He's obviously on the market after Charlie Strong's departure, but I think he did a decent job in his first year at UT, and the defense was the main culprit of their demise this season. Comes from the Baylor tree, but coordinated an offense that produced a 2,000 yard rusher in D'Onta Foreman. Also had coaching stops, albeit brief, with Dino Babers at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green, so there's a small tie to the Midwest.

ETA: Couple more names I forgot:

Brian Johnson - QB coach - Mississippi State: Recruited by Urban and played for him in one season at Utah; has served as an OC in the past at Utah; coaching under Urban disciple Dan Mullen; turns 30 in February, so very young; position coach for one of the hottest QB names in the NFL right now for two seasons (Dak Prescott in '14 and '15)

Drew Mehringer - OC/QB coach - Rutgers: Served as a GA under Urban and Tom Herman at Ohio State for two seasons ('12 & '13), so he knows the style of offense very well; only 28 years old; served as Houston's recruiting coordinator for the 2015 season; Texas native.

Ultimately, I doubt Warinner and Beck are gone unless the offense is a complete disaster in the playoff game or Warinner gets a head coaching gig and takes Beck along to be his OC.

Major Applewhite would be an awesome hire.

Would also love Wilson or Helfrich.
