Per Windy tweet: Chance Cavs will make roster move this week

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
By small trade I'm thinking Brian means smaller then whats being mentioned here. The players mentioned here are deadline day type players.

Small trades for players like Fabricio Oberto would be more like it. A contract that expires and a player who cut his teeth on a team whose philosophy is the same as the Cavs so the learning curve would be minimal.

Why would the cavs want to help out NO? surely keeping them in financial difficulty until the trade deadline would increas the availability of west.

I think if the cavs can secure either a solid veteran who can fill a role, or a young player who they think might fit their philosophy (i'm thinking mainly defensively) then they are in a no lose situation.

God bless gilberts fat pockets.

I know its only an example, but imagine if its for a servicable big, further cloging our big man rotation when powe gets back. :chuckles:

I bet there is someone out there making 3 million or so who we havent thought of capable of being a good defender at the wing postion. Maybe a devon george from washington? Eh...who knows.

or its a season ending expiring thats saves a team cashed strapped real money over the season and gives us another trade deadline deal chip.

Not really... you just waive the incoming players. That is why the Cavs contracts are looking good right now. You can waive the players without paying them.

I don't think that can happen. For them to be waived, they first have to be on that team's roster. You can't just trade for them and not take them. That's skipping a step. I'm not positive, but that's at least how I interpreted Larry Coon's FAQ.

Do you have any proof that what you said is true? A link to it actually happening or an answer in the Larry Coon webpage?

Edit: I didn't mean "don't think that can happen" in regards to waiving without paying- I meant it in regards to going over the roster limit.

prob a veteran of some sort.. a big man who could fill in a little or provide a safety option... u know like when z is dealt for 30 days....

I don't really know what his value is around the league, but I saw an article that said the Hornets are looking to move Hilton Armstrong. I remember him having a pretty good jumper in college. He is 25, makes 2.8 mil and expires at the end of the season.

Backup center Hilton Armstrong also has lost his spot in Bower's rotation because of inconsistent play. With his inability to fill expectations, Armstrong could be another player the Hornets could be looking to trade before next month's deadline to clear salary off their cap.

With how our roster stands at this point, I say it's more like 1%. I firmly believe this trade is going to set up bigger things down the road....most likely for another trade at the deadline, or at the very least a younger player (I say a center is a good bet) we may utilize heavier in the next few seasons.

The problem with setting things up down the road this year at the deadline is that you can't package a newly acquired player with other players for 60 days, and 60 days from now is after the deadline.

So, either a young player like you said, OR..

like Ben said, a guy like Fabricio Oberto(just a name, not him specifically) with his contract situation, except, Ferry will probably also demand, AND land, either a late first or early second round pick as a future asset for saving a team a few million dollars, which I would love. Especially since we don't have a second rounder this summer, it would be a nice chance to add a small asset.

Or maybe even a stashed Europlayer that we like.

Or maybe even using a trade as a favor for a future deal(Jamison, West, something like that).

I wish I could be a fly on the wall in whatever room Ferry is in discussing deals from now until the deadline...so many possibilities(except his bedroom )

A team cannot acquire players when they do not have room on their 15-man roster, even if they intend to waive an incoming player immediately. You are correct on the roster spots having to be open.

Any chance its just for an expiring contract that we then can just let go?

The Luxury Tax is at $69.92M for this season.

Per HH, these teams are right on the line:

Chicago - $69.96
Houston - $73.5
Miami - $74.45
NO - $74.54
PHX - $74.8
DEN - $74.86
Utah - $77.29

Of those teams, here are guys we could get for our platter of CC/JW/DJ (I'm assuming Green isn't going to be traded - minimum contract and 09 draft pick)

Chicago - $69.96 - Pargo
NO - $74.54 - Hilton Armstrong
Utah - $77.29 - Koufos

Also, don't overlook the opportunity for us to pick up a 1st round pick for taking on a guy. If we do that and save some team, essentially a ton of money (up to $3M in salary cap, same in luxury tax, and, if it gets them below the tax, also a payout from the league).

I wouldn't be shocked to see us take a guy like Hilton Armstrong (which we could use as our 4th center and some insurance in case either Shaq or Z had to miss time (AV is our only other 'center' on the 15 man), pick up NO's 1st round pick (or a future 1st) for our troubles. The deal could end up saving NO somewhere upwards of $10M.

What would be the point of that?

If that was the deal, we'd just waive whoever we didn't want to keep.

Well, the team that got our non-guaranteed players could then just waive them and save money instantly, rather than holding onto their expiring that they're just going to let expire anyway.

I know that

I thought Andrew was insinuating that we would get an expiring contract who we would then just get rid of, which would be pointless.
