Sure, now we're getting somewhere. I don't think it's fair to say that the factors discouraging black people from pursuing jobs in these fields are purely products of "black" culture, but it's important to realize that the decisions we make as kids affect the trajectory of our lives, and kids are very easily influenced by the culture they grow up in. It's not just a problem in black communities either...circling back to my earlier point, I'd say there's a similar culture of anti-intellectualism that prevents most talented rural white kids from pursuing elite colleges and white-collar careers.

At the end of the day, these are problems that hurt America as a whole because we're not fully utilizing our talent pool.
So you think the black community is holding th black community back?

How do you define anti intellectualism?

There are a lot of communities in our country where, at a basic level, it's just not considered "cool" to try really hard in school. I saw this play out in my high school first hand...it takes major guts for a black kid or a redneck to sign up for a tough AP class with a bunch of kids they don't know rather than simply take all the same classes with their friends. It's not that their friends are explicitly demanding that they not take AP classes...it's just hard not to simply "go with the flow."

Oh I completely agree with you. I got myself pulled out of honors and accelerated programs because I thought that made you a nerd and uncool. Sure was a waste of a lot of time and money.

But I went to a top high school and my parents were hard workers. I'm not sure how you solve that problem other than instill responsibility on an individual level which is not what's typically suggested as a resolution here.

And just giving people who were dumb in hs like me jobs, or white people jobs because I'm fucking up the ratio for my ethnicity, doesn't seem good or fair

Since there are more differences within groups rather than between them, how is this not racist again? Getting back to the main point

I don't think anyone (well that's not true, there are a lot of idiots in this world :chuckle:) wants to force-feed tech jobs to minorities who aren't qualified for them. The goal is to change perceptions of those careers among young people (middle schoolers and high schoolers) so that they see those careers as real options, even if they ultimately decide to go another route.

Yes, because all white people act the same around black people....

I'd call not seeing some parallels with how some white people interact with people of color pretty damn ignorant.

How do some white people act around people of color?
Fetishize.

My mom is a litle irritating with this. It comes from a good place, but..

Also obviously making race a thing and appealing to stereotypes to build commonality rather than treating it as another human being in a room with you

So I see this is back to being the Pet Racial Theories 101 Thread?

Who is doing either of these things?

Dumb people aren't getting (or keeping) tech jobs... :chuckle: WTF? And AA is not a racial quota system. Diversity outreach does not entail hiring someone who isn't qualified.

Since there are more differences within groups rather than between them,

Would depend on the boundary condition.. "Group" doesn't mean much.

how is this not racist again? Getting back to the main point

How is what not racist?
