Game Change- 8.5

This is the movie about when Sarah Palin was added to John McCain's ticket. Really great acting performances all around.

Sarah Palin was given a lot of depth. Rather than being painted as the complete idiot a lot of us know her as, you see that she was also woefully unprepared and constantly on the edge of a mental breakdown. Forced into the situation based on a google search for an attractive woman with views that fit what the female base would be looking for, she was poorly vetted. What you see of her suggests she's probably a good mom and wife and far better suited for state politics...shame that she insists on forcing her name back into the headlines.

Ed Harris, Woody Harrelson and Sarah Paulsen were all excellent and believable as always.

She wasn't a terrible Governor of Alaska. I predicted she'd get the nod back in March 2008 because of some of the reasons you cited, not least of which was her crusade against corruption in Juneau. She defeated an incumbent GOP Governor, and long time Senator (who really doomed himself when he appointed his own daughter to fill his seat upon his election as Governor), who out-spent her 5-1 in the primary, precisely because she vowed to clean things up. And she largely did. At the the time she seemed a logical pick. It was the type of bold move McCain needed to defeat W.'s poisonous legacy.

But, like you said, she was over her head and then things really went to her head. Plus that campaign team really mismanaged her. They botched the narrative after the home-run she hit at the GOP Convention.

You betcha.

And that Couric interview. They didn't even show the whole thing.

Hacksaw Ridge was top three war movies of all time with behind enemy lines and saving private ryan. The first battle scene was fucking awesome.

Better than The English Patient?

Better than The English Patient?

Probably the best battle scene I've ever seen. There was a few spots where I totally jumped, a few spots my heart was beating out of my chest, some spots where I wanted to barf, and others that were just super funny.

Easily The only role I've ever liked Vince Vaughn in other than wedding chrashers.

Just finished Moon.

Strong low budget ($5m) independent movie. 8.5. I liked it up until the final scene which I found confusing and not very final. Otherwise, it was excellent.

Sam Rockwell turned in what I thought was a borderline Academy award quality performance. And Kevin Spacey plays this movie's version of HAL-3000/TARS. His voice is almost hilariously perfect for it.

Really great sci-fi movie. Wildly under-rated.

Sam Rockwell has always been good

It was right behind the Ewoks taking out the legion of stormtroopers in Return of the Jedi, which should be No. 1 on anyone's list of battle scenes.

Couple of horror/thriller reviews:

The Invitation (9/10)

Really enjoyed this. The vast majority of the movie takes place at a dinner party. A guy (Will) and his girl go to this party hosted by his ex-wife and her new man. The invite comes out of the blue and it appears that it's the first time Will, his ex, and all of their mutual friends have hung out in a couple of years.

There are a couple of lingering issues that are addressed, and it comes down to Will being paranoid about the vibe of the party... locked doors, late guests, etc... Is Will overthinking it, or is there more going on that no one is catching on to? More to it than that, but I don't want to spoil any plot points.

Starry Eyes (5/10)

A movie that is kind of like Neon Demon in that it tries to illustrate the ugliness of Hollywood through the vessel of a young girl trying to leave her terrible job and make it big. There is stress, hair pulling, inappropriate favors, indie-film roommates, and demonic imagery/death to drive the point home. Sometimes feels like it's trying to be a bootleg Mulholland Drive, but at other points kicks into tried and true teen horror tropes. Worth a watch if you're into that type of stuff, but nothing I would go out of my way to recommend.

Both on Netflix.

Say Dr Strange for the 2nd time (had to take my daughter who couldn't go when I went the first time). It's my favorite movie of the year so far. I'm hoping that changes Thursday.
