Ray Allen to the Heat

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
What in the fuck was his old ass gonna do with more touches? That's right, shoot more jumpshots. Let's be honest here. He was already jealous of Garnett and pierce for pretty much taking all the shine. Then rondo comes along and steals the show. So we have a butt hurt 45 year old sg.

Europeans sports leagues manage without a salary cap or a draft. Things would shake out, and middle tier players would get paid by middle tier clubs.

But I like the NBA system just fine, the incentives for a player to stay might just need some further tweaking.

Without a salary cap most NBA teams would go completely bust. Top soccer teams have gone into administration due to insane salary conditions way above their income or due to being relegated and losing all their TV money. Without the draft you would just have all high level rookies sign with miami LA and NY. Its not like there is an academy programme to grow your own talent (only to lose it when it reach 18 to one of the big clubs)

Most European basketball teams lose money and are heavily sponsored by parent corporations.

I really hope that, in some point in the future, the NBA gets rid of the max salary cap. It would go a long way in evening things out if a player could make more than just 30% of the salary cap.

Interesting. I really hope they put a hard cap in with franchise tags. I'm tired of the large markets getting whoever they want, and the players having ring able to leave.

This isn't the NFL where a franchise tag can actually work. One player in the NFL out of 20+ starters isn't going to be able to completely change the tides of the franchise. For example you take prime Farve, and put him on a team where the second best player is current TO and you'll be lucky to win 2 games that season. However if you take LeBron James and put him on a team where the second best player is Delonte West then your team is likely in the playoffs (especially in the East).

One player can't do it alone in the NFL there are far too many variables, but in the NBA one player can do it alone because there is significantly less variables. A QB can be the best player ever, but if the recievers can't catch then your team is going to suck, and if your line can't block then you're never getting the ball out of your hands. If the defense can't stop the offense then the other team is going to run up the score, etc. In the NBA a great player can control the game at a level that great NFLers just can't.

Besides why even have free agency if there is a franchise tag. Why not just every team draft their players, and then play with who they draft until they retire.

Not really. It would just mean that players like Carmelo, Amare, Bosh, etc get paid more money for being a teams best player, rather than because they actually deserve to be paid more like LeBron, Durant, Dwight, etc.

Or in other words, the free market at work.

For a long time, sports owners didn't give a crap about profits because they were growing their business and their teams kept increasing in value every year. A free market forces them to put a value on that.

btw, this doesn't sound much like the NBA owners recent whining over losing money:

The ECA Shareholders Meeting met in Barcelona on Thursday to approve the final results of a highly successful season that met all profit projections and to look forward to continued growth the next one, which starts with the 2012-13 Turkish Airlines Euroleague Draw on Friday.

I dont buy the different sport argument. A team that is willing to max player out should be able to retain him. In fact, you can make it even exceeed the standard max deal as they will be unable to reach FA.

The players hold entirely too much power and are holding franchises (the entities that make the league run and fund the players) hostage because they want to play with their buddies in a big market. The league and teams need to take back that abaility to restore competitive balance.

Otherwise my Cavaliers will be a AAA team for Miami, LA, NY, Boston and Chicago. I'm sorry OKC and the Spurs are exceptions, not the norm.

And people should be free to work where they want to work. I suppose for the right price, they'd give that up, though; but for the right price you wouldn't need an agreement either.

Would James had walked away if the Cavs were allowed to offer him as much as $50m/yr - and it only effected their cap space like a normal max deal?

Please don't compare the NBA players to people who go to work 9-5. It's unrealistic to compare the two.

They can come up with a compensation package to keep players if a team so chooses. It needs to happen for the league and for Cleveland.
