Would be a nice option at Center for the Cavs, reasonable contract, good defensive center.

he will have a high price tho.

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

Just wondering... I've heard different things about Asik's contract. Sayings its base 8 million for all years and the other being it'll spike to 15 million after next season. Which is it guys because that is not a nice contract if its the latter going into FA next season.

Asik has a cap hold of 8 million dollars each of the next two years. But, he has to be paid a salary of 5 million followed by a final season of 15 million.

This is a poison pill that only applies to the original team of an RFA. Had Chicago matched, his salary would have gone 5/5/15 over the 3 years, meaning a huge luxury tax bill for the 3rd season. He actually gets paid 5/5/15, but for anyone other than the Bulls, his cap number is 8.3 a year.

not sure what houston would be after, probably a PF that fits next to Howard. but i mentioned in another thread, they could just trade Asik for a 1st round pick to a team with cap space, and then use that space to sign someone like Milsap, who would seem to be a really good fit on that team.

Asik has a real nice contract IMO...if the Cavs are serious about getting a guy that can bang with the big C's and get you a double-double than Asik should be a guy they go after aggresively... maybe Hou takes 1 of the Heat 1st rd picks for him... he would probably be anywhwre from 2-7 million cheaper than Pekovic

Asik will basically have a cap hit of what Varejao would have next year and I think Varejao has a team option. I'd be willing to offer pretty good assets for Asik.

Since OP posted no source: http://www.cbssports.com/nba/blog/k...ent-rockets-make-asik-lin-available-in-trades

Emboldened by their pursuit of free agent Dwight Howard, the Rockets have called several teams and made Omer Asik and Jeremy Lin available in potential trades, league sources told CBSSports.com.

Houston has secured the first meeting with Howard shortly after the NBA's free-agent negotiating period begins at 12:01 a.m. ET Monday. A contingent led by GM Daryl Morey and former Rocket Hakeem Olajuwon is scheduled to meet with Howard in Los Angeles. The Mavericks, Hawks and Warriors also have meetings scheduled with Howard, and the Lakers will get to make the final pitch on Tuesday, sources said.

The Rockets are oozing with confidence that they will lure Howard from the Lakers, and are making contingency plans to construct the team around him.

"They already have him, if you talk to them," one league source said.

All in on Dwight
Rockets ship Robinson to Blazers in cap-clearing move

If the Rockets land Howard, Asik would become expendable. One potential destination that rival executives have identified is Philadelphia, where former Rockets executive Sam Hinkie is the Sixers' new general manager.

Hinkie was part of the Houston front office that scored both Asik and Lin with backloaded offer sheets as restricted free agents last summer
. If the Knicks (Lin) and Bulls (Asik) had chosen to match the respective offer sheets, they would've had to structure their deals with $15 million "balloon" payments in the third year. But the Rockets only needed to account for the average of the three-year, $25.1 million deals -- $8.375 million per year, a manageable number for a starting center and point guard, respectively.

Rival teams say the Rockets are making Lin available, as well, though they'd have to get a starting point guard in return. As part of their cap-clearing maneuvers to land Howard, Houston waived Aaron Brooks and Carlos Delfino on Sunday. The Rockets are off the hook for Delfino's $3 million salary, which was non-guaranteed.

Teams believe the Rockets will move both Asik and Lin if they close the deal with Howard this week. Lin, whose acquisition last summer was heralded as a coup, was not invited to Houston's pitch meeting with Howard, sources said.

The final order of business to clear cap room for Howard -- whose signing, if he agrees to go to Houston, wouldn't be official until July 10 -- was accomplished Sunday when the Rockets agreed to trade Thomas Robinson to Portland. Houston will get two future second-round picks and the rights to Kostas Papanikolaou and Marko Todorovic, league sources confirmed.

The deal, which sheds Robinson's $6.9 million guaranteed over the next two seasons, can't be made official until July 10, but it clears the final cap room needed to offer Howard a four-year max deal.

There are other teams that want Asik that would pay more than that.

We might have to bleed a little for this and i'm ok that. Add in a decent backup pg on top of this and I would be content with our offseason.

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

Asik needs to become high priority if they land Howard. He's literally the perfect fit for this team, as we finally will need some size come playoff time. I would give up future 1st + 2nd's for him, or any player they ask for outside of Kyrie/Dion/Bennett.

Be careful how many assets you want to give away. He only has 2 years left on his deal. After that, he could be gone. I am interested in him. But, I think a bunch of the posters here are completely ignoring that fact.

Only 2 years left, we should only trade for players with 5-8 years left on their contract for sure. Good call.

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

I think the question is first are the Cavs looking for a starting center, a backup center, or a young center to develop?

Or do the Cavs in other words view AV as their starter and Zeller as the backup and center they are developing?

Dude, the dripping sarcasm was unnecessary. I said I was interested in him. But, the way some people talk, they want to trade assets like you were getting him for a much longer period.
