Rockets shut down trade talks about Omer Asik

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

IF a trade for Asik can be worked out for the right price (a real unknown), then he would probably be the best choice among the realistic options. What separates Asik from Pek is that he's a better defensive player. Pek is better at O. Given the roster construction with Kryie, Dion, and now Karasev and AB, we don't necessary need even more offense, we need the best defender we can get. Among the options I see, that's Asik.

But as Scholar pointed out, we have to be careful since Asik only has two years left on his deal. That mean he expires right around the time we might finally be contending again.

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

People are going to be so disappointed when Bennett turns out to be Antawn Jamison.

Anyway, we have a stockpile of draft picks at our disposal. I would try to build a package around those for Asik, maybe throw in CJ Miles so they can have more shooters around Dwight.

They are? Jamison in his prime averaged over 20 ppg and 8 rpg.

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

We should be ecstatic about a young 'twan

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

Also worth noting that Jamison couldn't even shoot coming in to college. He didn't shoot threes his freshman year and he shot just over fifty percent from the free throw line. Given that Bennett is coming into the league with the range of a guard and the rebounding of a power forward, along with a much bigger body (insert fat joke here) and better athleticism, I really don't get the Jamison comparisons. Really, the only thing the two have in common is that they are both "stretch" fours. Bennett has a totally different build, legitimate handles, and seems to play a lot bigger than Jamison did.

Young 'twan wasn't what I had in mind. :chuckles: I wish I could be ecstatic for Bennett. I wish he was playing in the Summer League so I could see him play some more against better competition.

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

Agreed, its a shame neither of our top picks will be playing summer ball. Hopefully Felix and my boy KJones get some big PT

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

Asik seems like he would be a nice addition for a the 2 years left on his contract as long as the Cavs don't overpay with draft picks (Memphis and/or Sacramento protected 1st) + (Thompson or Zeller). I don't know how the negotiations will go, but I would be happier with trading picks instead of sending Thompson or Zeller since they are both on affordable rookie contracts.

Don't mean to threadjack this Asik thread but I will bring up a good fallback rim protecting center in Timofey Mozgov.

He is a RFA with Denver that didn't get much playing time and is at the end of his three year, $9.7 million dollar contract that he signed with the New York Knicks.

Conspiracy Theory Alert - The Cavs now have Igor Koskosov as to help with the offense. Potapenko is on board to help coach big men. Ilgauskas is an assistant to Grant. Mozgov is from St Petersburg and played on the 2012 Russia national team. Could be a good way to ease the transition of Karasev to the Cavs and the USA.

Caveats - I don't know much about his game other than what read from other posters and Wikipedia/ESPN stats. I have no idea if he would be a good influence or not.

What would it take to get him? As a SWAG (Statistical Wild Ass Guess) I would say 4-5 million per year for 3 years may scare off Denver from matching the offer.

How do I rationalize this offer? The Cavs are now off the hook for Speights' 4.5 player option. Mozgov could be a good replacement for his slot and would fit better as a defensive rim protector.

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

There's just something funny about calling Mozgov a rim protector when every clip of him that I've seen is him getting viciously dunked on... to the point where people now refer to getting posterized as getting Mozgoved. Regardless, I'm not giving that guy 5 million. Never impressed with his play.

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

The Rockets need to shed salary to add a Josh Smith or Pall Millsap, IN ADDITION to adding D12.

They wont be looking for money back, so we are in an ideal situation.

If we are willing to take on Lin, I'd guess we could get them for a future 1st, and maybe a couple 2nd rounders.

Taking on Lin though ends free agency in 2014 unless we can dump him elsewhere.

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

Man, this would be a coup if we could land someone like Asik for future assets.

As Erbium mentioned, I doubt Houston wants players in return, so Cleveland could absorb the contract and send back some of the asets we have collected.

A 26 year old center on a reasonable contract (even if it is just 2 years) is EXACTLY the type of move you make this season. Young enough to grow with the core and likely would resign at a pretty reasonable number as the new CBA takes hold.

I would be ecstatic if Cleveland could pull this off. He's the type of young asset you overpay for, as (if nothing else) he would be incredibly attractive in a larger trade down the road.

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

So do we know if we have contacted them or vice-versa?

I'm not sure how plugged in Jason McLaed is, but it seems to me that if Houston wants to add Smith in addition to Howard, then sending Asik to the Hawks makes a lot of sense.

Wow. Lin, Harden, Parsons, Smith, Howard. That's a legit team.
