Rockets shut down trade talks about Omer Asik

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

Moving Horford to PF would be dumb. He has absolutely no issue guarding centers, and he's a match up nightmare at that position offensively. You're not maximizing his ability at PF.

I don't completely agree. Horford is a more natural PF, and if I recall he has stated in the past that he prefers to play at PF. Look at what a true C sidekick did for Aldridge in Portland.

I'm not saying ATL should definitely make this trade (I'm saying Houston should), but it's up to ATL if they prefer more offense or defense next to Horford.

Houston has ended talks on an Omer Asik trade and plan to keep him for now, league source tells Yahoo Sports.

Really? After all that?

I'm sure Houston will find a deal somehow:

Re: Rockets approaching teams about Omer Asik

smart move.

as i said when talks of this deadline were first revealed, it's silly to back yourself into a corner by overvaluing flexibility. taking a suboptimal deal now just to preserve the ability to make a follow-up trade with the same player(s) is very risky. a home run > two singles. some of the rumored deals now were ok, but there's still 2 months til the deadline and a lot can come up in the meantime. plus, there's a decent chance at least a few of the deals available now are still available in february.

Dwight Howard must have been running these negotiations.

At some point, they're gonna have to cut bait and move him for "team building" purposes. Morey needs to realize that contract is an abomination that HE created. He's not gonna find a team to give him star value for a really good role player. He makes 15 million and his current contract can't be extended so he's guaranteed to be going to FA in two years.

I think it's something of a mistake for Houston not to move Asik today or tomorrow. Disgruntled and more or less out of the rotation is not going to help his trade value over the next few months.

Asik's trade value drops every day from here out.

I hope the Rockets get bounced in the first round. One, because Howard is a vaggoo and then because after making some brilliant moves the last two years they all of a sudden decide to get dumb and greedy.

Bad move by Houston if they plan on keeping him after all this, dude will be a cancer in the locker room. Why would he all of a sudden be "happy" with backing up Dwight? The only reason they aren't trading him is because they got no deals they liked, I'm assuming they had a ridiculous asking price. They lowered Asik's value when saying they were wanting to trade him by today.

I was in the boat of those people that wanted to see them trade Asik then watch Howard's back problems creep back up. I would have found that funny for some reason

This is a classic example of a FO over playing there hand. At the end of the day they signed him as a free agent, so any value they get is great. If you look at it from this prospective, the main goal should be improving the team not trying to win a deal. If they think the team is better with him on it then what they can get, then I agree with holding on to him. But if they did not pull the trigger because what they were getting back did not seem like enough even though it would have helped the team now, and in the future, (some form of draft pick) then they missed the boat. Come the deadline, only teams who are in the playoffs, or playoff contenders are going to want to grab him, as teams shooting for lottery gold, wont want to improve their team that late in the year. To me playoff teams are less likely to give up good parts now. You wonder though, what the market will look for Boston and now, they failed to get him, and have a team that is not bad enough to get a high lottery, do they give up on Asik and try to sell pieces for draft picks and young players now.

Does Bynum's demise open up discussions between Cleveland and Houston regarding Asik? We wouldn't need to worry about who starts at least and he would get plenty of minutes.

Asking price would probably still be too high, and our floor spacing would still suck.

No, I think you target him.

While his floor spacing ability isn't very good, he's a big body for picks, he's got great size for offensive rebounding, and he's an elite rim protector, something we severely lack.

How many centers even exist that are elite defenders and can stretch the floor? We're going to have to choose one or the other, realistically, and it makes more sense to solve the defense problem with a center and the floor spacing problem with a PF. If Harden can thrive with Asik on the floor there's no reason Kyrie can't do the same if you surround the two with shooters.
