Rodney Hood: Won't be missed

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
While it's true Utah defended very well last year, The Stifle Tower and Favors we're a big part of that scheme. Guards could funnel penetration to a pair of strong rim defenders. The Cavs defense will need to run a different scheme.

No way he won’t get that. He’s an RFA. Let him get an offer. There’s not a lot of money out there in the offseason and I doubt the ones who do have money will spend it on someone who is injury prone. I’d say 4 years 45M at most. But I could see him taking the QO.
Wait till Rich Paul becomes his agent.

I hear you, bro... but think about this: Hood and Hill already have good chemistry together as a backcourt. So .. I'm not sure why we wouldn't want to exploit that.
Hill and Hood were a net +8 all season and postseason last year when playing together. And if you look at the various lineups, this trend stood across pretty much all other player combinations.

For example:

General net rating while playing together:
Jazz Points Per Possession (PPP) = 1.14
Jazz Opponents' PPP = 1.05
Jazz Net Rating = +9 points per 100 possessions

While playing with Hayward and Gobert:
Jazz Points Per Possession (PPP) = 1.15
Jazz Opponents' PPP = 1.02
Jazz Net Rating = +13 points per 100 possessions

While playing without Hayward and Gobert:
Jazz Points Per Possession (PPP) = 1.14
Jazz Opponents' PPP = 1.03
Jazz Net Rating = +11 points per 100 possessions

With Gobert, no Hayward:
Jazz Points Per Possession (PPP) = 1.08
Jazz Opponents' PPP = 1.05
Jazz Net Rating = +3 points per 100 possessions

With Hayward, no Gobert:
Jazz Points Per Possession (PPP) = 1.205
Jazz Opponents' PPP = 1.213
Jazz Net Rating = -8 points per 100 possessions

So the only combinations that were negative was when Hood and Hill were partnered with Hayward but no Gobert. Interestingly, though, when Hayward is not required to play, Hill and Hood are positive again.

Jazz Points Per Possession (PPP) = 1.16
Jazz Opponents' PPP = 1.13
Jazz Net Rating = +3 points per 100 possessions

Overall, Hill and Hood are really good when they are playing together. The Cavs should use them together during most of their respective minutes. I am good giving JR time while Love is hurt, but if he does not sustain the level of play from the last ~7 games, you have to bench him and stick with Hood.

Awesome work, jking. This is well done and completely true. You already have a guard pairing battle-tested and ready to roll together. Now, to get Ty Lue to recognize it when Love comes back.

I have my doubts.

I think most of hoods issues come from anxiety due to Donovan Mitchell. If he can fit in here and get paid. It will be great

Good stuff, I'd be interested in how they play with neither Gobert or Favors on the floor.

So they only played 55 minutes without either of Gobert and Favors. They scored 1.09 points per possession, and gave up 1.17 points per possession.

In those scenarios, though, the two bigs were exclusively Boris Diaw and Jeff Withey. Whatever people's thoughts on TT and Larry Nance Jr., I think our bigs are better defensively than Diaw and Withey. Plus, offense with LeBron should be better too.

Oh I agree and and I could definitely see those guys finishing games together. I just feel like for comfort they will keep Jr with LeBron as much as possible early on

I don't get the skepticism about Hood's Defense. The Jazz spotted the third best Defense in the league last Season and he was starting for them. Next to defensive juggernauts like Joe Ingles. I mean, sure, they got Rudy Gobert, but he missed quite a few games this season and they still rank as a Top 5 Defense.

The starting Backcourt of a Top 3 Defense last year ( Hill-Hood) is now the starting backcourt of this team. That's not too shabby. Even if we don't have a rim protecting presence like Gobert. A rim protector doesn't cure all problems, guys on the perimeter have to be disciplined as well.
You weren't paying attention to the Jazz games nor have you watched them play (even in the playoffs) if you're derisively mocking Jingles' defensive acumen. He's a big reason why they've been so good at defense. Shane Battier-esque. Or maybe Kevin McHale on perimeter defense might be a better comparison

Salary Cap Question for People:

What is Rodney Hood's cap hold at the end of the season?

The $2M salary suggests it will be small, much less than the $12-15M/year he might eventually get.

OTOH, he is restricted, so if he signs an offer sheet with another team, does his cap hold for the Cavs immediately go up to that value?

I guess that if the Cavs want to play cap gymnastics, for instance by receiving a player in a S&T, then they need to agree in principle to a deal with Hood, encourage him not to sign an offer sheet, finish that deal, and then sign Hood.

Is that correct?

Love Jingles.

More than Favours or Hood, he was the player I wanted the most from Jazz after Gobert.

Jingles is like the perfect player to play alongside LeBron.

Same here my man. There's no way Jazz would've given him up though. Legitimate 3 and D guy that can guard 4 positions and make Brady basketball plays. LeBron would've loved him.

I think Hood getting reps guarding LeBron in practice will make him better defensively though.

we need him in the starting lineup to attack weak-ass stephanie curry in the finals

if JR keeps starting gsw will just hide stephanie on him (i don't think they'll let him defend george hill, we could attack him with hill - bron pnrs, they switch those pnrs and won't want to switch curry on lebron in those scenarios)

i think rodney hood is more than just a spot up shooter, he can handle the rock and should be able to light up curry
