Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Uuugh... please keep real life politics the hell out of this thread. I loved Rogue one, and I don't want to have to read that nonsense inundating this thread.
Meh, Watergate actually inspired Lucas to write it in the 1st place. Prequel character Nute Gunray was supposed to me a jab at Newt Gingrich and Ronald Reagan (Gunray = Reagan backwards). You even had some Trump supporters boycotting Rogue One for some reason. They will forever be intertwined.

Also, pretty sure Palpatine was part of the Alt-Right.

I meant the "there's more I could write part"

Oh that's entailed in the need to work... :chuckle:

Seriously though, I've beaten TFA to death numerous times, not much more needs to be said.

Are you at all excited for Ep 8 considering it's Rian Johnson?

Yep, very...

I expect a completely different movie than we got with Abrams... But, we'll see what Johnson can do with Star Wars..

I feel like people are remembering some of the prequels too fondly, if that's possible. You don't have to like TFA, but come on. Worse than Phantom Menace? Go watch the entire end sequence before Maul arrives. The battle between the whatevers and the droids is the worst big battle scene in movie history. Then you've got the fucking skirmish from hell inside the palace. Throw on top of that that this was prior to Natalie Portman being able to act, paired with the shittiest child actor of all time delivering the most canned lines of all time driving the fighter. Man oh man. What a last 15 minutes.

I'm as hardcore a Star Wars fan as it gets. Shit I've a member of the 501st Legion for 12 years.........
The prequels were horrible, hell Revenge of The Sith was the only one worth watching.

Agreed completely; these guys are garbage... I mean, I like the comedy in their videos, it's hilarious; but if you try to take their opinions seriously for even a moment, it's laughably incoherent and nonsensical. These guys made quite a name for themselves ripping the prequels a new one only to come back and love The Force Awakens (which is very strange) and then compound the oddity by then slamming Rogue One which will, almost assuredly, go down as the superior of the two films.

To me, their opinions are very suspect.

I wouldn't say they loved The Force Awakens. Plinkett's review at least seemed to agree with you on a lot of things. It was more positive than his prequel reviews, but that's understandable. I didn't watch the Half in the Bag for TFA though so I can't comment on that.

I personally thought the Darth Maul fight sucked too. Maul as a villain was awful. He had absolutely no character (in the movies...I don't give a flying fuck about how they expanded it in books or comics) and was just there to sell toys because he looked cool. And the fight was an overchoreographed mess.

Agree on everything else you typed.

Yea, and it's not because Revenge was "good." It wasn't. It was all over the place. Cheesy as ever. But it was imminently more watchable because it just had some really cool, fanboy shit.

Revenge was every bit as terrible as the other two films. The fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan is still one of the most offensively awful cinema fights I've ever seen. It's just such a visual mess and is just utterly lacking in any emotion because it's impossible to see Anakin as anything other than a whiny bitch. He's not a tragic figure in the prequels. He's just an asshole who decides to kill a bunch of kids on a whim and then more or less gets what he deserves.

Without Phantom Menace, we would never have this masterpiece:

Saw this on Tuesday but have been so busy with holidays and family that I haven't had time to read this thread... Anyways...

I absolutely loved it. My first Star Wars experience was seeing the original trilogy right before going to see TPM in theaters. So I consider the prequels - while overall not as good - part of the Star Wars trilogy. The big reason I was concerned about these "side-movies" was that they may not feel like Star Wars. Boy was I wrong. This felt so much like the original trilogy while providing a unique story. That was literally perfect.

In terms of cheesiness, I also thought this was much better than TFA and the prequels. These characters actually felt real. They were dealing with real problems. The dialogue wasn't forced, it felt perfectly natural. This was the biggest reason I disliked TFA. Not only was it not unique whatsoever, but moreover, it felt like a child's dialogue.

Finally - and I love lightsabers - this movie did not rely on plot devices like "the force" or "lightsabers" any more than absolutely necessary. My biggest issue with the prequel trilogy is how much action scenes moved along via the usage of lightsaber/force battles. One thing that makes the original trilogy so great is that, while these things are part of the battles, they are overall fairly minimal. Episode 2 has the whole "coliseum scene" that was: a) unnecessary; b) terribly written; and c) completely reliant on lightsabers and the force to move the story along. Rogue One had absolutely none of that terrible writing, and it was much appreciated.

The only criticism I would make is that some of the character development felt ineffective. Nonetheless, it was still better than TFA by a mile, and I did feel some attachment to the cause by the end of the film.

Overall I'd give it a "Star Wars Rating" of 9/10, but without that precondition, a 10/10. Here is my rankings (I still hate this idea. Frankly, I really do appreciate each movie for what it brings to the series, but it feels obligatory).

1) Empire Strikes Back
2) Return of the Jedi
3) Rogue 1
4) Revenge of the Sith
5) A New Hope
6) The Phantom Menace
7) Clone Wars
8) The Force Awakens

Agree with everything you've said here. RO had perhaps the most adult tone of the entire series, save perhaps ESB.

I'm old enough that I still think of/refer to the first movie as "Star Wars" - never "A New Hope". And for all its flaws in retrospect, i still rank it highly simply because of the new ground it broke. The impact for its time was simply stunning, and difficult to overstate.

The other point is that I judge the original trilogy as they actually appeared, first run, in the theater. So Han not only shot first, but ROTJ includes the unbearable full-blown Ewok party at the end. Saw it with some classmates while at the Academy, and by the end, we were embarassed to be in the audience. But obviously, the reaction to the Ewoks may be very dependent upon where you were in life the first time you saw the movie. That's probably true for the entire series, at least to some extent, so that's a pretty subjective element added to the ranking of the movies.
