Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Did you ever see the original theatrical version with the Ewoks dancing to that incredibly lame song at the end? John Williams should be ashamed of himself for that piece of shit. As I said before, I was literally embarrassed to be in the theater at that point:

I dunno man.. I liked Yub Nub as a kid.. thought it was awesome!! lol! I still remember the music to this day so.. it was pretty memorable.. lol!!

I just think maybe you were at just the wrong age for it.. If you were a little older or younger, it wouldn't have bothered you..

I originally liked Yub Nub better. Then I heard the celebration song in this video and I'm kinda torn. Both work for me.

I think I'd have had to be quite a bit younger -- I think most boys 15 and older would have found it kind of eye rolling.

Older...maybe. Kind of hard to say because our impressions were formed at the time we saw it, and we're stuck with them. But it probably also has something to do with me being a year or so from getting my commission.

Differences aside, I think we can all probably agree that this is truly the greatest Star Wars song/performance of all time:

“I want it to be a blast and to be funny and to be a ride the way The Force Awakens and the original Star Wars movies were,” Johnson told USA Today.

Welp... my expectations tanked... :chuckle:

I was very much expecting him to go the direction of Empire, but maybe he doesn't feel that's possible with how TFA turned out.

So, uh...

What's the next "independent" movie going to about? Because this one sounds like it will suck.

Really disappointing to hear that, actually. When you've got a trilogy, you want there to be some flow, and having the dark second movie can help that out. ESB was obviously brilliant, and I personally liked The Two Towers the most out of the LOTR movies.

TBF, he said it was like the original trilogy as well. It's possible he feels it's like the originals, but Disney marketing said, "Make sure you keep mentioning TFA because it made 2 billion dollars"

Seems like a mostly meaningless fluff comment, honestly. I wouldn't take much from a quote like that. And the problem with TFA wasn't the tone or comedy or look or anything like that...it was that it just didn't really do anything new or different. All they really need for eight to be good is a more original script.

2) The Jabba Palace sequence is fucking sick. Luke's plot to save the day is awesome, the green lightsaber is badass, and the ORIGINAL version of the songs are great. The worst things about Return of the Jedi are the edits Lucas made years later. That Honeycomb monster scatting with the weird sexy versions of aliens is pure garbage.

Perhaps my favorite sequence throughout the whole trilogy. The Jabba Palace / Han rescue was like a mini movie in itself. Keeping my fingers crossed for a Jabba appearance in the Solo standalone.

A few rebuttals:

1) Even as an adult I still love the Ewoks. They were funny, light-hearted, and represented that the struggle drew in even those that seem primitive and remote to be a part of defeating the evil empire. I still get sad when that explosion kills an Ewok and his friend shakes him to no reply... It might have been better with Wookiees but it still wasn't bad IMO.

It's natural to extend feelings you have as a kid to seeing the same thing as an adult. My problem wasn't the Ewoks themselves -- you could have put them in a different movie and they'd have been find. My problem was that the Ewoks and ESB should not exist in the same franchise. It was a shifting/blending of tone that just didn't work for me. You have to suspend a certain degree of believability in SF, particularly in a space opera like Star Wars. But the story at least has to be internally consistent and true to itself, and the Ewoks handing the storm trooper their asses by throwing rocks and sticks at them tossed that right out the window.

3) Speaking of original songs, I LOVE YUB NUB. The new ending song is also good because John Williams is great, but it just feels off because it doesn't match what's happening on screen (like the spot when they clang on helmets matching percussion in the original). Don't understand the embarrassment people apparently felt watching it. It's a happy moment of celebration, they took care of the darkness on the Death Star.

Again, the point is how it fits into the seriousness of what is happening on the new Death Star. We're supposed to believe that Stormtroopers that dominated a galaxy couldn't handle a bunch of teddy bears??

I don't know man, if Luke actually has a plan to save Han, it doesn't make much sense. At one point he uses the force to grab someone gun and intends to cap him in the face. Why the fuck wouldn't he just have his saber on him? Now don't get me wrong I do like that part of the film. Except for when they kill Boba Fett off like a chump. I still stick with him blasting his way out of the Sarlacc

Have to completely disagree- this was probably my favorite part of the movie. Absolutely loved it, and the song stayed stuck in my head for months. I even had a dance for it. I was also 3. So as gour pointed out, age when we saw it colors our views :chuckle: I'm still nostalgic for the less-violent alien koala bears, terrible fighting techniques and all.
