Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Vader just murdering everything was fucking awesome. The first part of the movie was all over the place though.

Yea, they tried to do some character development in a very short time, at least for Jyn.

Really could have used an opening crawl. In fact, save TFA and maybe Phantom Menace, this movie needed a crawl for exposition more than any other SW movie.

I am glad I read Catalyst. Not that I think it was necessary, but definitely helpful.

10/10

Probably a top 2 or 3 Star Wars movie for me. Its always hard to position them in order because of my childhood nostalgia tied to the original trilogy.

To start, I could have used the opening crawl, I agree it could have answered a few questions people had about an all new cast, but at the same time Im glad they didn't do one because this story has nothing to do with the Jedi order or the Skywalker blood line.

Easter eggs were great: Cantina criminals, Jaba's dancer, C3PO & R2, Red 5...the list goes on and on.

I saw many complaints about character depth, but I honestly feel like this is trying to nit pick. I don't feel the rest needed support. The movie is a one man show and is about a pack of faceless rebels. To me it emphasized that every single person, no matter how "powerful" they were could make a difference.

Between the relationship with her father, the evolving dynamic with Cassisus, her motivation to create hope, the relationship with Saw, and her inevitable finish....was all well pieced together. Not much more you could ask for. The whole storyline about Galen knowing that he would need to work for the empire in order to ensure a weakness was created was also a great position for the story. It always bugged me that the deathstar had its flaws. Now knowing that Galen created those holes to give the rebels a chance was written in masterfully.

I enjoyed the touch on the force, without being to overpowering. Bringing in the kyber crystals and Jedah being mined was a great touch to the story. Multiple references to the force, without being force sensitive was a nice change of pace. I wonder if this will tie back into Ep 8 or 9 somehow. I can't help but feel like Luke makes his way to Jedah.

The final battle scene was perfect. You had the rogue rebels sneaking behind enemy lines, to their inevitable death. With the way they infiltrated Scarif, and just the battle that took place on land and air was beautiful. It truly felt like guerrilla warfare....just like a rebellion should. Using the Imperial Cruiser on the shield...bravo for that one. Very well thought out. It wasn't just some blast that opened the flood gates.

The Vader scenes were all epic. I felt that he had too many lines in his scene with Krennic, but the whole intro to Vader....his bath time (lol), and his fucking castle/house/Vader Dome....was epic as hell. His final scene where he just slaughtered rebel after rebel was masterful. He was in closed quarters, fired at multiple times, and lived through it all to hunt down those blueprints. Its almost like they wanted to re-establish Vader's dominance.

The ending, and how it ran right into the beginning of 4 was fantastic. I was partially hoping that the movie would end with Jyn being captured and sent to the penitentiary where Leia was, and that she could hear the their escape (not sure why), but I have zero complaints with how this ended.

Lastly, the way everyone went out was just great story telling. The pilot, the blind guy, his friend, K2 (who was hilarious), and eventually Cassius & Jyn was perfect. Each one made their contribution to this suicide mission and were major factor in saving the day. By them all dying, you truly felt like everyone died for a good cause and it showed how serious the rebellion was. It wasn't just the rebels winning battle after battle, but it was key people who made the ultimate sacrifice all for hope.

Vader was badass at the end, but he had the worst line of the movie earlier. His, "Don't choke on your aspirations" was straight Arnold from Commando.

I thought the movie jumped around a lot at the very beginning and was a little hard to follow, but then it settled down as it played out. It took me a second to realize that the defecting pilot, Bodhi was the actor from "The Night of..."

The robot had some great lines.

I was amazed at how well they recreated characters from A New Hope. That was very well done.

Overall, I really liked it. I don't think that's as much recency bias as it was for The Force Awakens.
Bodhi looks like a skinny Roman Reigns

Oh and the way they tied in "hope" to this movie was great writing IMO. It really adds some power to Episode 4 being A New Hope.

I do have to say I found the CGI of Tarkin a bit too deep in the uncanny valley. After seeing what "The Jungle Book" was capable of, I think it could've been better.

It was a bit creepy

I need someone to explain to me the Forrest Whitaker character.

He is from the Clone Wars series. He was a badass leader of a resistance cell on his home planet and contributed to the defeat of the CIS forces in that sector. He lost his sister in that fight and is no stranger to killing or sacrifice. By the time of this film he's been either fighting the CIS or the Empire for the better balance of 20+ years.

That he is in this film facing off against his old ally in a way is a pretty cool call back to the series and once again another mile marker of how far Anakin has fallen to the Dark Side.

I really think this movie could have used a crawl to set the scene. I was a bit confused with all of the jumping around at the beginning.

I noticed, well, right away without the typical Star Wars theme blaring away at the beginning who little music played in the movie. I guess I'm used to a powerful John Williams score to go along with the action.

The score was a letdown for sure. However, they changed to a new composer in September so I don't blame him.

Loved this movie. I'm not a Star Wars nostalgic so I'll say I liked it as much or more than any film that came before it. Mads Mikkelson was a damn boss.

Question for the experts... Hasn't it been a plot hole forever regarding the Death Star being way too easy to destroy in ANH? Was this plot point about Galen's plans always there, or was this really clever writing intended to negate it?
