The 2014 Cavs Off-Season Thread (not coaching-related)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Frye would be a solid fit. Griffin(knowledge of Suns philosophy) and Igor connection could probably make it happen.

As previously mentioned it would also take pressure off Bennett and give us another shooter.

Frye is also a good vet to have on the team which is badly needed.

Frye said assistant coach Igor Kokoskov had emphasized that he needs to do more of what he does best.
"Igor kind of challenged me and said, 'We pay you to make shots,' " Frye said. "I said, 'All right,' so I went out there and just shot."

Frye is a legit offensive threat who can go off for 20 any game, and at the PF spot provides a solid rim defending option. I'd like it.

In The Bullshit Whisperer's latest column:

5. Word is out that the Cavs are more than willing to sign two players to maximum contracts (along with Kyrie Irving) when free agency hits in July. The idea is to spend big for the right guys and win now.

6. Reports of a trade that would send Cavs guard Jarrett Jack to the Nets for guard Marcus Thornton are inaccurate, league sources said. But Jack has indeed come up in a discussion or two with other teams.

7. The Cavs are looking at a couple of potential major moves, and one source said to discount nothing, including the possibility of the No. 1 pick being involved. Details were not provided.

9. Interestingly, the Cavs also feel that the hiring of Blatt will increase interest among European players who can sign with NBA teams as free agents.

10. The Cavs most certainly are monitoring the Carmelo Anthony situation with the Knicks. Anthony is opting out of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent, according to multiple reports. But with the Cavs' attention on the draft and other free agents, pursuing Anthony (in a sign-and-trade or otherwise) is not yet a priority.

somebody else has brought this up. i just don't see how this is possible unless we get rid of several contracts. we would have to package some of them (Jack, Andy...) with picks to convince teams with cap space to take them on and even then there's probably not enough room for 2 max. contracts

Right now, if I were a gambling man, I would say there is a less than 50% chance we make the first pick.

They can't do that. It's not mathamatically possible.

Max salary for 10+ year vets is 35% of cap. Max salary for 0-6 year vets is 25% of cap. Sign Bron, Melo and Kyrie and that's 95% of the cap. But wait! Max salary is also 105% of previous salary - and Mr. Anthony made 22M last year, so his is more like 36.5%.

So, sure, you can sign those three, but you'd have $3.2M left under the cap and $16.77M to stay under the tax. Good thing you only have to sign 12 players.

You sign three max guys and you're in repeater tax hell in 3 years.

I think the point could be that Dan Gilbert doesn't give a damn about his money if we could even get one championship in those 3 years. You have to think if we sign two max players this summer we are instantly contenders as one would likely be Lebron.

Its not so much about spending the money, it's about handcuffing yourself going forward. You've got a significant core of young talent other than Kyrie, all of whom will be looking for raises over that three year period. Do you let them walk and end up like Miami - trying to sign past their prime ring chasers? Can you deal the TT's, Waiters, Zellers, etc as they get near the end of their contracts for draft picks to be used on cheaper players?

I'm all for getting three studs, but there's gotta be an escape hatch or an exit strategy. Maybe there is, but I'm not seeing one yet.

Hopefully it's simply due diligence and nothing more. Cavs have had a hard enough time turning quarters into dollars, why they would turn their own dollar #1 overall into change is kinda confusing.

GOD I LOVE THIS!!! The draft is still 3 days away and the rumors are flying like crazy! Can't wait to see what is said in the next 2 hours, days and what happens in free agency with us. Nervous and exciting time to be a Cavs fan.
