The Future of Baseball in Cleveland

I wasn't a big fan of Guardians, or Spiders, but I prefer both to most of the other ideas floating around. IIRC though, the Spiders nickname was jokingly bestowed upon the team by opposing players due to how scrawny and weak the team looked. Not very intimidating!

Ultimately I hope we keep the red, white and blue colors. I think the Indians had the best team colors in town and I worry that a Guardians nickname could lead to boring gray primary uniforms.

11 of MLB teams have red, white, and blue variation of a color scheme, so it might be the best in town. I do like the other's because of the uniqueness of the Cavs and Browns.

As for Gray, they are literally the away jerseys already and our cap is a bland block C. Sometimes baseball is too traditional, especially compared to other Pro Sports Leagues.

If it has to be something Lake Erie related, how about Steelhead?

Not only is it a shoutout to the former industry of the city, but it is also the name of a noble and powerful fish that graces the rivers of NE Ohio every fall and winter.

Steelhead is a good name. Less goofy than Walleye. Probably the best, strong name for a fish there is.

Many good marketing opportunities. One can use nautical, fish or steel based imagery.

What's your color palette for the jerseys then? Gray and Black with accents of green and orange/pink?

The all gray uniforms are one of the away uniforms , but the blue alternates seem to be used more often. I'm not saying we need to keep the exact uniforms, or even the same block C logo, I personally just do not want a gray primary uniform. A Guardians name makes me think of the awful gray Cavs city edition unis from a few years ago.

I think we have a great color scheme that's unfortunately been underutilized with some boring design choices. Here's looking at you block letter blue road alternate, no piping on the jersey head ass.

Edit: and bring back the red sleeves and belts you cowards. The contrast was great.

From the PD:

That said, selling merchandise with Chief Wahoo and the Indians name can be troublesome. The club needs to sell a certain amount of Chief Wahoo-branded items in order to maintain its copyright claim. Otherwise the logo could fall into the hands of somebody who would use it in an inappropriate way, which completely defeats the purpose of changing the name in the first place.

Profits from those sales will go toward supporting causes in the Native American community, Dolan said. There will be cynicism, but the club appears willing to jump over all of the hurdles to handle things the right way.

And doing the right thing should be the only guiding principle here. Because once they start playing ball in the spring, it’s going to matter very little what name is emblazoned across the jerseys on their chests.

Here's a better idea. Switch the Columbus Clippers and the Cleveland Whatevers. Columbus is about an hour closer to those of us on the other side of the state and there's nothing offensive about the Clippers that I can think of. Build a new stadium on the north side just off the 270 loop and every game will be sold out. Use Huntington Park for the Rubberducks which can be renamed to something/anything else but the f'n Rubberducks. Bam! Problem solved.

Have a feeling within the next 5-10 years tribe will be playing home games in both cities. Huntington Park is nice and can be expanded

Am I hearing the rumors correctly? Cleveland Citizens? If true, that's a dog shit name - worst in professional sports.

I was really holding out hope for the Cleveland Steamers (obviously OBJ would be down). Spiders or Guardians would've been fine too.

Citizens? What a terrible idea. Would we use a guillotine as the logo?

Where are you hearing this? There really hasn't been any substantial rumors that we've talked about in here.

At some point of the change process, the fans need to have a say (vote via newspaper or team website).
Maybe the 'vote' narrows the field from 12 to 5 names or selects the name from the final 5..

If the fan base gets shutout of the process, ownership groups (now & in the future) will get a nasty backlash..

The Reds can and would fight this, unfortunately. Would be a fantastic idea though, except no reason to rob Akron of the Ducks, they support them and their ownership runs a good org. I'll go to Ducks games before I go to LC.

Got a call from my Dad in CLE...he heard it on the radio there. Supposedly the team or MLB filed a trademark for "Cleveland Citizens".

This was all I found online:

This is a test and only a test.
