The mental health thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's probably one of the meds.

Do u think you can check your TSH, T3, T4, free t3?
Also testosterone, free testosterone, LH, FSH.
I asked my psychiatrist if I could get blood work done for my thyroid and they turned me down. I brought up going to an endocrinologist and they did not think it was necessary.

Will a lab check on those levels without an order from a doctor?

On a routine test? No.

You can do one privately I suppose. The fact that he doesn't approve you to meet with an endo is not cool. You need to try to push to see one or pay out of pocket. Whatever you think is right.

I do believe hormones and other issues with enzymatic activity / methylation is a big reason for mental issues. And with ur sudden change in metabolism I believe its wise to look into hormones.

I am transitioning to a new psychiatrist soon due to needing to move for my partner's work. It is still frustrating that my psychiatrist is not willing to write me a referral or order labs for my thyroid.

You can't do that through your family physician?

I eat 1000 calories or less and not lose weight. Is it a thyroid thing?

Could be.

I recall you posting somewhere that you're a big dude. Take it from someone (me) that has done one of these crash starvation diets in the past: do not starve yourself and your body in order for the number on the scale to go down. It isn't a sustainable lifestyle. You're going to hit your goal weight and then re-introduce foods that you've kept away from in order to lose weight. In the blink of an eye, you're going to put a ton of weight back on.

The best weight loss advice I can give is to avoid processed foods, go heavy on the protein, drink a lot of water, lift 3-4x a week (muscle will increase your resting metabolic rate), and mix in fun cardio 3-4x a week. It's a lifestyle change that makes your long term fitness sustainable.

I am going to have to switch physicians too due to the move. They deferred to my psychiatrist on addressing the weight gain.

Once I switch to a new physician, I will ask about getting thyroid panels and a referral to an endocrinologist. I am not sure why doctors make this more difficult than it needs to be.

My weakness along with having poor portion control.

PrivateMD or DiscountedLabs offer all kinds of panels you can get done at Quest or Labcorp.

I don't buy any processed foods when I shop anymore. It really helps to not have the food available when you walk into the kitchen or pantry.

Maybe try meal prepping and put the food into pre-portioned containers. That's how I'm able to measure and stick to a healthy food intake. After some time, your stomach will shrink and feel more sated with smaller portions.

Had a follow up appointment today, required every 6 months to continue my medication

Therapist asks why I stopped my therapy sessions. I told her because there were too severely disparate beliefs about core principles, she was sort of insulting and I didn't feel like I could continue an open vulnerable relationship with her.

She asks "do you mean with me or with someone before me?"

Oh fuck. I didn't recognize her. This was that therapist.

She called me immature for wanting to hookup with someone outside of a monogamous relationship and wanted me to break it off with my long time partner even though we are both happy
