The Military Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information

When faced with a chemical weapons attack on innocent people, make sure to first take a time out to blast the previous administration for their weakness towards a dictator you're currently supporting.

So, to you military experts... what are our best options for military actions in Syria? And, North Korea?

These seem to be the 2 most likely theaters of US military action other than what is already going on in Afghanistan and against ISIS.

To the average person it looks like the only options are really bad, and worse. But it looks very likely that something is going to happen in one or both of these hotspots in the foreseeable future.

If it becomes inevitable, what would it look like in either or both cases?

That depends on what our political goals are for the military action, and what price we are willing to pay. If you're talking about removing Assad, that ship essentially sailed in the last Administration. I think it's fair to say the involvement we did have likely made things worse by prolonging the struggle. At this point, unless we can cut a deal with the Russians -- which may actually be our best option -- there's not much we can do about Syria absent a full-on invasion. And that's not going to happen.

With North Korea, large-scale military options also are off the table because they have nukes. Even without them, they could likely kill huge numbers of ROK citizens. But I do think it is about time we upped the rhetoric and our military presence, because I don't think the NK military would go to full war without Chinese backing, and the Chinese wouldn't back that. Destabilizing the fat guy in Pynongyang is a good idea, so saber-rattling is smart.

Truth is there are no good, easy answers to either problem.

At least 60 tomahawk missiles launched at Syrian air base from USA Porter and USS Ross.

The target is believed to be the chemical weapons depot used in the recent civilian attack.

Let's hope they had time to make sure no Russians were in the area.

From what I've heard it was a very small an tactile attack targeting assets (runways, planes, weapons, etc) and not intended to inflict human casualties.

Whether there are any casualties and what nationality remains to be seen. Although Russia did release a statement before the US escalation stating that their support for Assad was not unconditional.

Russia only cares about their bases. Assad is probably incidental but I doubt they would ever let the Ba'athist regime fall.

It's being reported that the US warned Russia an hour prior to the attack on syrian military infrastructure to insure no Russian casualties.

McMasters being diligent.

Hopefully this is the end of it. Anything more could lead to mission-creep and furthering confusing things on the ground. The ROE for our guys must be a damn nightmare right now. A tank or a technical comes over the hill and one has no idea if you can shoot at it. Could be ISIS, could be Syrian Army, could be Russian, could be "Free" Syrian Army. Yeesh.

To which guys are you referring? We don't have significant ground forces in Syria -- maybe 60 or so -- and the guys there had to deal with the same issues already of identifying who was coming over the hill.

I like it. Lots of missiles, very fast with minimal consultation, targeted on the right place.
